Look at the Positives
by All Right on Jul 16, 2008 03:46 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There were only 2 accidents - Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and that happened decades ago. So safety standards have improved.

Secondly, like IT it opens India to be a major player in the nuclear market. Our technology is cutting edge. The only place we trail is uranium. That too will change when our fast breeders go operational since we have abundance of thorium and the process converts into uranium

The author of the article is known nuclear dissenter. We can ask him, why he did not quit
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and instead retired as its head. Couldn't he had made a point while in service? Why now? Are egos involved or is he a commie or knickerwallah?

Easy to criticise anyone who criticise n deal as 'commie or knickerwallah'. 'commie or knickerwallah' r the only people who hv some principles. All others, incl Congress, r controlled / dictated by a person or dynasty.

NSA, FS, DAE, PM, and Maino. All are telling everything and Giving Assurances Only in Words.
Those words are not found written in the Agreements.

The Problem is that People are concerned that the Text is Interpretable at the Readers Convenience. And The Fear is that the Future Players in Washington can Interpret in their OWN way.

Our People Occupying Offices are Giving Only their Own Interpretations and Asking us to sleep in solace.

BUT the Country needs the Assurances - Written in The Agreements AND Not be something Inferable due to the vagueness of the Text.

If This is the Best India could get, OK! That Shows the Competence of our Govt.

It is not as simple as you think. Do you think a written document from government will settle everything?
Even with the available(told) information, a lot of people have no clue what is going on and some simple souls end up with wrong information and they oppose.
Firstly, there is misinformation and incorrect interpretations of whatever information is available. People opposing this come up with mis-information like:
- World Uranium deposits will end by 2030
- US wants to sell off old equipment to India
- India has enough Uranium till 2010.
Then there are unfounded conspiracy theories such as:
- Kalam and SP leader went to US some time back guess why?
- India will loose it independence.
- India's domestic program will be hurt.
- Manmohan wants to sell India.
- Many others.

Only after above is taken care of, written agreement has some meaning.

What looks like nonsense to you is actually nonsense propagated by some folks on these boards only. I am just repeating it here.
But probably it is too much for you to understand.
I would strongly recommend, you go find a brain. Your head is empty.
If you have not content to write, shutup and do some research. Don't just write any junk.

Spreading fear
by Sandeep on Jul 16, 2008 02:45 PM  Permalink

This is plainly a misleading article. Going by this logic, no big project should be taken up in India since that will involve big business.

Clearly the issues is - We need nuclear energy as also all renewable resources we can use which includes solar/wind etc however small their potential currently. Clearly India has huge shortage of power and this needs to be attacked urgently.

We need to get as much energy and as fast as possible without relying on oil. Energy can be a bigger problem in future than worrying about some countries stopping nuclear fuel supply or big business based on unproven conspiracy theories.

Not all the reactors have to come under safeguards. There will for sure be a problem if India decides to explode another nuclear device but then does that look likely in near future?
Hopefully, we got enough information from last explosions to not having to repeat it for next 10 years. Then bank supplies in parallel just in case we have to later on..

Current economic uranium resources will last for over 100 years at current consumption rates, while it is expected there is twice that amount awaiting discovery. With reprocessing and recycling, the reserves are good for thousands of years.[34]. It is estimated that 5.5 million tonnes of uranium ore reserves are economically viable[35] , while 35 million tonnes are classed as mineral resources (reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction).[36] An additional 4.6 billion tonnes of uranium are estimated to be in sea water (Japanese scientists in the 1980s showed that extraction of uranium from sea water using ion exchangers was feasible

We all looked upto Mr Prasad to bring about a different persepctive to the whole debate and throw light on the subject.

Many people think that the present administrators or scientific community is only following the Government's line just out of protocol and without valid reason.
Mr A N Prasad being a former director, had an opportunity to show us the other side of the coin.
But he too have come up with an article that is too generic, shallow and simple arguments of a "commoner" that we read every day. Even few journalist would write far more "indepth" article on the subject and arguing far more convincingly either in favour or against the deal.

