The situation that Mumbai is facing now, nevertheless puts any community however big or small into deep agony.I Hail from Hyderabad and have never lived in Mumbai, but this is one city which made me attach to itself, say in few hours of my first visit. When I see the same Mumbai suffering, my heart beats for it.All the comments/views put forward in this forum are very much valid.I just amalgamated my thoughts on reading all the articles, watching news.I can just say in one sentence --"Mumbai is strong, administered by visionless people".Yes Mumbai would bounce back, but I just wish it never falls again. We as a nation are in such a quagmire that we should no more be remembered for our history, but for our future and vision. My best wishes were always there for mumbai, but in this tribulance,I would extend my full support for the sake of bringing back our Amchi mumbai , back to its norm. Its high time that the true spirit of Mumbai turns into concrete actions and slap on the face of people who cheated her.Next time I visit Mumbai I'm Sure I would witness a rejuvenated Mumbai and the Local from Andheri to CST would launch at double the speed than usual.Good luck Mumbai !
Bombays deluge was almost like the pralay that has been predicted to be the end of kalyug. Hundreds of people got lifts from total strangers. Even taxi and auto people came forward to help. There was absolutely no violence , fights , harassment or cheating. We knew that places were water logged and that there would be traffic jams. We estimated a delay of three to five hours than the normal .But we were in for a shock. We had to change tracks half a dozen times, search for traffic free roads to reach our destination. There was no electricity in several parts, no street lights and the roads were one big river, no one knew where the gutters were or where the road dividers were. Water was coming upto the windows of vehicles in several places and hundreds of vehicles had stalled. Thousands braved the knee deep, waist deep water and went home walking for as many as ten to fifteen hours. That was the only way to reach home. Mobile lines got jammed, people could not reach their near ones and here radio stations and TV channels assisted by flashing messages. But there was no panic, no grumbling.
The last few days have been horrifying for mumbai & other parts of maharashtra, floods, landslides, traffic, chaos, loss of life & property but its amazing to see things getting back to normal so fast.I stepped out of my house on wednesday evening & could not belive the amount of destruction the rains caused but on the other hand i could see people were struggling to get back to normalcy that spirit of this city keeps us going nothing can stop this city be it terrorist attacks, earthquakes, bombs still thing are fine in a matter of hours. Some t.v shows crete a negative image of the city stating people don't care for each other if their eyes are open now they can get the perfect example of a true mumbaikar. During these times i strongly believe the news channels shud only cover such sensative topics & live the dirty politicians aside. As i am aware people have died in marol as well on the baman daya pada road near a garden many huts have been washed away & around 20 bodies have been recovered. At this time i belive everyone shud focus on the calamity & try & help people in every possible way coz they are in need. Hats off to this great city & i am proud to be a mumbaikar.
Mumbai used to be a lovely city, or so my mother tells me. Actually, it was still quite all right a decade ago, when I used to travel to Matunga daily from Mulund to attend classes at Ruparel.
While the indomitable spirit of the Kattar Mumbaikars scintillates at such low points in Mumbai's history, it can hardly be allowed to overshadow the fact that tragedy did occur, a tragedy that could have been prevented.
That the city's drainage is wanting is common knowledge. There are landslides in low lying areas every year. Just as the tsunami caught the Tamils unawares, we have been caught napping in this case. And while we have had the gumption to step up to the occasion and wear our camaraderie on our sleeve, it begs the question - Why should we allow such a pathetic situation to arise in the first place?
Comparisons to Singapore, Shanghai and Tokyo are not even required. We are not answerable to them. Isn't the government falling short in the eyes of the very people that elected it to power. Having to withstand an inept government for 5 years is one thing, it's quite another having to pay for one with your life.
It's high time BMC elections were fought on Public Utilities planks.
What you say is right my dear friend. It is always good to have self solution. But if we need self solution for everything, then what is the use of government to whom we pay fat taxes??
I left office at 5 pm on Tuesday. Short journey by all accounts - Andheri East to Juhu. There was a massive traffic jam all along the way and finally at SV Road I had to stop opp Shoppers Stop. Not a single policeman in sight anywhere. No relief services. I abandoned my car and waded through waist-deep water for 2 kms. Terrifying at times because there was a strong current to the water as well. Heartening was a group of citizens near the Irla signal who had organised a full-fledged escort operation to guide people through the treacherous water. There were literally thousands of people they must have guided that night. Touching was the senior citizen who was wading thru waist deep water to go to a college in Juhu and get his school-going grand-daughter who had been stranded there from 330 pm to 930 pm - her school bus had broken down and the school had moved all kids there for safety.
UTTERLY DISGUSTING was the govt of maharashtra. No policemen, ambulances, relief in sight. If RR Patil spent half as much time of disaster mgt as he does on dance bars, Mumbai would not have suffered so much. This govt is incompetent and MUST GO.
One has full sympathy for the grim situation Mumbai faces, having spent a useful period of time there. But I wish someone would clarify that though MUmbai pays 40% of the tax in India, it just happens to be handling it like a middleman. Most of those taxes are earned all over the country, and happen to be filed from MUmbai. Something Mumbaikars can be proud of, but not demanding of.
I have been staying in Dubai,And basically belong to Mumbai, With referece to Sahara India News i came to know about mumbai heavy rais and hights rains in indian history in a today. I would like to pass my sympathy with all Mumbaikar and Kokan people as well & would suggest to not to loss of patience. Please take a lesson from Ameriacan accidece which was the worst situation of the world history , how they tackled the situation, Take a lesson from Plestinian how they keep their patience up. As God is great & things will get over shortly.
Wishing you all the best on behalf of all colleages as well.
