Votes & nukes
by Bodh Ramdeo on Jul 19, 2008 08:59 PM  Permalink

India has very little oil and gas, which is slated to run out in a couple decades anyways, and a significant amount of low-grade coal- that's it. All this talk of Solar, Wind and other environmental friendly energy is ways off and will not be able to produce the huge amounts of energy that will be required to feed the huge, expanding energy needs of this huge, growing nation.
Where is that stop-gap energy to come from? Yes, nuclear energy!

some questions aboubt the 123 agreement
by maruti t on Jul 18, 2008 04:19 PM  Permalink

Its verry difficult for any common man to talk on this agreement but some of the questions posed on one of the news papers to congress party
1)what will be the contribution of nuclear power to indias electricity share in percentage
and by what date/year.if every thing goes right
2)will it not make india more dependent on other foreign countries for uranium
3)why are we not using thorium why are we not developing the technology to use thorium
4)why is US so hell bent on pushing the treaty when it wants to reduce ther nuclear usage for power in its own country ,is it because it wants india to develop nuclear power so that there will be less demand for coal which it can use for power generation
5)even presidential candidiate obama is pressing on non nuclear power .why is it so?
6)when US technicians themselves feel that there is problem of nuclear radiations and technology they have is still not sufficiant to over come accidental hazards how will they transfer proper technology to india?

Confidence
by Sankha Ghosh on Jul 17, 2008 05:32 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think time has come for India (we Indians) to be realistic, humble and pragmatic and dream big. Almost 100% (even children in the pseudo communist families, they love to settle down in America, Mr. Bardhan's son is in University of Berkeley, California) of all Indian middle class love America and what America stand for - for Freedom & Individuality. We love to study in American Universities, love their films, love their enthusiasm and technology, love to work in America, but most importantly we love their courage and commitment for their beliefs. (we bow down to Afghanistani terrorists and hijackers, while they kill them all in retaliation)
It is not about whether Americans are some sort of holy cows, they have their own short comings (Vietnam, Iraq, Central America) like the communist also have, (Cambodia's Pol Pot killed 6 millions of their own in the name of revolution)
So the facts is, we have around 100 bombs to scare away our enemies (Pakistan, China) from attacking us, so it is now time for economic and social development only. The best way to achieve that is to realize where we stand today among all nations/civilizations, and where we have to go, from where we are going to learn and adapt. The leading nation of the world that stand for Freedom & Individuality is the natural choice and definitely that is never going to be a China. China and India may be both very ancient civilizations, but we are miles apart in our beliefs and ethos. These pseudo Indian communists

do not mix a nation's identity & policies with the way of living of its citizens, both are two different things.

DEAL RIGHT ?
by hanif mohammed on Jul 17, 2008 02:52 PM  Permalink

This 'deal' is for India and not for any political idealogy. The commies are anyway not part of India, and would like to see BJP to support the deal for the sake of our nation. If BJP really do this, they will earn the 'respect' of people sitting on the wall !! All responsible Indian Parliamentrians should vote for 'deal' - for the benefit of our future generation and advanced / developed INDIA !!

by nimit patel on Jul 17, 2008 10:01 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i like to ask MMS certain question

1) when we will get electricity from this nuclear dear ?? its 2022
2) How much cost we need to do for make 15 reactor and plant ??? its 25,00,000 crore
3) How much % of GDP for next 15 yrs indian govt will transfer for this dear ?? Yearly 7%...

4) Why US and Europe using nuclear power ?? because theya re getting sun light for around 4 hours at 20 degree tempreture for jsut 150 days a year..

5) Why india not requried nuclear enegry for power.?? because india is getting at least 8 hours sunlight for 300 days in a year and at 35 degree tempreture..

6) How much solar penal cost for getting 3 unit of electricity which is avg consumption of indian house hold..?? a person required 10 sq ft solar penal to get 4 unit electricty from solar energy daily.. and it cost around 70000.

