Chennai is the city of hypocrisy. Filled with multiple marriages.People marrige with their sister i.e. their uncles(mother's brother) daughter. People have double standards. People who follows Osho's principles of free sex at camps.....but all hiddenly. Talks abt culture...quite strange.
Greetings Shobha. Yes.. It is Chennai and it is 2005. But, it doesn't mean that because it is modern era, we have to adopt the western culture & life style.
Would do you write such an article and stay cool if it were your teenage daughter kissing an unknown guy (she calls her boyfriend)?
There is nothing wrong in getting a little close with that special person and enjoying the togetherness without getting physical. But, it has to be only part of a committed relationship..the one that is committed for life! Simply because, we Indians.. all of us.. strongly believe that there are some special things that you save in life meant ONLY for that one special person and not for any one else. On the other hand, if some one believes that those special things can be shared with more than one person, then he/she is choosing to live like animals or like a whore. If you put yourself in those shoes and imagine you are confronted with such situation with your special person - you would understand.
In Tamil culture, we have a word 'Karpu' that aptly describes this core value. And, do you know how much it means to us..we value it even more than our own life. So, big brother is mostly right.
Thank you, Shobha Warrier, for your article - the Tamil Muttawa/Taliban are definitely out in force and wonder of wonders, all of thye state's political parties are behind them. I am personally waiting for the day some thug in uniform dares to arrest an American employee at one of the MNCs in Chennai to let the powers that be understand that investment could flow out of the place as easilya s it came in.
If the world decided to boycott the Taliban, it surely is not going to condone the Tamil Muttawa.
I like to ask u question abt scene 4. Kushboo, the actress, said that the educated man should NOT expect his wife to be virgin at the time of marriage. Also, if the wife had SAFE sex before marriage...then it's very fine and good.
I don't know how many EDUCATED MAN in India can take a girl, who had SAFE sex before marriage, as wife.
I hope, the author is also an educated man!!! I'm not sure whether he will be Ok to have a wife like that OR take a broomstick to the actress house!!!
Hello Iam Abhishek. Iam not from Chennai. Iam from Trivandrum. I read the entire column. It's just absolute nonsense. Well it can be understood if it is said that a boy and a girl should not hold hands or kiss in public. But it makes absolutely no sense if the same is applied for a husband and wife especially in a hotel or any such place. Of course I respect Indian culture. But I would be glad if you can bring to me any evidence which prohibits such things especially between a husband and wife. Nowadays people have even begun looking at the concept of boyfriend-girlfriend as acceptable. As long as the relation is confined to just a true friendship and love, everyone seems to accept it. Even I believe in a relationship that is bound by true love and friendship. These are moral values and you guys and the so called Big Brother has to accept it. You cannot still live in the 15th century when we are approaching the 21st century. What I have to say is that everyone should accept nice relationships. A marriage especially is one of the best relationships. Our culture asserts that fact more than others. So stop intererfering in the life of couples or people who truly like each other.
ANyways ..What she has written - There is some truth in that ..but consider this
1.The Big Brother never disturbs any body in marina beach of Besant Nagar Beach .There wer lot of incidents involving porsititues in Park ,Beach etc ..which made them to disturb any lonely couples in park or beach .Reckless couples inspite of warning from police that its not safe for them to be there at \'that \' hour ,come and land up in trouble .
2.regarding college dress code - Its just over exaggerated .People are raising hue and cry over this - as though dress code robs their life .Its surprising that no body cares about the sorry state of affairs of quality of education in Anna University ,both VC and students .I have never students protesting for good education and better professors !!!
3.Yes Discothe episode is too much ..I do agree ....
4.Except for 3-4 coleges in chennai ,they don\'t have restriction in boys and talking to each other .They do have restrictions when some boys and girls turn the college into a lover\'s park .There has to be basic environment for studying .
