Why is the South doing well
by Amit M on Nov 22, 2006 10:01 AM  Permalink

Very interesting and well researched, but not a satisfactory answer to the title. I would say that Bangalore is doing well inspite of itself. The value proposition Bangalore offers to overseas investors is still large enough to offset the other numerous shortcomings. To say that, "Indeed, I would claim that Bangalore is giving Mumbai a run for its money as the First City", is quite a ridiculous claim. Mumbai works, at least money talks there. The local trains, even though crowded, are on time. Electricity, barring those flood times, is reliable. Shops open before 10 and stay open after 10. One does not have to miss a day of work, even to move house. The airport looks like an airport, not like a flying school hangar. It doesn't take 5 years to build one flyover. People have purpose and are on time for appointments. And just to clarify, I'm a born Bangalorean and have been for the past 27 years.

We are a great country
by R Sriram on Nov 21, 2006 10:49 PM  Permalink

After having read all the comments, many with a strong regionalist fervor I feel so much more better about being a Hindusthani. We can fight and criticize Tamilians, Biharis, Kannadigas, UP wallahs, etc. but in none of the comments could I see any pent up hatred. Some of the arguments in the comments were to prove which state is more patriotic. All this is wonderful. Let us keep this freedom alive - the freedom to love and criticize. We all know this freedom can be kept alive only as long as we all are one. Jai Hind

Why South is leading
by unus on Nov 21, 2006 12:17 PM  Permalink

The subject is informative, but the representation of muslims is wrong. The muslims were conquerers from north and from south the arabs were for trade. So, main thing I feel is the simplicity which matches and hte Arabs got mingled and I can see soft spoken muslims and highly intellectuals. The govt in South is not so communal as in North.North faced the partitioned of India and hence the disturbance. The Hindu extremist systematically diluted the muslims.Offcourse now the development is due toawakening from both muslims and Hindus which is good thing and muslims properity is due to gulf states and not due to govt agencies or muslims> muslims now they are educating their children.the result can be seen the number of profesisonal graduates out of universities and colleges. Sure the south india will bear the fruits of hardworking and accommodating nature.Yes they are intellectual and not fighters or criminals as one can find n the north. the northerns doest like southerns, htat is the fact and one can find it in every walk of life, though htis feeling is very less among muslims

Why South doing well?
by vaempuli on Nov 21, 2006 09:42 AM  Permalink

Interesting article. I do concur with the author in some of the aspects. I feel that there has been an under emphasis on the effect of foriegn invasions. We have to realise that there was a sustained effort on part of the foriegn invaders to destroy the culture and civilization of the north, the so called BiMaRu states, once shining beacons of our culture, being case in point. This manifests as the "indiscipline" we see today in these states. Many of the original ideas from north-south interaction is preserved in south. Also the south was lucky enough to be spared of the trauma of partition. Second, the proximity of the terrorist state, makes the northern part more vulnerable to terror attacks than south. The north is more threatened even today. Given these advantages, it is my humble opinion that south hasn't performed as well as it should have.

I object
by muhammad_dr@rediffmail.com on Nov 21, 2006 01:17 AM  Permalink

Sir

I object to the use of the word 'Mohammedan armies' that conquered India. It was the Mughal and Khilji dynasties who came on imperial conquests. What do you know about Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)? Please choose your words with care.

As for forcible conversions, please be aware that a heart cannot be won over to faith by force. If people were converted by force, why are their children still devout Muslims?

Otherwise a very informative article. Yes, India is indeed doing well in the world. If only we learnt to speak the truth, and corruption would vanish...

All the best