7) If govt want to make 10 cr house with solar penals by giving 50% subsidy it means 35000 how much it will cost.. ??? It will cost 10 cr X 35000 Rs = 3,50,000 cr and 10 cr family means at least 40 cr people..

8) when u can get solar energy ?? next day from installation.. till next 10 yrs..

9) 3000 km long sea cost can use for tidle energy as well as wind farm..

why govt not looking at this things???

we are looking at 2022 but what ab economy when crude will be 200 dollar,..???

Each solar chip (A panel contains large numbers of chips) consumes more energy in its making than it can deliver in its entire life.

Now tell us, is solar energy even a remote alternative??

The answer is simple. Congress govt does not trust the Indian genius. They would rather buy crappy technology from abroad rather than looking into Indian ideas and products.

Penal? As in Indian Penal code? Now you want Solar Penal codes too? (spelt that way twice)...

Most of US has more sunlight than India. Solar energy is expensive -- the "penals" are expensive, then you need batteries to store the power. Plus, households are not the chief consumer of energy, it's industry. Try powering an office with solar "penals" never mind a steel smelting plant.

If alternate energy was that easy, everyone would be using it, including the US. They are paying money to the middle east and that money is used by terrorists against them. YOu think they are stupid? We use oil because we have no choice. US stopped using nuclear after the 3 mile island accident and oil/coal was cheap then. Not any more.

The nuclear reactor figure is a bunch of baloney. We have more than 15 nuclear reactors already, built with American/canadian/soviet help. Just quote random figueres... Each reactor, by your estimate costs 25,00,000/(15*40) =>$4166cr => 41660 million => 41.6 billion. Each nuclear plant actually costs just a few billion. The outrageous number you have quoted $625 billion -- the Indian economy is about 1 trillion dollars.

For someone with a last name of patel, you are pretty pathetic with money related calculations...

Nuclear makes sense exactly at a time when oil is $200 a barrel. The deal is to allow import of fissile material, not necessarily buy reactors. We can build our own now. We just dont have enough fuel.

by strange quirks of fate, the best person that congress can come up with is aligned more with BJP than with congress ... and jealous BJP is left scratching their head ... most of the BJPians love this deal including Advani ... but just to play opposition they are raking it up ...

dear Advani, it is time to come out fully in support of the deal ... there is no loss of face ... afterall politics is the art of possible ... poeple really want this deal ... please end this unneccessary tussle.

dasgupta sums it up exactly right
by Pradip Parekh on Jul 17, 2008 02:29 AM  Permalink

i always enjoy swapan dasgupta's articles. this one is a real gem. there are times when you say "i wish i had said that", and this surely is one. the point to note, all said and done, the vote is not on the nuke deal, it is the vote on the nincompoop ever bungling gandhi party govt. india surely have the nuke deal; the right party to be gracing over it, however, should be the next elected govt run by a pm who actually can vote in loksabha.

N-Deal does not in any way signify strategic alliance with the US
by Sincere Citizen on Jul 16, 2008 10:15 PM  Permalink

The assumption that by signing this deal we will be closer to the US is absolutely wrong and is the sole reason why many people are supporting this deal.

Frankly for India to get closer to the US and have any strategic alliance of any significance whatsoever they will first have to get the US out of the Pakistan maya jaal.

Frankly the US has shown absolutely no understanding of power play or strategic depth till date when it comes to dealing with rogue nations.

The policy of US to use any means to score points over their opponents (USSR in past ) has backfired badly and is the main cause of problems today, first they need to be trained in thinking and their thoughts need to be aligned with ours (assuming we both are striving for same goals).

Any alliance without that could be a disaster for India because of our proximity to the US enemies namely the Pakistan, China.

Frankly our leadership simply does not seem to have any understanding of power plays and leveraging your strengths to get what we want.

Instead they seem to be more interested in supporting their ego with this N-deal.

Strategy my foot.
