AN APPEAL FROM THE INDIAN NUCLEAR SCIENTISTS - I
by Gopinathan Nair on Jul 19, 2008 02:19 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

News from “The Hindu”
Three top scientists caution on deal
Sandeep Dikshit
NEW DELHI: Three of the country’s top nuclear scientists have said that once the nuclear deal is in place, India’s commercial nuclear interaction with other countries will be “firmly controlled” by Washington through the Hyde Act enforced through the U.S. “stranglehold” on the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
The scientists — P. K. Iyengar (former chairman, Atomic Energy Commission), A. Gopalakrishnan (former Atomic Energy Regulatory Board chief) and A.N. Prasad (former Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Director — have written a letter of appeal to Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear cooperation and pointed out several lacunae in the draft safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“We are strongly of the opinion that the government should not seek the IAEA Board’s approval for the current draft safeguards agreement until its implications are debated more fully within the country and with a group of experts who were not party to the IAEA negotiations,” they observed, adding that analysts had convincingly refuted the government’s main reason for pushing the deal — energy security to the country.
The deal will not be governed by the bilateral 123 Agreement because it is anchored in U.S. domestic laws, including the Hyde Act, which contains several stipulations “extraneous to

I am really grateful to UPA government particularlly Manmohan Singh who is going to sacrifice his government for the interest of our nation .He is the 2nd legendary boy after Gandhi in independence India who is dedicating every thing to our country.
Lets talk about nuclear deal, the persons who are criticising the deal are either a layman or are unaware about diplomacy. The deal is opening the window for India to trade nuclear fuel and dual use technology that India was aparthied till now not from 45 members NSG country but also from our allied partner. Thus after deal we may freely move to any country either for purchase or to sell our novel depleted U fuel reprocessing technology and Thorium based reactor unique to world that India has innovated. Of course ,waste fuel dumping is little problem because of reutilisation leaving little amount of residues irrespective of USA and others that are facing the problems .Without deal it is impossible to be recognized as a technologically powerful country and play a significant role in the world plateform as well fetch the benifit.Due to volatile prices of fossile fuel, energy crisis, dependent upon import and need for sustainable development it is the only viable 0 carbon energy option in near future. Our sovereignty is also intact either trade with Russia,France,USA or else.India and USA are complementary partner not junior. Our education, health,IT,BT,BOP,Space and several sectors would be energised symbiotically. It is historic opportunit

If China has done a decade ago then why not India. We have now matured nuclear weapon technology and we can test on computer so there is no need to explode like five veto country.Pakistan and china diplomacy will be weakened due to India- US mutualisation in understanding because, both are facing common problems. It is another feather of Indias success cap to become a powerhouse of the Asia.

Can you trust them?
by unni krishnan nair on Jul 19, 2008 02:18 PM  Permalink

Is it an acceptance on the part of the Government that everything is not alright with the proposed Nuclear deal?

If Govt. knew this all along why was it telling the country that we should go ahead with this deal in its present form?

The opposition has been telling this all along and the Govt. was telling that they are wrong.

How can we trust this Govt. when it changes its colours day in and day out for its survival?

They are dumbs! All they have done in their life is the netagiri and finding solutions for better ways of corruption! One MP in some state assemble who was in opposition and was supposed to make noise but didnot know anything about the agricultral irrigation system being discussed in the house. He rose from his seat and said..I oppose to this plan of making hydroelectricity because if you will take current out of the water..water will be left with nothing and how these waters can be used for irrigation!

Big No
there is nothing in 123 Deal which goes aginst the intrest of INDIA
Argument is about Hyde act, which is USA domestic law. How far that will be binding on USA government is the issue. In any bileteral agreement what is binding is the agreement between two parties not any domestic law of any of country.
If there is any such law which put any restriction and binding than it should be clearly stipulated in the biletral agreement otherwsie it will not effect the agreement

At last...Government stated thinking
by bency gopalakrishnan on Jul 19, 2008 02:12 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

At last government started thinking to counter 'Hyde Act'....

They know that it is hard to win trust vote.So new tactics to gain support from 'thinking' MPs..

But one thing remain unanswered...

Why government show such haste & secrecy to such a deal, without even making primary negotiations with other parties & Left parties who oppose the 'Hyde act"...

It is the duty of a democratic government to take steps to make sure everybody's fears about such a deal is clarified...
But unfortunately they only trust George Bush...

And now they are in hot pot...

well they might have tried for sure but seeing left attitude they want to oppose everything congress does it is not known to us how much they have shared.
from last 1 and half year they r trying to convince left and other parties but it is in useless and they know if bush goes time for new goverment to come in power and convince them would be diffcult as it happens here in india. it makes sense to approve it with this goverment before it get's too late.
if goverment acts fast we blame them y they r doing fast and if they take time we blame them they never act fast
we have to be serious in selecting minister and not just critise them

This is certainly a tactic to wean away some fence sitters to vote for the govt, in the trust vote. The question is why the UPA did not take steps to counter the Hyde Act for so long, and what caused the belated conciliatory statement? The manner of handling the process of the nuke deal by the govt in the last three years, has caused serious doubts in the minds of all right thinking people. This and the timing of the "thinking" about countering the Hyde Act,may actually prove to be counterproductive for the UPA in the run up to the trust vote. The die is cast, let us await the outcome. After winning the trust vote, let the govt come out with such measures to mollify
the critics of the nuke deal.

I think people should vote cleverly now. Just give your votes to either BJP or Congress no third parties. Let any one of them get compete Majority so Atleast we can have stable government.

I am neither a cogress lover nor a BJP lover. I recommend any one of them but with complete majority
