Lessons learnt
by dinesh on Jul 04, 2006 04:45 PM  Permalink

Last year the municipal commissioner said that they have learnt lessons from the severe flooding. They surely have. In the name of disaster management, they have spent (read: earned) crores of rupees. The citizens remain helpless as usual.

Blame Game
by roshan on Jul 04, 2006 04:23 PM  Permalink

It is so easy for all of us to simply blame the beaureaucrats. We too contribute to the problem, by throwing waste into the drains, thereby choking them. The tides too have to be kept in mind, as Mumbai is bang on the sea coast. Further, Mumbai has too large a population, living in too small an area. In such dense living conditions, many of them in low lying areas, it is impossible for any administration to take measures in all cases. Take the case of what happened in USA during the storms in 2005!! We all must ensure Mumbai is kept clean, and the drains are clear. Any volunteers to clear the drains?

The B.M.C.had promise to take mumbai out of these problems viz. waterlogging, clogging of drainage systems, bad roads etc. But sir, history has repeated itself. I live in Colaba am a college student and my younger brother is in IX std of S.S.C.board, so I would like to ask you whether schools and colleges will be closed tomorrow also? sir please reply soon.

Sloppy reporting
by L Subramanyan on Jul 04, 2006 04:00 PM  Permalink

Very sloppy reporting. Is it yesterday, today, tomorrow? You say the airport is closed down since '1600', and it is 1542 now? You say high tides are expected at 1727, but forget to mention that the max height is only 4.5 mtrs ( a fact that you can check very easily form Google). Schools closed when, today or tomorrow...

However, it will achieve the one objective it is intended to -- to create panic amongst its readers..

Like I said before, very sloppy reporting indeed

Arrest them!
by avbm on Jul 04, 2006 03:28 PM  Permalink

Unless those who are responsible for this state of affairs are not held accountable, this problem will keep recurring. Arrest them!

For instance, evey year Milan and Khar subways are flooded but nothing is done to remove illegal encroachments and fix them. In Andheri, no attempt is made to clear illegal encroachments and hawkers. Why are new settlements allowed to come up without infrastuctural support?
