As most people have already mentioned, education is a big business in US - not only for the universities but also for the banks the lend to students.

So, aspiring students better do their research before flying to US. I have personally seen Indian students feeling bad after choosing a wrong university.

If money is the only concern, nowadays software engineers in US make more money that students.

All said, India, no doubt, can produce the brightest B.E's in the world. But do we have the proper infrastructure and funding to support MS and PhDs? So why fret about people leaving India.

When it comes to settling down in a foreign country, its a matter of personal choice. You dont have control over what the other guy chooses.

And please dont see one side of the coin. With the amount of globalization we witness, boundaries are shrinking. A lot of Indians are returning back to India nowadays, which is a shift from the 1990s. Salute all those who contributed to India's growth. Its because of them that we have foreign students in India and many other birds back migrating to their home.

I know good job, salary, technology and all the latest gadgets are important in life and for country.
But we also need clean air, water, lakes, rivers, big urban parks, unspoiled jungles, high octane number fuel for automobiles, civilized society, good garbage and sanity disposal system, clean public transport, good social security, public services and public health care. We need place for walking, running, hiking, swimming pools, river rafting, cycling, skiing, boating and all sorts of sports activities for public.

Sure we do, because these are also called basic needs of healthy life.
Now let us see how many trees, Parks, pools, Ponds, rivers etc are in each state in India.
New constructions are coming up by removing trees. I do not remember if there is any sports made free to public and kids to enjoy. No Parks to play.
So where is Clena air in India, Mumbai, Delhi, Calcuttam Banglore, Lucknow, Agra etc ???

US wants to open its doors to Indian students HAHA what a joke
by Nandita Dsouza on Mar 27, 2007 03:17 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a joke.Only software engineers as far as i know get to go to study or work in US.Hardly other students in other fields get to go to US.Its a shame they talk like this but when you go to get visa you dont get it.I have a friend who has her brother mother in US she hasnt gotten US visa to go live with them so past 24years shes here and they are there its so sad. What is this guy talking about? When students go for US visa the interviewer at consulate doesnt even look at the papers documents just ask some silly questions say this person is risk of immigrating visa rejected.Ive seen students who failed here get visa to study in US and rank students who havent gotten visa to study in US.These people say one thing in words and actions its very different.

Not true, Nandita... I personally know students in the US who are architecture grads and science and engineering grads other than software engineering grads. It's true that there are nott as many Indian liberal arts students, but India as a whole doesn't spend much money to learn liberal arts. As far as the fields of study in which we are prominent, we are well represented in the US.

nonsense

It is surprising to see people still engaging in the same tiresome rant which includes criticizing people who choose to move out of the country and reminders about not forgetting "roots".

What roots? Humans originated in Africa - which means our roots are in Africa. How many of us have any knowledge of our roots? It is a nonsensical concept. Stop being narrow-minded and learn to look at the world as a whole.

India benefits in a number of ways by people who move out given the huge population. Be thankful that people are moving out and creating more room for those who are inside the country. Every software engineer who migrates creates a job inside India; every student who moves on to graduate school outside is creating a job in India. And this is bad, according to some ignoramus.

Not just that. If you talk of roots, how many families in India sit together and celebrate events together. How proud Indians feet tp speak Hindi or their regional languages.
On the contraty I see high respect of such things in US when I went there to visit.

I agree with you XY. Roots means nothing till we do something to make sure we are connected ethenically, regionlly, religiously and family. Root does not mean anything. I strogly believe NRIs are most Indians as compared to we Indians living in India. How many of us get up and stand with respect when national anthem is played?
How and why do we speak of roots, when we do not know what needs to be done to show connection with the roots.

I agree with your comments. I have worked for a long time in the US and in India. Both countries are great democracy and offer great things.

Both countries have issues, but nobody is perfect.

I totally disagree with the critics of Indians migrating to US. Yes, many did leave India to greener pastures, but what is wrong with that???

Many people migrate from villages to cities, and never return back. Does that mean that person is a traitor??? Migration is what made Human race develop in all the continents.

People in the US, contribute to their motherland in many indirect ways. Indians living in US also work hard and make India proud.

Infact, many Indians living in the US are following Indian culture more strictly than many of the young generations in Indian metros. I see them aping western cultures more and more in upscale DElhi, Bombay etc, so does that mean they are not Indians???

What makes one Indian is not where one lives, but what belief ,culture ands social values one follows.

You can be an American in India, and an Indian in America

Indian Education is the BEST ???
by Golu Gayani on Mar 27, 2007 01:10 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I can agree with my peers that Indian education is the best. But please provide the percentage of Indian population able to meet the education level up to graduate or Post graduate. Please plug in the tital population of India before you do your maths.
Also please plug in the total Professional jobs currently being employed against the population of India and education ratio to work out HOW GOOD and how much Opportunity one can get in India.
Please do the Maths (because India is good in algerba - so called) before sharing the GREAT VIEWS.
I do not say India is not good, but when we talk of opportunity let us be Honest. India is good because we have lots of time to waste, sit and chat around, but other countries are bad because we do not have that time to waste.
See how much time is wasted in India Vs US.

WASTE OF MONEY
by UmaShankar SathyaKumar on Mar 27, 2007 12:24 AM  Permalink

TO ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS:

US colleges and Universities want to grab your bank loan and savings to become rich. The US qualification is simply good for nothing thesedays. Don't waste your money to end up working as taxi driver or in petrol station in the US to pay back your loan for years. Many students wants to study in US so that they can somehow find a H1-B sponsor and settle in US. It was suitable during 1990-2000. Now thats not practically makes any sense. The world has changes a lot.

If you want to work and live abroad. Do the following:

1) From the age 14, prepare and study a course in India, which will be highly required in the west. Due to the aging population and with US school students increasingly shunning mathematics and the science subjects, you will have good chances of getting right job.
2) Improve your English and learn a foreign language in India say French, German, Spanish or Japanese.
3) Enroll in Professional associations related to your profession. So, you will know what's happening in your industry in Abroad as well as in India.
4) After working atleast three years in India, Apply for migration to the country of your choice. Australia, Ireland, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Newzeland and other countries are opening up their stringent immigration policies due to lack of talent and skills.
5) Immigration is far more cheaper than studying in the US. Do not bank on H1-B or Green Card. It is not worth risking your time, money and life for that piece of paper.

I know Indian doctors lived for more than 30 years are coming back to India. Because, they see far more job satification in India by doing what they always want to do rather living as a rich slave in the US.

Remember INDIA IS BETTER THAN MANY WESTERN COUNTRIES IN EDUCATION. I know students of class 6 in the US and UK, who can't read properly in English.

Like Medical Tourism and Outsourcing, You will soon see Schools, Colleges and Universities enrolling NRI and overseas students like the few in Bangalore. It will be called 'STUDY IN INDIA' like Indians do.

Use USA for getting better in Life. Don't let the USA to use you to become rich. Got my point?
