Mumbai's heroes..
by Narayan on Jul 31, 2005 03:54 PM  Permalink

THIS IS MUMBAI. If it was any other city with such deluge, the results would have been more devastating, as every citizen would have depended on somebody else to take care of those suffering. But Mumbaities are a breed apart. Even the slum dwellers who were drenched in rains came on the streets to help people in cars to get out of the waters. Why should have they bothered about people in cars when their own slums are getting washed-off? Mumbai is a city of have's & have not's - so everybody belives that every other person is a HUMAN BEING.

Its unfortunate that Politicians take undue advantage of such a good citizens & make their own money. Where were the shiv sainiks, thakere's, deshmuk's, rane's? For every other issue they take political advantage - but when its a matter of common man's problems - the powers that be - JUST WANT TO STAY PUT IN THEIR OWN LUXURY.

Proud
by Sudarshan on Jul 28, 2005 12:42 PM  Permalink

I salute both you and the people who helped save this imminent tragedy. You all are the people that make life more meaningful and others proud to be associated in some way with you all.
You all are the true heroes - and i implore the media to shine more light on such stories. In the least, you deserve everyone's reverence over our typical media-hungry headline grabbers.

Mumbai's heroes are here
by vijay merchant on Jul 28, 2005 11:36 AM  Permalink

If only some common sense is used by our authorities and administrators I am sure when flooding takes place at least those marooned can be saved even if no fire engines or ambulances can reach. Low cost PVC or Nylon Inflatable boats are used the world over to rescue people in floods. If each fire station in low lying areas has 3 or 4 boats they can easily reach the marooned. While Florida etc. may have even motorised boats we can at least keep 30 or 40 boats in Kurla, Parel, Bandra ,Mahim, Saki Naka etc so that we can save people like the ones marooned in Bandra Kurla Bus Depot.
Will someone listen?? Can we spend a few thousand to get prepared??

Dihaster Preparedness Mumbai flood havoc
by vijay merchant on Jul 28, 2005 11:17 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Reading your report on the local heroes who struggled to save bus passengers marooned in Bandra Kurla area on the 27th July I agree our government failed to be prepared.
Even a dozen inflatable boats that cost a few thousand rupees and need no maintainence or operation cost are not available. In Florida any time there is flooding immediately the rescuers use these inflatable boats and quickly rescue the marooned.
Why ca'nt BMC or Govt. of Maharastra have 20 or 30 such boats at firestations in low lying areas. Will anyone listen to this or will we wait for another monsoon to face another crises.
