To all the cynics
by Nikhil P on Feb 05, 2007 10:06 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This story is quite opposite of the story about some actors' birthdays.

This story inspires many people, especially women. So no need to be cynic about this story.

i am guessing lot of people are proud of the achievement itself, but do we have to hype too much about Sunita having Indian roots?

You have dreams , self confident, as well as money , thats why it becomes possible.
We also have dreams to do something differnet which becomes memorable to all over the world, and also have self confident, but we dont have money, so we have to work hard. You know it's my plus point.

Sunita herself identifies herself as an Indian-American. So you would be racist if you denied her from that.

It's not racism to take inspiration from someone successful in your race. Look at the definition of the word "racism" in your dictionary. Also Sunita is biracial. So even using your own logic, its not racism in being proud of her achievements.

You want to be proud of AB,srk, salman. Good luck to you. I like to get inspiration from people like Sunita. That's my choice.

You don't need money to do something different. Gandhi did not have money. You can take a lesson from Gandhiji if you want to start doing something about the world without money.

Also it takes talent and hard work to be chosen to work at the space station.

stop this stupidity of calling her indian. she has done a gr8 job, but still there is a limit to which we can celebrate it. why should we be so proud of here. she doesn't even claim herself to be indian and she need not do that as well. its high time we stop behaving as inferior beings!!

Space Walk
by Subramanian K on Feb 05, 2007 09:34 AM  Permalink

There is n reason to be country specific. All these experiments and trials are being conducted for the welfare and betterment of the entire human race.

Defimitely the efforts are to be lauded and complemented without being country specific.

Let us all pray for the well being and safety of the astronauts in the space whether they are Indians, Americans, Russians, French, German, African, Austalian, New Zealander, Pakistiani, Bangladeshi, SriLankan, Korean, Chinese, Japanese.............etc

Indian-American ?
by viney yadav on Feb 05, 2007 09:19 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

How come she is an Indian-American astronaut? She is not born in India. She did not study in India. She is not working for India. The work/research she is doing is no way going to help India. Its not funded by Indian government. Officially, it has nothing to do with India. She may be a lady with roots in India but she is just American astronaut.

Also, are we supposed to celebrate the news? Just because her parents used to be Indian who are well settled abroad and have no plans of coming back also?

OK, you can say I am narrow-minded. I should think about the world as a family. In that case, she was not alone there. Just say that NASA's astronauts did so and so.

Comon forget the media, people read and see those subjects which appeal to them and media is not successful in selling any news. She may not be Indian Citizen but is an Indian-American for sure which the American media states her to be. And finally her family in Mehesana is Indian Citizen. We must be proud of her.

She is Indian-American. You can't deny that. Just as blacks here are African-American eventhough their ancestors came to the US centuries ago, Americans with their roots in India are Indian-Amricans. If you don't want to be proud of her success, that's your choice. I don't have any problem with that. Also a correction that only her father is from India, her mother is American.
