Seriously.........
by Manish on Feb 09, 2005 08:35 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Are you into conspiracy theories? The very idea that China intends to grab Nepal like it did Tibet is so ludicrous, it is laughable.

Sure, China has annexed territories in the past that it felt it was historically linked to, but to infer from that that Nepal will be next is absurd. The Chinese are having enough problems with Tibet and the Uighyrs to want to bother anyone else. In fact, there is a view within China, a minority view now, but that is bound to grow if China becomes a democracy, that the Chinese need to revert back to their original borders.

However, that aside, your argument is still very silly, and offers nothing to support it except the wildest conjecture. The Naxalites and the Nepalese Maoists have nothing in common with the people running China right now; the whole idea that China is giving them weapons so that they can defeat India is again, laughable. China knows India is going to be a fellow superpower and wants amicable relations with it--believe me the Chinese today are nothing if not practical.

So, try not to fall for the foolish conspiracy theories running around, and try not to spread fear.

You are doing everyone a disservice.

Your idea of China being friendly to a 'fellow superpower' is loughable too.

You need to read some books regarding the history power rivalry that is going on between India and China since they became republics about 55 years back.

Moreover, superpowers sharing common borders, that too disputed, may be friendly outwardly, but underlined rivalry/competition will go on and on.

Manish,

Live in your dream land. For your information-China holds 12000 sq kilometers of Indian land. In addition, it hold part of Kashmir-a gift from Pakistan. It has one of the Andaman islands, which our beloved Nehru gave to Burma, which in turn is occupied by China. China has surged in Himachal Pradesh. Probably lot more is there, with the leftist news papers, and pseudo secular leftist Govts. at the helm of affairs, we have to scramble for news. Future generations pay a dear price with their lives and lively hood, for the problems created by the evading leaders who get away as Mahatmas. Of course, we have a way of not giving out the news as if nothing has hapened. Vijaya Kumar

Nepal, the next Tibet
by s subramanyan on Feb 09, 2005 07:43 AM  Permalink

While it is our top most priority to see that Nepal is protected from the Maoist onslaught, we need to counter the Chinese casting an eye on Nepal, emboldened as they are with the swallowing of Tibet. Since the 1962-era when the Nehru-Menon due misjudged Chinese intentions and made diastrous moves on the China front, leading to an ignominous defeat, we have travelled far but in our current dispensation, there is the danger of the same old mindset resricting the scvope and range of our foreign and defence policy options. Enfeebling the Maoist threat and containing the Chinese should be our priorities. We have to be careful and watch out what New Delhi is going to do.In this light, the thoughts expressed by Mr. Srinivasan would need to be coinsidered seriously by our government.

Rajeev's hindutwa outlook
by Lishar on Feb 09, 2005 06:22 AM  Permalink

I have noticed Rajeev's clear suport for sangh parivar in many articles. According to him only sangh parivar are indians..not communists, not congressmen and not naxalites. What is wrong with Naxals if you compare them with Relegious extremists like RSS. Naxales at least got an aim to spport the lowerclass people. Rediff should not be a medium for guys like ajeev Srinivasan to express his communal agenda.

Vey moving

Nice article, explaining the real state. It is not a surprise that the maximum development of India has happened during the Hindu government. It is a fact, that the worst thing that could have happened to India is the Nehru family, and during the congress rule (except PVN Rao) the country has only seen a downfall (both ethically and powerwise). Only if the BJP was in power now, NEpals' plight would have been much different. The only hope is that the bad days of this rule get over, and Ram Rajya may prevail again.

Hope the same. But I fear 5 years would be too long and the damage would be irreparable.

nuts!
by Calvin on Feb 09, 2005 04:02 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am surprised at the outrageous crap that the author spouts based on nothing more than paranoid fantasies, sweeping generalizations, flimsy connections (paras even went to Hong Kong twice!) and a total lack of any meaningful research to support the thesis. I wonder if anyone gives thought to the impact over rediff's editorial credibility and role as a opinion leader.

What is the best way to view China's poilicies in the neighbourhood? In Burma in 1988, India was the only country in Asia to show class by refusing to deal with the Burmese junta. China rushed in with arms and aid. Yes, India has backtracked, because it sees its idealism as being ineffectual. Should India see China's support to Pakistan ( missiles, nuclear aid) as something benign?

Nepal/ Tibet
by K. Merlin on Feb 09, 2005 03:56 AM  Permalink

Interesting article..........it is without doubt that the world will look back on this period with distain (yet little responsibility). Both Tibet and the Cathars of the Languedoc are pivotal markers of how history tends to repeat itself. It's funny how time enables people to see with clarity the wrong, once the idols burn, the sacred institutions are destroyed, culture and religeon are wiped out and innocents are systematically slaughtered. Indeed, hindsight offers little reprieve to those who have suffered at the hands of hatred and greed. Spiritual evolution is the greatest challenge of mankind........if we exist long enough to see it to fruition.
