Nuclear Power and future of India
by on Jan 21, 2008 08:18 AM  Permalink

India is the cradle of human civilization and knowledge. We have the ability and potential to make it on our own. We do not need to bow down or depend on other countries or wait for other countries to control us. Recently Australia has refused to sell uranium to India. It's O.K. It's their loss. They would rather sell uranium to countries like China which have never abided by the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and who are illegally occupieing Tibet. One day one of the warheads with Aussie uranium is gonna land on Australia. Then they might realise thier mistakes. India has never invaded anyone in it's history. India is the best friend that any country can have. All Indians should unite irrespective of religion, dialect, cast or whatever and build a strong India. Afterall India is the epicentre of this world. I for one have dicided that it's a calling I cannot ignore anymore. I'm sorry I'm not IT savvy, but if not I would set up my own website and garner as much support as I can. I will learn. Any Indians out there with me on our this journey for a greater INDIA.

Yes we should show the US Government that we can also quit our new nuclear deal with us. They should know that we can also make nuclear power without them

I think it makes sense for secretary Dr. Kakodkar to make it public. this bares the fact that the govt in the center is trying to hush up things and pushing the nuclear deal before we reach a stage where the scientists can evaluate the state of self sufficiency we can reach... the bureaucrats n the politico are trying to suppress the opinion of scientific community before getting into such a deal where instead of achieving energy security we are getting energy Insecurity...

Safety
by Subhasish Ghosh on May 22, 2007 07:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Some of the concerns, which has hardly got any attention yet (atleast in media and public awareness:
1. Disposal of nuclear waste (Location and methodology) It remains a major concern in most nations using technology and curretn methods use remote dumping in deep underground tunnels specially created for disposal. They are controversial , pose security and health concerns for public who may be unaware of disposal site. No comment on how govt plans to handle disposal of production level waste.

2. Emergency preparedness and treatment facilities in case of a disaster. Knowledge about isolation plans and public awareness of safety. Given the average safety record on many govt run services, these facilties have no tolerance for failure. No talks has yet surfaced about how India deals with these very demanding requirements when we do not have an efficient basic medical response system or planning measures as reserved lanes for emergency crews in our transportation systems. Always remember the Cheronbyl disaster..While these may be dealt on finalization of a deal, a gurantee not to short change these requirements should be made to the public before making any deals or proceeding with nucelar power ambitions.

Guys,
We need this kind of energy resources to sustain our growth. Do you know France how megawatts are generated by France using neuclear power? have you heard about any accident there?
We Indian do not take any initiative and always follow other which leads to many crises like energy crises which we are facing now.
Only Chernobyl has happend till now. We know that there are many casualtities due to Plane accident but did people stopped flying.
Do you kwon how much gree house gases are generated by coal based power plant?
We are always negative. There are N number of Megha Patkar in all areas.
Guys, please note that every thing has pluse and minus, we need to weigh and see that in any project has how many plus and how many minus points are there.

Hope every one understand the gravity of the situation.

we indians are basically risk averse people..a.k.a DARPOK.

can't take any decision. will typically take 10 years to arrive at any decision. to give you a few examples.

1) we cannot decide if we shoudl scrap Arjun Tank Project which was started in 1974 !

2) We cannot decide if we should go ahead with nuclear power or not. wait another 10 years.

3) We cannot make up our mind on how to control population...etc.

you see basically we indians are good at leg pulling ..not strategic thinking...because that's what we learn.

Uranium
by Srinand Kaushik on May 22, 2007 07:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Industrial development / financials and Nature are mutually exclusive. The biggest commerical hub or street in any city do not have even a single tree. Mankind's next expliotation of the nature would be Uranium ?

I beg to differ. Your statement is a little myopic - does not go beyond Indian Cities. Take New York City for example - arguably the Financial capital of the world. You can find trees in most places and there is the huge Central park occupying acres of land in Manhattan. Not just NY - Across the developed world you can find this everywhere. Even in Brazil - another developing nation like us - you can see how much environment in given importance to.

There was provision of parks, empty space, trees everywhere in these mega cities. But our politicians bought those big chunks of land and had to make big buildings so that they can earn money to sustain and feed their family(which wud have died otherwise due to starvation). Hence no trees in any city of india.
I wonder, in delhi so many illegal buildings were demolished, but why no one filed case against the local MLA Or the concerned officer who allowed those constructions.

fuel recycling
by Mukesh Garg on May 22, 2007 06:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Mr Kakodkar's argument about fuel recycling is very informative (and ofcourse tells us how useful it is). I wonder why its not followed by every nuclear power generating plant. Cutting down waste to such minimal level, and getting several times more output from same fuel will be fabulous.

True, nuclear recycling reduces fuel wastes, but one of the byproducts of the recycling procedure is Polonium. Till date no ideal method has been found to recycle this. The net result is still sealing off the wastes, albeit a lot less, and burying them in the ground or sinking them in the seas. Who knows what that will lead to in 100-200 or a 1000 years?

Sticking to timelines
by Mukesh Garg on May 22, 2007 06:49 PM  Permalink

Saying that it wud be ready by 2011 is one thing, and getting it done is other thing. I would hope that timelines and quality are very strictly monitored in fast breeder reactor project so that we really can have it by the projected timeframe.
