Its sad to see what Mumbai is going thru at the moment. Never in all these years have we seen this large scale devastation in Mumbai.
But I feel besides the government, which anyway has proved its inefficiency, its the mumbaikars who also need to accept the responsibility for this. It is a well known fact that in the fight to earn our livelihood we have shown utter disrespect for the city that has given us so much. Inspite of knowing the effects of plastic bags, we still continue to use them and look what it has lead to. This is just one small example of how we have turned a blind eye to our environment.
Its equally true that what happened was very difficult to stop, but if we had shown some civic sense in the past the situation would not have been blown so much out of proportion and the plights of the affected could have been lessened to a certain extent.
I hope now that we have learned a very bitter lesson, in the future, we as citizens of this megapolis show more responsibility.
We would definitely want this city to be Shanghai but not at the cost of strangling our ecology.
Less use of Plastic material such as polythene which is non disposable and most of the places Polythene slow down the water flow or if it stuck in drainage then it stops water from flowing.
yes, stop blaming the rains, and start blaming ourselves. Why are we so honest with our income tax and why are we paying them. stop paying taxes at-least for the year in which such calamity takes place. Sardar Patel has already shown the way under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. Let us make sardar forum for mumbai city and do not pay those 58000 crore rupees to central government to be thrown in UP and Bihar. What are we getting in return? peanuts of 100 crore. when Delhi is getting 6000 crore for its development. Mumbaikers wake up and fight for your rights or die chuhe ki maut, then you will not have to blame anyone else.
Although no one can deny that it is because of the negligence of the government and state authorities that there was much loss to life and property during the rains,we should also realise that as citizens,we should all be more responsible. That is,please STOP littering.Use less plastic.Do not treat the roads and rails as giant garbage dumps.A lot of clogging of sewers and drains could've been avoided if there wasn't so much litter strewn across the roads. It's disappointing to watch commuters in trains and buses and even pedestrains casually dumping cups, wrappers, cans etc onto tracks and roads, without even realising how much damage that can do to the streets not only during, but even in the absence of rains. It will also be noteworthy to mention what a disastrous example such insensitive behaviour would set to the younger generation. It's a shame that children grow up without having any civic sense, and continue to follow in the footsteps of their elders. It's all well and good to say that the true spirit of 'Mumbaikars' arose during this testing time, and 'Mumbaikars' have a never-say-die attitude. But are we even worthy of that tagline if we continue to ill-treat it?Well,I don't think so!
