Rains in Mumbai
by Sameer Nagarajan on Jul 28, 2005 12:51 PM

I left office at 5 pm on Tuesday. Short journey by all accounts - Andheri East to Juhu. There was a massive traffic jam all along the way and finally at SV Road I had to stop opp Shoppers Stop. Not a single policeman in sight anywhere. No relief services. I abandoned my car and waded through waist-deep water for 2 kms. Terrifying at times because there was a strong current to the water as well. Heartening was a group of citizens near the Irla signal who had organised a full-fledged escort operation to guide people through the treacherous water. There were literally thousands of people they must have guided that night. Touching was the senior citizen who was wading thru waist deep water to go to a college in Juhu and get his school-going grand-daughter who had been stranded there from 330 pm to 930 pm - her school bus had broken down and the school had moved all kids there for safety.

UTTERLY DISGUSTING was the govt of maharashtra. No policemen, ambulances, relief in sight. If RR Patil spent half as much time of disaster mgt as he does on dance bars, Mumbai would not have suffered so much. This govt is incompetent and MUST GO.
