Right to information act is just another right. It may not bring great change to the way the corruption happens. Yes, one gets to know the how the public money is spent and it stops there.
We have seen many allegations against many politians (all the scams). All are back ruling again. Money eaten is eaten we cant get back single paisa to the government account. For example Volkswagon scam..is there any accountability for all this..who will question..even if someone questions..he/she will have to face the brutality of the politicians.
Yes, media may benefit as it will get chunks of data to publish and report..but it will be just an information, that such and such thing has happened and it will continue to happen differently or same way at some part of India.. and we will be bombarded with more such news items..good for media and journalism..if only it cares for the good of a common man..
This act has come to solve the corruption problem..may be a step towards it..let us wait and see how this will benefit the society at large.
The much touted RTI Act is another chapter in political hypocracy of India like the similar or even more touted Lok Ayukta and Lok Pal Acts We are seeing for the last so many decades the drama of Lok Aukta and Lok Pals being played with the nation and net result of bringing transparency and accountabilty to the system is zero. Worse will the plight of RTI The begining itself exposes the hollowness of system. It is everybody's knowledge that bureaucratic red tapism is the cause of all ills and ironically from bottom to top public information officers and commissioners have been appointed post haste from among them only So what do you expect? This Act will create a new queer empowered class among the journalists who will increase their black mailing power to extort money from public and piblic servants and ultimately the burden of corruption will increase on common man If the powers that be are genuinely concerned then they should withdraw henceforth this politically motivated drama and reconstitute the system of right to information in a meaningful manner, it should be clear to them that this drama is not going to fetch even a single vote for them so come out of dirty politics.

I thank rediff.com for putting such an informative article on "right to info". I appreciate the article for giving the advantages of having right to info. Thank you. Srinivas.
I wonder if the Information Act can be helpful in providing answers to such questions. And wonder what the 'unofficial' cost for this information will be?
1. Recently, the BMC Civic chief was reported to have been on an overseas trip. I wonder, at a time when Mumbai needs every single paisa to build it's infrastructure, what was the purpose of BMC chief's overseas visit? What was achieved and what is the follow-up plan? What was the cost of it? Was it to get an 'aerial view' of the Mumbai roads on take-off and landing? Guess what, in that case, it is not surprising that the BMC feels that the roads are in good shape!
2. What ever happened to the CBI inquiry into Builders-authorities nexus in Delhi about a month or two back?
3. What are the fines for various traffic violations? I am sure that most of the times people end up paying more 'bakshish' than the official fine!
4. What 'concrete' steps have been taken to check milk adulteration in Mumbai?
5. What was the basis/data/finding on which the original plastic ban order issued in July/August this year? Was it just an ill-informed bureaucracy? If yes, then what sort of information can we expect coming from them?
As of this moment, Mr. Wajahat Habibullah has not yet taken charge/start operationg as Central Chief Information Commissioner (CCIC)though the RTI has become active since Oct. 12, 2005. Second, as per the RTI, all the preparations at all levels (state and central) like identication of Public Information Officers (PIOs), Suo-motu declarations, rules and procedures etc., should have been completed within "100" day of promolgamation of RTI (RTI became legisation from 15th June 2005). Though the dead line has crossed, many state and several central establishments/ministries/depts. are yet to comply with the provisions of RTI. We cannot make an appeal to the CCIC for the delays since he himself is yet to take charge of the office. poor people are left "orphaned" at the whims of "Babus" of the Govt. When will this be corrected ? What are the penalties for the delays ? Who is going to impose these and administer these penalties ??? GOD SAVE RTI and INDIAN Public
This is really good move by the Gov, this will put crab on the corrupt officals and infomation about the right in a Democratic indian will flow to all level of people.
Under my fundamental right "Right to information" Will the Employee Provident Fund Organisation office at Noida, U.P. will tell me about why is the delay in the transfer of my EPF accumulations from Noida to Mumbai even after a reminder. Its been more than a year now.
