Indian POWs in Pakistan
by Suresh Bhave on Feb 19, 2008 02:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Ninety one Indian personnel of the armed foces(according to the latest Indian government averment)have been languishing in Pakistani jails for over thirty seven years. At least one and may be two have been behind Pakistani prison walls since the 1965 conflict. With the return of democracy to Pakistan Indian government must renew their effort to bring these POWs who went to war for their country as boys and have grown to old age in under terrible conditions that prevail in the jails in the subcontinent. Let us forget about what mistakes the officers of our forces made while excahnging prisoners after the conflicts, just overlook the transgressions of Geneva Convention, aim at getting the old men who left home as boys to defend the country. Let them spend their years of lengthening shadows in the loving company of their families in the warmth of their own homes, just so that their strangled spirits and long held breaths might find release in the fianl few years of lives that have been spent in captivity in foreign land. If there are any Pakistani POWs, they deserve the same generosity that ours deserve, just let them go home. They also are brave individuals who were fighting for what their country believes is a just cause. Our government strives to retrieve criminals ensconced in luxury in Pakistan, but not our soldiers who are, sons, brothers husbands and bear the loving burden of every sort of human relationship with us. The govt must not miss thsi opportunity.

Suresh, since 1965 so many 'democratic' governments have come and gone, has govt of India been able to bring back our soldiers from pakistani prisons? Then why r u being over-enthusiast for a regime change in a country (Pakistan) where every politician and citizen (not outside but in heart) hate our country and its ppl? So, my brother just cool down and don't dream 'hypothetical'!
And this Kalyan (who seems to be a paki), u also need to confirm the source of your origin i.e. your father!!

My dear Rinku, the world lives on hope and the relations of these soldiers are also surviving on hope. What is needed is the political will on the part of the politicians and military officers on both the sides of the border. These soldiers are no longer in the prime of their lives and cannot possibly be any threat to the others' countries. As for Kalyan Kumar's origin, whoever he might be, there is plenty of proof including the mention of at least 41 Indian POWs in Z. A. Bhutto's biography, there is at least one sighting by an American journalist who carried the photograph of one such POW back with him from Pakistan and there are communications from one POW at least that reached his home through friendly Pakistani nationals visiting India. There is at least one news item during 1971 conflict of Flt Lt Tambay having been taken prisoner by Pakistanisecurity forces. He has not returned. There are reports by Indian civilian prisoners released by Pakistan who have met these men who are in the limbo. It is high time that the PM particularly showed the statesmanship expected of a wise and experienced old man and got our brothers back from captivity that they never deserved in the first place.

Suresh, Ofcourse world lives on hope, but in this case even hopes don't look for hope out of sheer cowardice from Indian politicians! And u talked about statesmanship from Mr. Manmohan Singh, i presume u know about him well. He may be a good economist but when it comes to show some courage, he is too timid. He has lost his self-respect, so ofcourse he cann't care about countrymen's self-respect. The day he will realize that he is the PM, he might show some courage. Till the u cann't expect any short of courage atleast in the case of return of POWs. And why only blame Mr. Singh, Vajpayee was no less timid. Huh, 36 years down the line, every short of jokers have come and gone, but nobody cared about our heros.

My dear Kalyan Kumar. there is nothing secret about what I have written, it is available on the Internet. Search for Indian POWs in Pakistan and you will read from the source what I ahve stated above. The relations of these prisoners whom I have met are living in a pall of gloom since they heard the news that their men were POWs left behind as the living legacy of the wars. You may ahve read that last year General Musharraf invited the relations of such officers to search the jails in Pakistan. These visitors are not policemen, nor are they experts on matters of criminal law, investigations, etc. Two democracies should be able to sort out this matter if Libya and Sub Saharan Africa could sort out their POWs issue after 25 years

Forming government in Pakistan
by BHARAT on Feb 19, 2008 01:09 PM  Permalink

Fpr parliamentary democracy, both the government as well as the opposition will have to play fair, constructive and progressive roll. The best way for MQM is to let PPP and PML-N form the government and to play its part as an opposition party. By operating as a constructive opposition, they can develop a good rapo with the people of Pakistan.
