Oh man, silly discussion below makes one wonder where we are heading. Let's see:
1. Women should be encouraged to work because it benefits whole society as otherwise our total workforce pool will be reduced by half.
2. Laws/workplaces should be encouraging towards having family as otherwise our society will be doomed. Whole society is reponsible to give birth and raise happy and healthy kids.
1. Ms /Mr Vicky first rule in Journalism corroborate what u are gonna write .. 2. Given the scenario in IT , its highly likely that women vying with men do not claim this benifit lest they fall back in the corporate ladder . they are well aware of the extra 30K tax benifit but not aware of the minimum Maternity leave ... thats a huge pile of bovine crap i must say !!!

Completely Agree. This is journalism by a complete novice. There is a law in India for manadatory 3 months maternity leave. No company worth its salt can do this stupidity. I am sure Rediff needs better researchers.
Read this for better understanding
Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 says that Google it to read the details. I hope Rediff is better informed next time.
If a woman wants to go on leave, she should take unpaid vacation. I wonder why the company has to bear the cost? If you care for your family, then you got to do it!

The law has been made to remind males that earlier job rules were drafted by some stupid males. It is high time to recognize that rules have to be made by also taking females in mind. We males see the world from our own sweet eyes and do not want to share it with females. It is NOT normal not to have maternity leave since males do not conceive. :-)

In that case, to keep it fair, housewives who get pregnant should also get paid for 3 months? :-) Who will pay? Maybe the government should pay.

It is a choice by the female to work or not to work. If they work they get paid by the employer. The essense of law is not to discriminate a female on some thing that is her right. BTW there is a law by Indian government to provide the upkeep of all pregnant females for free in Government Hospitals. This is under a WHO program.

the law is there coz of folks like you, who question every little concession given to females in our society which is not known for gender equality. You know what if more females don't work our society might collapse because of all the fighting between wife and husband's parents lol. If there is an extended family I find houses where ladies work to be more stable than in which ladies dont work and invariably get into fights with husbands parents.

why just female IT professionals pal most male IT guys are also egoistic and boast of buying a 60L house and boast about going to US/UK etc. I find most IT professionals to be egoistic and stupid

So??? It is not gals or guys, it is human to get egoistic when things are going well. People start feeling like the industry is functioning because of them. When things come crashing is when reality will strike. IT industry is majorly dependent on US market. With the sub-prime issue and credit-card debts, it is just a matter of time when the debacle will hit indian shores.

The decision is totally the choice of partners. Different people have differnt likes and priorities in life. the problem is having partners with differnt priorities, one conflicting the interest of other. Dont force a female to leaver her job and remain inside the kitchen taking care of childrens and you.
Even after saying above, the best part of INDIAN females are they love remaining at home, taking care ,showering love to the whole familiy. and some do even do creative works to help her spouse during the free time in between.
hats off to females, We are nothing without you around through out our life.
I'm sure most companies give 3 months maternity leave and many of them also give 1 year lop leave for raising the child. I wonder when these activists will ever be productive.

It is sweet, we cannot spit; and bitter, we cannot swallow.
Whether it is high, middle or low income class, children, both boys and girls are too eager to establish their career, which is good for their future.
In my opinion, girls should be given very good education in a field they like best until they reach to certain age, say 25 years. Then just occupy in the field to be in touch and plan for a family. I may say they can actively plan to take 7 to 10 years by which time their children will be 7 to 9 years. Subsequently, give more attention to their career, i.e. after 35 years more ideally. Their children will also be growing and steadily they can set their foot in the field they like best.
It is not one to six months affair to bring up a child. let them take many years. When both the parents are working, it is good on money point of view, but the children will drift away. Children will love worldly things more than their parents. Under a loving and caring parent, children will take a different course which will ultimately be useful to their future life and society at large. Earning money should not be the motto of a family.

yep life is a series of compromises and one has to strike the right balance, but can money be ignored ? it is a huge factor and greater money means more easier life for the next generation. Everything requires lots of money buying a house, educating, marrying etc. Also after a person starts to work his/her outlook changes and it is difficult to get back to pure domesticity unless you have achieved everything in your career which is pretty much impossible. Before marriage itself one should have clear expectations from the prospective life partner.
