economy vs security
by lakshma reddy .k on Sep 30, 2005 06:00 PM  Permalink

Here is a trade off between security and economy, but not to the extent that is portrayed. Moreover,
'Why even 3%?' doesn't sound good. Look at our neighbor CHINA...they are going to produce 40,000MW by 2020, where as we will end up burning more ash contented coal, if we dont go for nuclear energy...

Indo - US nuclear deal
by K.Kanoj on Aug 23, 2005 09:55 AM  Permalink

If national security is threatened, we must scrap whatever the deal be. Let the leaders think 100 times and do the needful, which will be good for the country

Is not this article important to discuss atleast?
by Sundaresan on Aug 20, 2005 03:58 PM  Permalink

I am very thankful to Mr. Satish Chandra for clarifying the point in a clear way.

Are we really compromising ourself? When the neighbouring countries stick on to their plans of developing "n" arms, should we tie our hands?

India is not for an arm race. But that does not mean that we show more restraint on many fronts and compromise on national security. Is not this which we have been focussing more and spending all our time, energy and money, so far?

we are becoming a loser...
by neshu on Aug 19, 2005 04:18 PM  Permalink

It is crucial what Mr. Satish Chandra has pointed out. Our politicians blindly agree to what is imposed on us not only in this issue but on other policy matters as well. During the recent years we have seen our neighbours growing more violent both militarily and economically but it looks like our politicians doesn't bother much about the same. I think we need a hardliner as Prime Minister and not a softliner like Mr. Singh.

Recent US visit of our PM!!!
by Mahesh N V on Aug 19, 2005 03:24 PM  Permalink

I was initially under confusion as to what is the diff. bet' having the separate civil and military atomic capacities n combining them(as of today). Mr. Chandra's article has clearly given out the problems posed to India's National Security by this Nuclear deal with US. But alas, our great PM doesn't seem to understand this basic fact! Also,it is shame on our media not to highlight such grave issues to the general public and gather a opinion on such matters of grave concern. We should not be entering into such dubious deals in the first place and even after entering into such a deal media is sitting quite on such issue. In such cases, where opposition doesn't care about India and ruling party first of all is least bothered about India's national security, who will enlighten the public on such matters? Why is the media there if it is also not bothered about bringing such issues into people's notice? God save our Bharat !

Nuclear deal between India and the US, really needs rethinking - better do it before it is too late. Do not expose india at the expense of National Security.

What if the nuclear deal falters, after we sign the IAEA safeguard agreement? We would be binding us permanantly to place our reactors under international safeguards plus whatever other conditions(not revealed to the nation by our govt)that the PM had agreed to.Is this tough bargaining or blatant sell out?
