You are absolutely correct Mr.Rajat Narang. I personally believe that India should declare itself as an autocratic country, because the adoption of quota will remove secularism and democratic system for which India is proud on and famous through out the world. I see lot of problems in the long run with the quota system. Perhaps, distance between different cast will increase.
I would like to thank our weakest Prime Minister Mr. Singh and also to the congress party for the way he has created this issue. Our dear government is playing this card to win next ballot. Its really pity and unfortunate that they chose this way.
Its a great article. Unfortunately, nobody will seriously consider the argument. Actually it is a time start a movement to remove all these obstacles from this democratic country. Strongly I recommend those peoples who believe in total democracy and impartiality in this country, to start a strict movement to remove this unfortunate part from constitution. I will join you.
Dont blame politics. Reservation is in our minds.Even in an event as trivial as a tv song contest people of a particular state pitched in to ensure victory for a local participant and that too sadly backed up by free telephone booths set up by a leading industrialist. Why? The other candidates were equal if not better but were denied a fair chance due to this groupism. A look at the roster of all leading companies will prove that there is a preference for employment of particular caste group and region of people over equally qualified or better candidates otherwise. And coming down to our own individual behaviour on any particular day. Just keep an informal record and you will notice that most of our actions are showing a preference to deal with a person of a particular community from amongst the many options even at the cost of getting a substandard product or service. I believe that if everyone of us behaves in a totally just and fair way in every action that we do irrespective of caste colour religion region then the walls of reservation will crumble by itself. The strength of any community is how effectively it brings up others to its level and not how strongly it crushes them
I believe that the impulse to have reservation is the same as the need for smaller states: to find a voice for those who don't.
There were representations made to the British by the SC/ST and Muslims to have proportional representation in our legislatures but the Congress turned it down as unacceptable since it would end up dividing the society along caste and communal lines.
But the demands of a long suppressed mass of people had to find a voice and reservation has assumed a logic that cannot be reversed.
The need for all political parties to back quota and reservation is the only single point to stay in power. No other programme is capable of generating the kind of consensus as caste and religion, and nothing is as important today.Even the threat to the country, pales into insignificance.
It is only a matter of time when the society will split into a number of countless castes, all living with each other in uneasy peace.
It is well that the country introduce proportional representation in the legislatures to cap this relentless Balkanisation.
First of all the article is seriously biased and unilateral. How can you expect a backward class person to compete with a person who has solid background be it societal, financial, castewise. One should remember in Indian context merit is also a reservation, for the fact that the merit for certain classes is backed by hundreds of years of societal support. The great Indian mindset is always inherently biased as far as the caste is concerned.
Now India is growing economically at rapid speed. But China is in the race. To compete with China like countries we must think something more than reservations. If we are hanging to reservation definitely we will loose the race. Our politicians must realise this. Even Dr.Ambedkar himself felt that after 15 years of Independence, reservation is not required for SC/ST.It is high time that governement forgat about their vote bank politics and concentrate on development issues.
Reservation quota has to be completely removed if India has to become superpower
Well said Narang Bhai. I just would like to see retirement age fixed for politicians and also minimum qualifications. Before the parties give tickets they should do an internal election based on educational qualifications and select the best guy to contest.
I understand author's frustation. Even I will like to have reservation free system. But its possible only when all in society are treated same irrespective of their caste &sex.Everyone shud get equal opportunities to succeed. Even in USA this is not happened.Thats why they introduced affirmative action for Black people.
I agree with Author that this is a plot of political parties to get votes. But there is no other solution to improve the conditions of backward class people. You must be writing this article sitting in some city. But have you gone to any villages to see their misery. You said goverment has to work on grass root level to improve primary education. But goverment itself is madeup of upper class people.I will give a good example for this. In maharshta goverment , SC/ST posts are not getting filled purposely.Because if they remain vacant for 1-2 years they can filled by temporary upper cast candidates. Results of reservation will take atleast 2-3 generation to show the result. Its hardly two generations after Independence.I think best way to end reservation is throw yout caste. Then we will create castless and hence Reservation less system.
I fully agree with the statement made by Shri Rajat Narang works for rediff.com in Mumbai. This is really the true story. The politicians will never agree for reservation of Ministreal positions. They have also not agreed for reservation of seats for women in the parliament/ Assenblies. No political party is opposing the reservation bill for the fair of vote bank loss. They are only interested to be in power, it does not matter what happens to the coutry. The BJP has failed sordidly to play its role as the main Opposition Party and CPI(M)& CPI have forgotten their ideology.
In this context I remember the great comment made by the reknowned Constitutional expert and statesman Sh. Nani Palkiwala that,
'In India people are not born with a head on the shoulder but with a title (caste, religion, etc.)on the shoulder.'