A huge let down by Mr A N Prasad.

When we expect an article on Nuclear deal from a former scientist, we expect a lot more in depth.

Mr Prasad should have left the business angle to any normal journalist.

He touches upon the issue in the last paragraph what has been told by "commoners".

A critical analysis from a scientist point of view is missing.

May be he just not have much to talk about.

And that's OK.

NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA
by VS Subramaniam on Jul 16, 2008 12:41 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I FULLY AGREE WITH THIS EXPERT OPINION OF THIS EXPERT.INDIA SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON THIS UNRELIABLE AMERICANS
IT IS FOOLISH TO GO FOR NUCLEAR ENERGY. IT IS HAZARDOUS AND UNSAFE AND VERY COSTLY IN LONG RUN
INDIA IS IN A TROPICAL AREA AND PLENTY OF SOLAR ENERGY AVAILABLE AND ALSO WIND ENERGY
WE ARE NOT EXPERT IN NUCLEAR SAFTY. EVEN THE ADVACED COUNTRY LIKE USA AND RUSSIA COULD NOT AVOID THE CASES LIKE THREE MILE ISLLAD AND CHERNOBYIL. WE SHOULD TRAP GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
WHICH IS CHEAP ALSO
WE SHOULD DO RESEARCH FOR USING THE POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SEA WATER DEPTH . UTILIZING THE SEA WATER HYDRO PRESSURE DEPTH
AMERICAN BUSINESS MEN WILL GIVE ONLY SUBSTANDARD MATERIAL.
IN ALL SENSE NUCLEAR ENERGY IS HIGHLY UNSAFE AND COSTLY IN LONG RUN AS WE HAVE TO DEPEND ON IMPORTED URANIUM

This article is based on hypothesis and so are your ideas which are unproven for any large scale energy production.
Japan produces 40% and France ~70% of their enrgy from Nuclear.
India has to get on bandwagon and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Well, a lot on the Nuclear deal has been discussed about. The Pros and Cons.

And a lots rhetorics too followed.

As if we are about to commit a harakiri and drain out our treasury next friday.

Nothing can be short-sighted than this.

Why are we hurrying up then?

Our reactors are starved of resources, is well-known. We are deprived of best of technologies in healthcare, telemetry and other fields are also well recorded. The fact that we can not import ultra-light tennis racket speaks of volumes about the international isolation that we are facing today.

Now, at this moment, USA wants to dribble the ball for us.

Let's set aside the reasons for a moment. But USA is dirtying its hands for us in terms of influencing Australia and NSG, IAEA, its own Congress to have a deal with India.

We surely could not have done this all alone.

George Bush wants to do it before end of his tenure.

He has set the whole machinery in roll for this.

And he has succeeded to a large extent.

Bush's positive actions and temperament has even led Obama to go in favour of the Nuclear deal with India.

Chinese have okayed it.

France is all set to open the business with India and may even change its global outlook towards India, which has not been very positive so far.

Well, that's a huge political willingness in favour of India.

India should grab the opportunity. And grab the deal.

Left was asked to let some member swear in and then they could be allowed to see reports but the did not do that. One wonders why.. Maybe because they were closed to reason and set on opposing the deal in any case.

Name a few facts in the article..

Enron went up because of naptha prices spiralling out of control as article says.
Nothing is guaranteed but right now price of Uranium is pretty cheap.

contd...

Whether we "operationalise" the deal in its current flavour depends on us.

If we show reluctant at a later stage to buy a particular technology or even show our reluctance about "perpetuity", then it's the business lobby in USA that would work hard to change the policy.

And they usually succeed.

We do not have to do much.

We just need to ride the waves and set a motion in our favour.

And slowly, we will have whatever we always wanted.

We will have the cake and eat it too.

The game has to be dynamic.

And we should play it now. Or, never.
