PM'S DILEMMA
by krishnamoorthy lakshminarayanan on Jun 24, 2008 02:08 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is not only the PM's integrity is at stake, but it is the nation's. Both China and Pakistan must feel happy to note the happenings in Indian on the nuclear deal. While Chinese interests are protected by Karat and Co. we do not know who protects those of Pakistan. May be the Congress and SP represent Pakistan.Look at the stand of UPA allies. They including Congress are interested only in their power and position and are not hesitant to sacrifice the national interests. Nuclear energy is must for India which is facing energy crisis with the increased oil prices and stagnanat production of oil in India.

PM should go ahead and ink the deal even if he has to stake his Govt .It is the best oppurtunity for us when our enemies are at our door step ..china ..pakistan..etc.Indian interts and the world interst can only be preseved when india ,USA and israel call the bluff of muslim nations.the price rise of crude oil is one such strategy by the muslim countries to create a situation where JIHAD can be launched against western nations.Look at history of the world ,muslim countries are known for waging war..but they dont realise time has changed....So Pm you should not think twice before you ink the deal.its in nations interst.

I wonder why the Congress is going bonkers about the deal
by Deepak Mohanty on Jun 24, 2008 02:03 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The deal is neither a win-win nor a lose-lose choice for India. For forty years or more India has been boxed into a corner for its belligerence against the nuclear-haves. Today when the reality of insufficient fuel resources, fossil or otherwise, has finally started taking a toll on the Indian economy, the nuclear haves finally sense victory. Victory in the form of complete control and eventual dismantling of the fledgling Indian nuclear arsenal.

A few months back Progress Energy of the US proposed to build two 2200 MW reactors in Florida costing up to 18 billion $. That comes to about 4 billion $/1000MW. Last year India faced power shortage to the tune of 70000 MW. If we were to take care of at least 25% of last year's deficit, companies and governments will have to spend 72 billion $s. Extrapolate the economy's growth and the concomitant growth in energy needs and power pilferage(32% currently), we are talking of hundreds of billions of dollars worth of investments in the nuclear sector spread over the next 10-15 years.

A government in an election year, who has squandered away close to one lakh crores in tax payers' money just to buy votes, doing all this for seer concern for the motherland! Nah, things certainly do not add up. If kickbacks of just a few percentages were to be accepted, the Congress coffers will be richer by 10s of billions of dollars. I think that is the driving force behind all this pro deal rhetoric by the Government.

nuke deal and mohana
by Umesh Sharma on Jun 24, 2008 02:02 PM  Permalink

the pm shud resign, if he feels that upa partners are not agreeing cause they donot want early elections when left with draws support to his govt.are we running a govt for the benefit of the citizens of the nation or for comfor of the upa allies? v r becoming the laughing stock of the world, we all know that the basic amenities to aam aadmi, but tell me when has this been not a issue in elections last 61 yrs, govt has failed, in all sectors. but here on the issue of nuke deal the upa shud hv thought abt it b4 going for negotiations, now after being finalised, the govt is hedging, this will affect all yr future international agreements. one has to remember that in todays world we are all interdependant. mohana shud tell his boss sonia that he will resign if this deal is not signed, lets see if commies hv the guts. anyways elections are due why not 6 months early heavens will not fall, expense to the exchequer is the same. mohana will hv prestige on his side instead of being termed as spineless speacialy when he belongs to the fighting race.

Nuke Deal
by Samir Moosa on Jun 24, 2008 02:02 PM  Permalink

This deal would have been fruitful to India, had it been signed a year back. Back then India was flying high and could have asserted some of its own terms and conditions. Currently it is blatantly clear that India is in turmoil and the US will use all tricks in the book to make the deal favourable for its cause. Though not signing the deal would still be the last thing on India's mind as flaring up America cannot be afforded by anyone. They hold the big stick and whether our national pride forbids us to bow down before them or anyone else, we still have to, because there is no other choice.

Shady PM / UPA
by Srinivas vishnu on Jun 24, 2008 01:57 PM  Permalink

It is surprise that the congress is banking more for the left party's support than on the people's verdit. That is why, it wanted to ink this shady deal before going to polls. Any other party who do not get support for genuine purpose would have choosen the way to face the people verdict on such a important national agenda.

Re - Nuke deal and the prime minister's dilemma
by ashok b on Jun 24, 2008 01:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

A major job requirement for any public leader is to generate ideas and convince of the same to all sections of the society. With all his academic qualifications and blemishless personal integrity, Dr. Manmohan Singh fails this test. The present immediate requirement is to tackle inflation, but we don't hear any action or plans from our economist PM. Its high time that he resigns his job and a better person occupies his place.

Dr.B.Ashok
