US still doesn't get it
by Arman on Apr 19, 2007 09:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

US thinks that they can deceive their way through the weak UPA government run by saint like Mr. Manmohan Singh. If they do succeeed in somehow getting this deal down India's throat, I am afraid that this will sow the seeds of greater suspicion than when US sent 7th fleet to Bay of Bengal in 1971. Indians have long memories.

You should go back 9 years to 1962 for longer memories. When China attacked India in 1962, our leaders appeal to the Soviet Union for help was turned down. The Soviet leaders said that they cannot turn against their brother (China) to help their friend (India). When our jawans were dying in the Himalayas (with no woollen clothes or weaponry -- thanks to Krishna Menon and Nehru), it was President Kennedy who not only sent us planes and supplies but also warned Pakistan not to take advantage of our vulnerability. Castigating the U.S for everything is very brave and politically correct, but let us not be ingrates>

Lets not get started on how US has undermined India in the last 30 yrs. Remember Pakistan has been their key ally and nothing seems to have cahnged. Had it not been for US collusion with Pakistan, India and not China would be the number one economy in Asia. India haters still dominate US policy making.

well, 1962 debacle was all creation of Nehru and his inability to deal with China before that. He totally ignored all indications given by China right from 1959 agression and annihilation of Tibet.

Personal attack
by Arman on Apr 19, 2007 08:56 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

US is using the familiar technique and resorting to personal attack and threats

"I am not saying that Kakodkar isn't sort of tainted himself. Obviously, he's partisan and has to look after the interests of the scientific establishment"..

What do they mean by Mr Kakodkar has tained himself? And he is looking after India's interest not scientific community's interests. This is when the treaty had not even been signed. Imagine what would these guts do when thay have cameras at every nuclear plant.

Yes Sir. You observed well US strategy to personally attack. They invite him to US for discussion, but will pressure him and use psychological attacking and aggression to hurt him and his person, leaving him unable to defend Indian interests properly. Nobody can put limit on Indian rights for reprocessing, it is not just. It is clearly trying to subordinate India and trying to weaken India in general. This is the typical US approach, it is the aggressive junglee America not willing to be civilised until something stronger forces them to be. They are challenging India, not co-operating it seems.

Kakodkar is a true Indian patriot. He will not allow these puppet UPA ministers to push India down the gutter. How I wish BJP was in power. We need nationalists for these kind of deals.

See how your beloved Defence Minister Jaswant Singh , accompained the Terrorist to Kandhar, Afganishthan ??
I dont think any political party or Leader of now a days is Patriot at all , gone are the days of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose or Lal Bhadaur Shastri . Now everyone is working for self interest , even the general public like you & me.

But i can definetly tell you BJP will protect the interests of India better than Congress in the international arena.
You cannot take Kandahar as an example because we cannot allow the life's of 100's of Indians to go waste. And also remember the stink the relatives of the passengers created.Especially that doctor guy.

All Support for Kakodkar
by Rahul on Apr 19, 2007 08:53 PM  Permalink

Kakodkar sure does have a relevant point. I hope he is able to convince the US counterpart. We must watch out for our interest first, it doesn't matter then whether we make the deal with Russia or US. US is trying to protect it's own interest, India should do the same.

US congress and the deal
by Arman on Apr 19, 2007 08:46 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Lets read these two paragraphs

"While India has been demanding that the reprocessing fuel provision in the agreement be done away with, one member, who has held long meetings with Kakodkar, said the provision is not one that US Congress would be willing to do away with because "there is deep scepticism on Capitol Hill that if this is done, it would allow India to take advantage of the nuclear fuel it would obtain from the US to build up its strategic resources (read nuclear weapons arsenal)."

This only shows that US congress is still fixated on this issue of nuclear arsenal while claiming that this deal was not about India's arsenal.

Whereas for Mr Kakodkar,

"But there is no question that if you expect that you are going to have this surge in indigenous Indian nuclear plants, that there are going to require cheap fuel %uFFFD and that goes to the heart of reprocessing, and it has nothing to do with building up a strategic arsenal and that's what he [Kakodkar] was telling us %uFFFD that India has plenty enough fuel and material right now if they wanted to go on building up a bigger nuclear arsenal."

However, if such is the case, why would US insist that India cannot reprocess fuel. Well, not being a scientist, it is my guess that Mr. Kakodkar suspects that this deal would make India dip into its saved strategic arsenal ( read bombs ) once US starts playing games with the provisions and second, India would not be able to develop its own nuclear plants as there would be no fuel for such plants and thus will be dependent on the US mercy for ever.
It is better to dump the deal rather than become a pawn.

I'd like to point out that "gorilla in the room" is a figure of speech. It means a roadblock or obvious problem that everybody is pretending not to notice. Its misused here in my opinion.
They are not calling the guy a gorilla actually.

A "600 pound gorilla" in american means what we call in India as a "heavy weight"...someone who can change the course of any thing being dealt with.
A "white elephant in the room" is a problem that you cannot but notice.
I don't believe the americans are disrespecting him.

But they do resort to disrespect when they say that Mr. Kakodkar has tained himself. Has Mr Burns tainted himself for standing up for what is good for US? Such personal attacks have become US trade mark in diplomacy. India should pull out of the deal if such behavior continues.
