India is a democracy, because no authoritarian system can ever govern a country of such cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic diversity without causing enormous amount of bloodshed, unrest and fierce opposition. In democracy, the demonic elements of this diverse society have found a golden mean of sorts, ensuring their fiefdoms, empowering them to fleece the masses and amass unprecented wealth. Although, all this sounds very depressing, it is the truth. To say India is a democracy, is only technically correct. The true tenets of democracy - Goverment of the people, by the people and for the people - are conspicuous by their stark absence. The intelligensia is kept at bay by the rogue elements who play the mock game of elections only to send one more batch of looters to preside over Public treasury and make hay while sun shines. If a model form of governance is a utopian dream, then Deomcracy in India will rank as worse than a nightmare.
Here in india you will find lots of people believes that they are the outsiders and not indian. They feels that they have relationship with some remote countries in other part of asia. Some feels that they have came from some western countries.
We have seen so many time that when outside these people get screwed out by foreign coutnries no asian country or western country came to save them.

I suppose what Dr. Diamond has found has lot of truth in it. Although we can take pride as biggest democracy, that only good as the numbers. Because of the large population we have quite few achievements. However the moment we look at the political system (set aside pur preferred party), we can see and sence huge black hole which goes no where. Time and again we Indians have been utilized by political parties only to gain votes, Congress play many cards like minority, BJP does the opposite and projects itself as the voice for hindus (only few mobilised ppl). It is indeed miracle that we are survivin with such huge internal, dangerous issues. From the time BJP stood up, we have only seen religion-oriented elections and governments. These parties (Modi & oths) have successfully mobilised the common, urban hindus. They do these by using the emotional and very personal issue called religion, they show that hindus are suffering and its time for it to change, so vote them. They would go to any length to project themselves as saviors of hindus and have created many riots just to win the large hindu vote bank. You see or hear them all they do is present wrong & manipulated info again & again to common ppl and make it look like TRUTH. They arouse emotional, passionate feelings, like Modi relates everything to Gujrati ppl's respect and pride. That way he and ppl like him have ruled states. How can we ever feel safe and good for India with so much of violence, discriminatin, corruption

India is the only large united peaceful land in a sea of Iskamic turmoil stretching from Morroco to Indonesia/Malaysia. It is the only Hindu land which is in between the Al Qaeda's vision of an Islamic Caliphate running from Morroco to Indonesia/Malaysia.

Cricket it's a bad example. First of all there is no such thing like playing for India. They are representing a board of cricket,which is a body in India. Ontop,even I knew the muslim supporters who namaz'd for Pakstani Opening batsmen when he broke world record by scoring 194. This is not sense of nationality,but religous'm. A dangerous attribute. I see Indian muslim and christians as Indian's and Muslim fro m Pakistani as Pakistani and not muslim.

...except one: that the continuance of democracy in India is dependent on deomcracy flourishing in the neighbourhood too. After all, India has been the only reasonably true democracy in this region for over six decades now.
After emerging from mediaevalism, India is perhaps one of the few inherently democratic countries in the world, owing to the freedom to question guaranteed to every individual historically in this land. I'm not saying we were had guaranteed perfect equality and freedom in the past, but, as Vivekananda said, with all our faults, we were head and shoulders above any other country in that regard.
..america is the godfather of all the dictators in the world...and now this guy from stanford comes over and preaches us about democracy....Dr Diamond why dont and give a lecture on democracy to the monkey and human form Bush??

To talk about 'GOD' you don't have to be god. If you are belive in God that's enough. So may be he believes in democracy.
Indian democracy is seen as a miracle as it is still existing! However, one should not forget that the Indian democracy is actually weakening day by day and the deterioration rate is increasing year after year.
Indian democracy instead of strengthening since Nehrus times when India was economically very weak, has in fact deteriorated decade after decade despite improving economically! Actually, with increasing economic development one expects increasing strength of democratic institutions and there by their representatives.
One is expected to see more educated and more responsible people being elected to the Parliament. But in the lower house it is the least educated and even convicted criminals with several others with many criminal charges against them (most of them are not politically motivated)are being elected to the Lok Sabha. Rajya Sabha was actually meant for intellectutals who might not have public support and hence could not get elected to the Lok Sabha on their own. They were meant to check the Lok Sabha who sometimes are tempted to go with populist yet undesirable legislations. But what is happening? Rajya Sabha has become a recluse who were defeated in Lok Sabha elections Eg.Shivraj Patil. And it became a place for those young children of the major political leaders; Eg. Supriya Pawar,(SharadPawars daugther) KaniMozhi (Karunanidhis daughter. WHat kind of intellectuals are these?
