ISI Spies: There is nothing new for India
by TV Kumar on Nov 02, 2006 01:44 PM  Permalink

Excellent piece by a veteran Intelligence officer but may I add that any infilteration has to be countered. Spying 'business' has been in operation for centuries - right from the days of legendry CHANAKYA. Point to be kept in mind is for the Indian agencies to keep a tab, track and utmost vigilance be it the Armed forces, Para Military outfits, or for that matter for RAW and I.B. There have been numerous cases of defections amongst indian officials including at time srnior level officers.

Commies as Hindus
by Swaminathan on Oct 27, 2006 01:51 AM  Permalink

"That is why, more often than not, the ISI moles in the armed forces and other government departments detected by the IB, which is responsible for counter-intelligence, and arrested by the police are generally Hindus. This is so in respect of the present arrests also."

I agree that there are bad apples in Hindu community also. However one thing to inquire and find out is, if Hindu named individuals are really practising Hindus -- remember we have so many communists who will sell the country for a buck, all are "Hindus"!! Also do not forget converts!

Simple IT Security Measures
by Patriot on Oct 27, 2006 12:52 AM  Permalink

Disconnecting the USB and remnoving any and all recording devices such as diskette drives and CD-RW or DVD-RW drives on ALL or most computers is a simple preventive measure. Similarly, the data should be on the network, with no local hard drive whenever possible (diskless work-stations). For mail servers, only IMAP with encryption and no POP should be allowed. By disconnecting / eliminating USB ports, one will have to physically tamper with the machine for the pen drives etc. to work - causing a more visible security breach that can be easily detected.

Most employees (commercial or Government)do not need these capabilities, and such a configuration should be made part of the specs for new equipment. In addition to improving security, this configuration change can reduce the cost of the equipment and the cost of maintenance / management.

One would think that Defence would have already thought through and implemented all such measures after the highly publicized CIA case, if not earlier - instead, they banned pen drives, rather than eliminating the ability of pen drives to work on computers that do not need it..

How to protect..
by Indian on Oct 26, 2006 10:24 PM  Permalink

I dont think govt of India does not know how to protect their computers from data theft.

Internet usage for each individual can be monitored, USB drivves can be blocked, CD writing can be monitored.

Indian is thriving in info technology, but as evryone knows these govt deprtments are proud of their babudom
they will never care for new technology until something serioully wrong happens with the dept or county.

Hope India wakes up soon.

Jai Hind.

RE: isi spies are not the last
by Md. Yazed Alam Khan on Nov 01, 2006 01:56 PM  Permalink
Dear Suman,

I appreciate what you have written, but don't forget that the Kashmir issue had been taken to the UN a long way back by J. L. Nehru and intentionally he turned the matter into an international issue. As the ethnic cleansing in the valley is concerned, this is the fault of our Govt. to take double standard based on ethnicity. The pundits are not at all hated by many Muslims living in the valley, but a handiwork of Pakistani terrorists to create terror and horror and ofcourse to impinge communal feelings in people's mindset. The soldiers of our army have not been glorified in a deserving manner as they ought to have got, but, after their death they are often forgotten and the bloody politicians make false peace agreements with the Pakistani rulers. It is really deplorable. This is an international collusion to hinder the development of the common people of both the countries (India & Pakistan) so to turn them away from the real problems that they are facing. This problems only can be eliminated and politicians & the rulers can be executed only when the common people will be literate.

An article on ISI by Raman
by R.Nadimuthu on Oct 26, 2006 05:24 PM  Permalink

Dear Editor,
One of the excellent articles I have read in the recent times. The biggest draw back with our educational system is that we have not imbibed enough partriotism in the mind of young ones right from their child hood.We are living in a country where the rights of the people outweigh their duties. Our politicians have failed miserably in giving a right direction to our youth on the pretext of losing vote bank politics. It is also sad to note that ours is the only country where police measures against terrorists are condemned as the gross violations of human rights.Only GOD can save our country.Regards.R.NADIMUTHU

How about CIA and others?
by H. Venkatachalam on Oct 26, 2006 04:19 PM  Permalink

ISI's penetration of our armed forces are on the rise. No doubts about it. However, it penetration is a fraction of what CIA is currently achieved in India or the erstwhile KGB had done in the 80s.

While ISI spies are regularly caught and unearthed, we had never heard of any KGB spies caught in 80s or CIA spies being caught recently.

CIA has more interests to guard than what ISI is seeking. CIA's penetration is more intensive and result oriented. However, CIA spies are never caught.

Who are the CIA's informers. They are certainly NOT the low ranking sepoys/clerks of govt departments. They are all the Ministers, bis bosses and top brass of armed forces, and many govt departments including external affairs. These bis bosses trade vital information in exchange for college admission and/or jobs for their children, spouses and relatives, green card and big investments. Sadly these are the ones who would never be caught.

Of course, we will continue to catch small time ISI spies. That is the irony of the system.

India -- a banana republic!
by Sreenivasan Raju Aiyer on Oct 26, 2006 12:46 PM  Permalink

The competition of all the political parties who see the secular hymen being punctured should they hang Mohammad Afzal, or take similar action against anti-national jihadis and traitors, for secular votes, has only pushed our country into a state of Banana Republic where to be patriotic is a disqualification. Nobody cares for nothing, and that's a tremendous qualification where you will be roped in the political parties!
