Can someone explain why the Left is against the deal? My general understanding of the reason Left is agaisnt the deal is bcoz they say we will not be able to test any nuclear weapons and if we do US will impose some kind of penalty. What penalty is not clear, may be US will stop supplying technology to us or some believe US will take back the equipment.
My point is haven't we already tested nukes once or twice in the past? and from what i understand they seem to work fine...do we need to test it like every now and then is it whether our nukes work or not? i have a feeling we don't need to test them anymore, we know they work, we have them and god forbid the time never comes to use them. the end.
So in the end somebody please tell me what the hell is Left's problem!

Left si against the deal as they feel that we have to change our foreign policies and it'll further help in US imperialism. They are not sure about what an imperialism means here but?...
In case of test India has to show the reasons..if reasons are acceptable by International community (members of NSG, IAEA and US Senate) ..then no sanctions...otherwise...no fuel supply(uranium)...the reason is no one can use other people property to make bombs (like we did in 1974 nuclear tests)...

Nuclear test are in four categories:
1) surface 2) water (never done by us) 3) underground (never done by us) 4) space(only US is capable of it)
To fine tune nuclears bombs we need 100's of test..but the most important thing is even if we have bomb we don't have the capability or system to use it except for the prithvi missiles(250 Km max)..
In nuclear field to get mastery you need a expertise of 30-40 yrs and we don't have even for a good 2 years. As compared to permanent members we are surely very weak in that manner.

Hi Gautam, A right question to ask. The Left has supported the govt for the common Minimum Program (CMP) the n deal was not the part of CMP. The 123 agreement with the usa is a agreement allowing the US and its partner countries to supply fuel (Either Uranium or Plutonium) for civilian reactors for power generation. Along with the 123 agreement we have to bind and sign the IAEI (International Atomic Energy Inspections) agreement to ensure that we have a separate civil and military developments. as well as CTBT ( Comprenhsive Test Ban Treaty). only after signing these agreements the 123 will be operational. India has objections to CTBT as this will limit or stop our developments on military activities like the missile and aerospace technology. Practically speaking the engines developed for Missiles are used also in IRSO Launch vehicles. Also similar technology is used to develop aerospace (fighter planes) technology. Secondly India also has objections to Hyde act which is a obligation on the US government to safe guard the N-supply to the 123 agreement binding countries. The 123 agreement also restricts on certain N developments and research. Secondly US will have access to our R&D related to all Nuclear field as a clause of the 123 agreement. Nuke technology is not only used to make weapons and power but has lot of other activities. The Americans might bring almost all the R&D activities of India especially Isotopes and nuke medical research under its scanner.

BJP withdrew from the agreement as they did not want US to access our nuke developments nor stop the indigenous research and development activities. Even as of today India has no objections for IAEI and 123 agreement (As per the scientists) but the Hyde Act and CTBT is of much concerns to our developments, as once we stop the developments and research we will be dependent on the NSG for the supply of fuel forever. In short with the 123 agreement into force India will have to close all its research activities related to Nuclear field, this will in turn have a brain wash from our country to US or other countries in next 25 years we will have no fuel no research no one to work on this technology and will be heavily dependent on the NSG group for everything. Secondly the US is mingling with our foreign policies thru its dirty pressure techniques; see for the case of Saddam%u2019s hanging, Iran N issue, Burma trouble, etc. In short dont just look at the N-deal, look at the complete picture. I might be wrong can someone correct me.

123 is a clause in the US energy law. It deals with the nuclear co-operation with other countries.
Congress president Mrs Sonia Gandhi%u2019s remarks in Haryana on 7th October, 2007 that opponents of the Indo-US nuclear deal were against the country%u2019s progress saying it reflected %u201Cthe dictatorial attitude of the Congress%u201D. Media says it is a befitting reply to the Left. US ambassador Ronen Singh also said earlier the same kind of comment that opponents of the Indo-US nuclear deal are %u2018headless chickens%u2019. I think both the speeches, %u2018headless chicken%u2019 and %u2018befitting reply%u2019 made in the same factory.
Sonia said the same what her son said as two childish comments at the time of UP Elections. First was on Babri Masjid Demolition and Nehru family. Second was his credit of Pakistan-Bangladesh Division. People rejected both ideas. Befitting reply will come into a civil war in our country, what Mushraff brought into Pakistan. America does their duty to divide and rule India. We are continuing our struggle against communalism even after 60 years of Independence, what Britishers gave us in the name of India and Pakistan. Can you please enlighten us oh bright one as how this deal is bad for India. How will this lead to some people eating "Biryani" and some people be in dark. No one I repeat none opposing this deal have come out with convincing answers as how this deal is bad for India. This deal is bad for 3 people 1) China 2) Pakistan 3) All people on their roles. Dispute me with facts if you can... Have you read the deal, can you give us sources of other alternate fuels, why did your great left friends oppose when we did nuclear test, why did yoru left friends support China in 1962 war???????? Who is ready KHAYALI BIRYANI Left or Congress???
