Name Changing
by SS on Nov 02, 2006 12:03 PM  Permalink

Many here have commented that why cant we change the city name since the other states have done so. The politicians of the all states had the same agenda while doing so, and it was to shirk their responsibility of providing basic infrastructure to their region and engage the people in senseless debates and discussions over such matters. Also I find it stupid that crores of rupees will now be spent in changing the names on street boards, stationery and all other official documents. I think all of us should ask the govts. to provide us with the figures are spent on this name changing. I am sure some of you will be surprised that the same amount could be used for a new hospital/school/better roads/more hygiene.

Change of Banglore City Name ...
by Taskeen Ahmed on Nov 02, 2006 12:00 PM  Permalink

Actually it is not so unique decision to change the cities OR popular names as entire world is attracted towards the existing names & change of names will effect the pronounciation & other attractions that belongs to the perticular location.

Regards

Taskeen Ahmed

by padmasekar on Nov 02, 2006 11:59 AM  Permalink

YES 2 politicians.
NO 2 US.
BOMBAY -> MUMBAI [now no shangai]
BANGALORE -> Bangalooru [is no where]
will help CM to divert the dicusions from infrastructure to some useless stuff.

IF they want kannda to be powerful, there are other ways to do it, ask japanese, chinese.

Bengalooru is a assertion of Kannada identity
by Chintu on Nov 02, 2006 11:57 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I support the renaming of Bangalore to Bengalooru. Bengalooru is in sync with the Kannada culture and is supported by a majority of Kannadigas. Its a symbol of the reawakening of Kannada language, culture & identity which of late has been under attack from the recent outsiders who refuse to be sensitive to the local sentiments unlike the older non-kannadiga bangaloreans. The usage of the new name will take some time to percolate but it will; given sufficient time as the experience of Chennai/Mumbai/Kolkota shows.

Kannadigas and Kannada have been taken for granted by other Indians and especially the Indian English media. Corporates and other Indians may not agree with this but we are not asking for their approval. Its the right of the Kannada people and their representative government to rename Bangalore. If non-Kannadiga bangaloreans do not like what this, they are free to leave from whence they came. Bengalooru may lose out on some corporate investments but thats ok, money isnt everything in the world...culture has a more prominent place in the hearts of Kannadigas.

chintu??? I don`t think is a cultural usage of Kannada. Your name is probably chintaligamppa narsimha ponnuswamy gowda or some such name. why use chintu???? I can`t distinguish a kannada name from a telugu name or even a hindi name example vivek. Surely in my great grandfather's time you could look at a name and tell where the person hailed from. So why don`t you enforce it now??? ofcourse u might argue a persons name and city's name are two different things, but my argument is that the person`s name is much more important and you can see a person`s name is losing identity of his origin whereas you want the city's name to change to stick to kannada roots? why???? if you really want to then ensure that everyone uses their kannada name instead.

Change the Roads
by Rahul on Nov 02, 2006 11:56 AM  Permalink

I think the Govt should change the Roads and other infrastructure to get the votes rather than changing the name of the city.

Or even better send all the people in the Govt to school so that they get some education ! :)

A decision forced by some jokers who's contribution to Bangalore or for that matter Karnataka is absolutely ridiculous..what a loss of brand name..now that we have lost 'Bangalore', just watch the Chinese who's expertise lies in duplicating some of the best known brands in the world, come out with a high - tech city and name it 'Bangalore' to capture the world's imagination..

Renaming Bangalore is plain stupid!!!!!
by adi on Nov 02, 2006 11:51 AM  Permalink

Bangalore is more than a city, it represents the spirit of enterprise of a bouyant nation. Bangalore has become a trademark of Indian proficiency in software and IT. Some politicians are trying to capture a vote bank by fanning chauvist fire. But it will not work in a city where only 1 person out of 3 is a kannadiga!!!!

Renaming the Cities??
by V.Saravnan on Nov 02, 2006 11:49 AM  Permalink

I think it is foolish to rename the cities. It is purely political and nothing to do with public opinion. There is lot more to be done like improving the infrastructure and facilities for the public. I feel that if some renaming to be done, it should have been done long before (ie. immediately after Independence). Renaming the cities now and then shows the lack of vision of our leaders!
