N-deal
by vinay kapur on Jun 04, 2007 07:40 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Isn't it time India puts in place an appropriate Act to protect its sovereignty.Any agreement with international ramifications, full of ifs and buts, based on suspicion and mistrust, requiring cumbersome multilayered negotiations for many months does not work in the long run.At best it becomes a "deal" as against an agreement arrived at with mutual consent and respect.

A great point Vinay. This could be a good way for opposition parties in the parliament to standup and get counted. Plus it would give Indian negotiators something to point at and say that they are restricted by Indian laws as Burns and others are restricted by US laws. But I think PM and others are making sure that they are working with all parties to "keep them in loop". Which means they are making sure that no such act is introduced in the parliament. Two different forms of "Democracy" I guess.

Very Good Point Vinay. India needs such policies in many other fields to like caste based reservations, Income Tax payment, credential/background check of candidates getting elected to legislature and even party memberships and such other things to add to the list.
Hope this great Act on soveriegnity is put in place on urgent basis with special parliament session to put in place before anything..

The treatment is different because India is not China. You cannot expect to have same deal with every customer, or do you?

Bahmophet,

You know what america is? a nation won by irish people by killing native americans called "american indians". Now we Bhartiya or Indians are considered as somewhat inferior race, thanks to our nation's name.
Secondly, we are direct competetor to America's forte, "knowledge/skills" whereas China is into manufacturing/blue collar jobs, which americans do not mind losing as that doesnt earn them big bucks.
Third, we do not have good lobbying powers [political influence] and indian business setups in USA so the social influences are negligible.
Finally, accept it or not, a gujju can fight punjabi and vice versa but no indian thinks of fighting any American if they insult them or fool them... all we hate is "each other".

TP Srinivasan Article
by Prabhat Sharma on Jun 04, 2007 05:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The article written by an Indian with USA perspective and not Indian perspective. Nation should not compromise on its national security. India has a excellant record of non proliferation and unilaterally taken an obligation of no further testing, unless required by supreme national Interest. Considering the neighbourhood of India, this should be good enough for any country with good intention to India. I am sure they will come around as they need to sell the nuclear technology and they see India as a big market for it. All we need to do is not to blink.

I completely agree with the idea that it's equally, if not more, in America's interest to sign the deal beacause of the economics. America is a materialistic world and will not be able to ignore their own buisness lobby who are eagerly waiting for revival of nuclear industry. We only need to hold on to our values and committments for some time and not show undue hurry though in that process we may suffer a little.

Let's go it alone
by Pradeep Rao on Jun 04, 2007 05:33 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We canot accept a deal that lets the US treat us differentially from the way it treats France or UK. Let us pursue the long and hard road to nuclear self-reliance, and teach ourselves how to make nuclear power the energy of our future and make and test our own fast breeder reactors, H-bombs, neutron bombs and so on. The US looked the other way and did not aplly its own laws when the Chinese proliferated appropos Pakistan. Now it's too late to give up these hateful things - we live in a tough neighborhood

Pradip

The problem for India is, due to the abysmal leadership of Nehrus, we missed the bus in 1950s and 60s. We still need to test H Bombs and fine tune our delivery systems.

If the above consideration is getting compromised, let us not sign the agreement now. To handle Chinese Hagemony and Islamism, US will need India; if not now, surely 10 years later. Chinese Hagemony and Islamism will remain ever present dangers for the free world.

Nuclear Club
by shrikant hegde on Jun 04, 2007 05:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Why US is not considering moving other members of the nuclear club in conceding that India is virtually there with them and should be treated nearly as such. This should allow US to mend its laws to treat India differently. In such a case the 123 agreement will sail through easily.

N-Deal with US
by keshav kumar on Jun 04, 2007 05:28 PM  Permalink

Only a few days back China showed its sharp teeth to India saying that N.East India is part of China.
This danger is going get more dangerous in years to come. For India to maintain safety,it is utmost necessary to enhance its Nuclear bomb making and enlarging defence capability. This deal as is being reported in the press is then not useful to India. Our PM is a history ignorant person and he does not understand the dangers that lie ahead for India's posterity.
Any deal that shackles India's defence capability will be a serious danger to our safety and hence must not be signed.

Poor article
by biz Narayan on Jun 04, 2007 05:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

For this sort of articles,we need to understand who is paying TP Sreenivasan to stay in USA. Sometimes these people are wealthy, sometimes they are with lobbying agencies. Disclosure of Sreenivasan is a must. If he still is a leftist Neheruvian should be mentioned.

The certainity and accusation in his tone means something is wrong, this guy wants to buldoge, and I wouldn't think Sreenivasan can throw away his personal oppurtinities for national intrest. The article by scintists had valid issues, which could have been answered directly.
