Findings of Nanavati commission
by Ajay Bankoti on Aug 12, 2005 05:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Level of backlash always favours majority.
Emotions hardly care for what is right or wrong. Emotions have nothing to do with public or private service. If we look at the history Indian or World, most heinous crimes are well planned but backlash of people, especially majority, is never planned as it is always spontaneous. Rules in the book rarely control emotions. Just for example, recently after London bombings, one Brazilian innocent person was shot dead in London mistakenly by police in uniform (it was not a mistake but emotions overruled the judgement in policeman's mind). Poor Staines got burned alive in Orissa as majority thought they were doing wrong. So, it is the perception of the majority at the critical time of incident which decides what is right and what is wrong. Just a quick one, why Kashmiri pandits are scared to return to Kashmir (their homeland)only because of majority in Kashmir hates them.
Finally after these incidents, we always debate, investigate, set up inquiry commisions as usual one after another BUT still feelings of majority shall always count.
I am sorry if my comments hurt anyone.

We hang our head in shame
by Vivek on Aug 12, 2005 05:27 PM  Permalink

I agree compltely with the letter and spirit of Sai's disguised outburst against the hypocricy that dictaes our daily lives. More than anything else, we Indians have forgotten that morality, integrity, tolerance and honesty are the only virtues that can lead us anywhere into the future. Rather than pointing an accusing finger at the unscrupulous politicians, lets start looking inwards. Its we who have made Mulayams and Laloos and Mamatas and Modis what they are today. They are only mirror reflections of what we'd be if we were elected in their place. Newspapers each day our full of XYZ party activists burning theatres and tearing down film posters, vandalising gift and card shops on Valentine's Day, blacking out English sign boards et al. Somewhere along the line, we have forgotten that there are only three problems that India suffers from: Population, Poverty, and Illiteracy. The day we are able to find valid, sustainable answers to these problems, all our worries will vapor away. We as individuals must focus our energies on ridding ourselves of these problems, and let Aamir Khan decide where to shoot "Mangal Pandey". If we have a problem with that, simple: Don't watch the movie.

Powerful Media
by Hussain on Aug 12, 2005 05:19 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think Mr.Saisuresh is trying to get something out of nothing. For his kind information in 1984, there was no Powerful Media and nor a Powerful Opposition. That's why 1984 riots cannot ignite the same hue and cry as it happened in the case of Gujarat riots. Thank Nanavati commission and present powerful media, that atlast Jagdish Tytler was forced to give hir resignation. But, I don't think even after 20 years from now & some 200 Nanavati reports & 1000 times powerful media can force MODIJI to step down from his kursi, even he is in a small Mayor of Ahmedabad then(if not chief minister of Gujarat). Also please tell me what happened to SriKrishna Commission's findings. If you want to talk truth please be unbiased.

a crime worse than MODIs
by v.krishnamurthy on Aug 12, 2005 05:12 PM  Permalink

1984 riot ,if we recall is not a planned carnage. Not a communal war too. More spontaneous, but government was a silent witness too. It was also a retaliation to KALISTAN movement and terror. Compartively a gangsterism of ruling party. But Mr. Modis role in Gujrat is pogram of violence, orchastrated and conducted in a Nazi style. One justice Nanavathi had come late and gave his vertict after the events are almost erased. At least in Gujrat, we shall see the judiciary acts before all burnts backeries are covered in sands. Rip pan winkle judiciary system is a curse to this nation.

You are Right
by Narayanan Iyer on Aug 12, 2005 05:11 PM  Permalink

This message is really touching and makes you think a lot but certainly at the end of the day, the Judiciary has really got to act very tough, otherwise things are not heading for right.

Of Crimes & punishments
by Tressa on Aug 12, 2005 04:47 PM  Permalink

Sai, in no way are these crimes any different i.e. against the Sikhs(1984) or the Muslims (Gujarat or '91). The difference if any is in the fact that when the man from congress committed these crimes his govt was in power with an absolute majority, and was once again voted into power for another term. Unfortulately for Modi, this wasnt to be. Even though his party stood by him, the BJP did not have the luxury of an absolute majority so their allies who claim to be secular, cut down Modi to size. Then the BJP went on to lose the next elections. To sympathise with Modi for having been pillorised is downright criminal.

Token apology
by Rajeswararao on Aug 12, 2005 04:46 PM  Permalink

It reminds me of another token apology, that given by the last Pope for the church's failure to protect jews 65 years ago and all the atrocities committed by the church officials in America like child molestation etc. Or the apology given by London. I do not remember the British apologising for what they did in India - the persecution of Indians, etc.

A crime worse than Modi's
by Raj Khalid on Aug 12, 2005 04:30 PM  Permalink

I agree entirely with the views of Sai but I fail to understand why we blame ONLY the politicians. Regardless of the "instructions" from their political masters, the Police Commisisoners, DCPs and eveyone down the line also took an oath to uphold the Constituion of India and to serve and to protect. Why were the Police Commissioners of New Delhi in 1984, of Mumbai in 1992-93 and later on in Ahmedabad so spineless? In fact they should be charged for aiding and abetting the riots and hauled off to jail.

I recall a show on TV where a Minister agreed that there was political intereference but this was because every morning there was a line of IPS officers with hands folded and heads bowed begging the minister to interfere. In fact the minister went on to say that if a Police Commissioner did not obey "instructions" which were wrong nothing could happen to him except a transfer. And if the officer is sincere he should go whereever he is transferred since his seniority and pay scale are in any case protected.

So while we blame politicians for instigating or being passive at the time of riots let us not forget to condemn the spineless police officers who cannot control the riots.

Anti-sikh and post Godhra are different matters
by Debjani Roy on Aug 12, 2005 04:27 PM  Permalink

how can u all termed the anti-sikh riots and Post Godhra Riots are same....they can not be....
ant-sikh riots were a vandalism to show their faithfullness towards Party but Godhra riots related to emotion and justice.what they did after Godhra were self-motivated as it was a attack on
humanity by Anti-India elements on train.
Modi no way related and if all will attack on him,may be one day he will be Termed as Hero one day.
Modi is great,
