Govt. role in disaster management
by Ajay Bisht on Aug 02, 2005 03:35 PM  Permalink

Its not a new situation. Everytime any dissater hits any part of the country, there is always a system failure and loss of lives and infrastructre. Goverment has made it a habbit. There is no initiative for avoiding disasters. Infact I sometimes feel that may be the grant for help of the victims is misused by the authorities and may be because of this they wish for more disasters.

Corruption has now trapped each and every part of the government. Seeing the current scenario, I wish we should have been under the british rule. We don't deserve independence. If we deserve it then it should have been under a dictator or under army like China. But for sure, We don't deserve democracy.

curruption takes it all...
by Mohammad Fazlur Rahman on Aug 02, 2005 03:34 PM  Permalink

so the latest idea is to blame corruption. it is good. and who these corrupt people are? the same public who is dwelling the same society. no body thinks. who elects the corrupt people in the parliament? the same public takes bribe when time comes for their greed but when they are ruined they blame to government. yes i agree bribe is the biggest enemy of humanity. but when some people raise voice for harsh punishment for bribe taker it becomes barbarism for some people who know very well they are going to be benefitted of it today or later. so they motivate even those who are suffer in the name of race, religion and community and ultimately same public suffers. this whole system needs a change and the punishment and rules given by the religion of peace (islam) has to be implemented. bribe takers are to be beaten by lashes and denied their rights socially. it is not barbaric it purely and truely in the favour of true humanity. it is natural law which is taking its course slowly but gradualy despite all kind of effort to stop it.

mumbai infrastructure = who will set things right??
by MAHESH B on Aug 02, 2005 03:32 PM  Permalink

The entire country has seen the plight that all mumbaikars have gone through in the past week. if mumbai comes to a standstill the whole of india suffers!

hence, in the interest of the entire country the politicians better start implementing the planned makeover of mumbai in right earnest and with all seriousness. we dont want a shanghai or a singapore but we just ask proper planning and quality of work. planned infrastructure and good transport facilities.

we mumbaikars sadly have no time to take up our own issues.hence, its better that the politicians dont force us to do that. because the economic losses both actual and notional will be immense for the entire nation.

please do not take us for granted and force us to come on the street and bring things to a standstill. we can very well channelise our energy in doing that if needed but that will be a waste of energy and resources.

we mumbaikars once again appeal to those in power both at the centre and in maharashtra that its time to ACT! a better mumbai will only bring in more economic stability and higher taxes for the centre.

PLEASE DO NOT TEST OUR PATIENCE AND DO NOT TAKE US FOR GRANTED!

A PROUD MUMBAIKAR

''Stop blaming the rains''
by Mrs. Gopal on Aug 02, 2005 03:32 PM  Permalink

As is usually said by the BMC, they will definitely perform better next time - at this rate they will never be prepared for any crisis. None of the politicians deserve any vote from the public - where do they all go at such times - ask any of the politicians to wade through chest-deep water and let me get the feel of the cold, slimy water through which the millions of mumbaites waded on that fateful Tuesday. The politicians and municipal corporates are to be taken to task - they only know to fill their pockets and ensure that they are safe in their bungalows. As someone rightly said, since they are voted to serve the people, they should be on the streets with the public in their time of distress.

My sister (58 years old) had to wade through chest deep water. She walked on her toes or else she would be drowned - that too at midnight when she didnt even know where exactly she was headed to. We only have the politicians going overseas and giving long and beautiful speeches - we are making a mockery of ourselves by not reaching out to the people in times of crisis.

Ramput corruption in our govt. administration
by Maneshwar on Aug 02, 2005 03:31 PM  Permalink

The experience we had in Mumbai it shows, how our govt.functions. We do not hear any developmental works by the govt. (it is only show)instead, we find in our TV news/or in news paper, that our politicians jumping from one party to other if they do not get power.Just abusing each other and confusing the educated & uneducated public.

Where are they now? Why are they not talking ? Let them find out from china/ Japan/singapore how are they building their infrastucture? What kind of Road/drinage system and town planning they have? Why it is not possible in India?

We find any project, means how to grab the % of that money? The most corrupt practice existing in our system.Unless we change this with change in people attitude we will not be able to have India as fully developed country.

Learn from Surat
by Mangesh Loharkar on Aug 02, 2005 03:29 PM  Permalink

I think its time we look inwards and take some lesson from Surat. How they have transformed that city is absolutely amazing to follow. It's clean and well disciplined, follows basic civilian guidelines.
If our brothers & sisters in Surat can do it why can't we?

Incapable Government and CM
by Raju Raina on Aug 02, 2005 03:26 PM  Permalink

Its irony of India That incapable people are at the helm of its affair since its independence. You dont need to be qualified to be a leader you need to know how to genrate hatered between people and rule. This is what our politicians do. Coming to Mumbai Floods isn't our CM incapable, its great shame to see a CM of a state to be so helpless and clueless on TV interviews. When all the state people were looking at him for help he was more helpless than them, and in between that helpless also he got time to invite Rane to his party and Cabinet and distributed sweets on stage and flowers were showered on Rane, and CM was laughing like he has made a remarkable feet. Our CM didn't knew people in flood affected areas need food but he got time to eat sweets and distribute at this time of tragedy, how shameful our CM is. Yes rains poured all the time high and broke all the records, but that doesnt mean we could not do anything and put our hands up and say we are helpless and let the people die the same way it has happen now). So for what our CM is there, if he is helpless and incapable we don't need a person like him on that chair. If people have to help themselves and fend for themselves.

Stop blaming the rains
by syed azeem on Aug 02, 2005 03:25 PM  Permalink

Zubin Mehta has aptly put it and kudos to him that he sees what every Indian sees in the disaster that the Civic Planners of Mumbai have created. Its a Frankestein gone out of Control.Unabated illegal constructions popping up in every nook and corner with infrastructure at one hundredth the size to manage and support these behemoths.Low lying areas which are prone to waterlogging get approval from the so called authorities to be developed.Illegal hutments are allowed to crop up in sections of the city so that the so called votebanks of the local MLA's and National MP's getting re-elected from these constituencies remains unaffected.Lets agree we the citizens of this country are nothing but akin to the malarial mosquito immune to quinine. We have let this happen right under our noses cared a damn.To realize one day that we would be the price ultimately and not the so called keepers of the Constitution. The buck stops with us and not with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra or the Prime Minister of India, it is we who lose our lives our families our children not them.We pay the price when the policeman takes bribe, when the BMC Engineer lets your neighbour build illegally.
