You are kind to have left a few more obvious ones: 1. How about paying a utility bill? 2. How about trying to meet a legislator or official? 3. How about get your tax refund? 4. How about hospitalization? 5. How about public urination? 6. How about trying to confirm your air line ticket? 7. How about travelling in a bus? 8. How about getting school admission for kid? 9. How about paying college fee? 10.How about getting cash from bank from your own ac. 11.How about loud speaker religous proclamations? 12.How about spitting on the street or from a bus? 13.How about eve teasing? 14.How about traffic blocakde for politicians? 15.How about the police for only politicians? Well I can continue-but I agree India is beautiful. I am glad it is not Pakistan.

Have you or any of your family members EVER paid a bribe to get what you want? Have you or any of your family members EVER littered on the streets? I can go on with questions like this. If you or your family have done any of the "corrupt" things mentioned in any of the responses then you are liable too. You have attribuited to the growth of the monster. Before you point to the flaws of others; please make sure that your hands were and are clean. As for calling India a "shit hole" - you (since you have named your self a Patriotic Indian)and your ancestors came from this so called "shit hole".
Many people will criticize this article saying that eyes with western glasses are always crooked, nad they look down upon India, but this is really a good way to look at our problems. Now, instead of criticizing the criticizers we should work towards betterment of India.
Regardinng the map issue in Arunachal Pradesh, altogether Govt. have showed step motherly treatment toward NE portion of India. Ther has been no solid on ground efforts to increase accessibility in NE areas and thereby increasing development. The other problems are mostly a result of that.
Alright there are a couple of things that are wrong with India- but can the columnist point out one nation which is perfect? He complains abt people taking leave for a variety of reasons- hey, thts our culture. Aren't the French known for taking 6 weeks off every year.Maybe he is unaware of Corinne Maier's Book on France titled "Bonjour laziness". While I dont condone the discriminatory prices that foreign tourists are charged, give me one example of a foreign country where there exists no racism.I speak from personal experience.
For instance I can complain of officials at Paris airport pretending not to understand any English and as for their rudeness, the less said the better!( Did they say Mumbai is supposedly the rudest city in the world, ha!!ha!!) Its very easy to criticize another culture and another country, but before doing so, better take a hard look at your own country.
I think its time we Indians stopped belittling our own country, took more pride in what we have, improve what we dont have and put a stop to outsiders criticizing our country, our idiosyncrasies and our culture.
It is not racial discrimination. If you look at it the other way. We have a rate of say R750 (approx $20) for a foreigner but a poor Indian guy (and there are plenty of poor Indians still) who visits the taj mahal shouldn't have to pay the same to visit a monument in his own country. Don't you think this is fair? Indians who are not citizens also pay the tourist rate so it is not racism. Maybe they are able to pass themselves off as citizens easily but that is a matter of lack of enforcement not racism.
Hi! I've had this idea for a while... it addresses the issues corruption and traffic lawlessness. Personaly, I believe that the Fines should be 10 times the amount they currently are. Rs. 100 for parking in a No Parking zone is trivial. Also, the cop will take Rs. 50 from you, so it's effectively Rs. 50. And the government doesn't see a dime.
So here's what you do... all fines are increased by a factor of 10 to 20. Rs. 2000 being the minimal fine. Whatever the fine, the cop making the arrest gets 50% and 50% goes to the government. If you cannot pay the fine, then your vehicle is confiscated. If the fine is not paid withing 3 days, it is doubled. If not paid within a week, your vehicle is auctioned away.
Claude Arpi: Re: Discrimination - You are touting France as a civilized nation. What was the reason of 2005 fall riots? Was it because France is not racially biased? You can blame the immigrants. But where did the first generation of the immigrants come from? Were they not brought in from the colonies as guest workers to supply the needs of the booming French economy? Re: Photographs - Yes, the Indian government restricts photographs of the sites and artifacts which are under the Archeological Survey of India. Indian history shows how our artifacts have been stolen by the so called "Civilized" nations. We find our artifacts in museums of the civilized nations with notifications that they were bought from Indian Rajah's and Maharajah's; but who can collaborate? Documents can be made up after the item was stolen. Coercion was also a technique used by the "civilized" occupiers. You mentioned Indians happily clicking away at statues, paintings, art artifacts at Louvre museum. These items are in a museum and not at an archeological dig site. There are many things that I would like to point out; but unfortunely Rediff does not provide enough room to do so. However, I would say the same thing to you that many of us immigrants hear in the "civilized" nations; "If you don't like my country GO BACK."
Hi Claude, I read your article, and i agree that whatever you said, was more than 100% correct. Infact, probably you could have even used a stronger language and yet understated these issues... Probably you could have included the "lack of politeness" in the fast growing cities, or metros, as they are called... To be honest, we ourself feel that pinch in our skin, again, as you correctly pointed out, after a visit from abroad. The difference is so stark!!!!.. Anyway, the less said the better. So as a proud Indian, I can only apologise to all the visitors and guests who come to my home, and assure you, that some of us, or probably a lot of us, are trying in our individual capacity to make things better. Hopefully enough, some day, this will culminate in a collective effort and show some better results. I hope to read another article mentioning the "Improvements in the 10 most hateable areas in India" or some such heading.
And hopefully, it wont take another 30 years for that article to come out.
Its easy to point the 10 things, but tell me which country in your opinion does not have something bad??????????
Is there no discrimination against Indians in other parts of what you called devloped world.
There are many places where there are no photographs allowed.
POliticians in all parts of world are same.
Corruption is out there in open in India, but in the devloped world you dont see it????????????????????????????????????????????
If these things make hate out Motherland then you have no RIGHT TO COMMENT ON GREAT LAND LIKE INDIA.
If you cannot be proud of where you are staying why dont you go back to your place where you will have just love to speak of.
I am even ashamed that you advised someone to write a chapter highlighting BAD INDIA.
Where in world will you find so much Love , affection and respect. its only in India I have heard " Athithi Devo Bhavo"
So Mr. get things straight before writing anything derogatory for my motherland. Because you did not struggle for our Independence. First get your facts straight before wiritng. Once again if you hate India so much go find your self a place where you can find everything you want Jai Hind

I salute you for your comments. I mean this is our country and we live as we wish. No one comments about what we do. If we have social evils, they are OUR evils and WE will deal with them. There is no need for anyone to comment on them. I may feel that wiping ones ass with paper rather than washing is filthy but then I dont comment on it.

No need to be so much emotional! Please look at the truth in it. I accept that all the countries has problems. Look at the way he has mentioned... India is 95% good except some aspects. Please open your mind(eyes too) and look at it! Let me tell you a simple thing - Every country has corruption and every country has corrupt polititions, babus and officials. But they are corrupt to a certain limit - they take bribes to do a favor against law. You can see only in India officials taking bribes just to do their daily duty. Shame! A shameless dad tells in front of his son that his "daily collection" goes as his only son's pocket money - Only in India.
