bombay floods
by venkatesh mutalik on Aug 01, 2005 07:59 PM  Permalink

I think the chief secretary and the commissioner of the municipality should be retired immediately. This will give a serious view to the problem. This will also make the other babus sit up and work. Ultimately when one loses hope in the politicians the final call will have to be taken by efficient babus.

common sense? not from b schools
by harish desai on Aug 01, 2005 07:49 PM  Permalink

i agree with the view that was expressed by ministers of maharashtra regarding mr deshmukh not being very assertive and not being able to handle the situation.
i have seen instances on news channels where a mound of garbage was heaped at places like kurla on monday the first of august.
was it not the duty of bmc workers to clean the same and prevent the outbreak of an epidemic.
similarly workers of bmc were very slow to action on wednesday after the tragedy hit mumbai.
also reliance energy should be pulled up and made to provide answers to the gaffs committed by it in supplying electricity to many areas in mumbai.
even the maharashtra government should be asked to give answers as to why this incident occurred inspite of their having in place a disaster management plan.

why deshmukh government failed
by Kishore Gersappa on Aug 01, 2005 07:38 PM  Permalink

The reasons given by the government is that the deluge was more than expected hence they could not anything. But every year the deluge is as per expection even then we have not seen any sort of governmet action for people affcted by flooding etc.
What about the BMC with the Shiva sena who sware by the Amchi mumbai and mumbaikars what have they done for the Marathi manus or for anybody for that matter. It was only the ordinary citizens of mumbai who worked for mumbaikars. Every year mumbai has several ares flooded and they could have decided before the monsoon what they could do for the people during the monsoons.

C.M.-Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh's Ordeal
by Cdr.S.K.Rai I.N.(Retd.) on Aug 01, 2005 07:34 PM  Permalink

Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh is a perfect blend of vision & wisdom. His refind cultured approach is often mistaken as lack of enthusiasm. He has proved himself as true to form efficient administrator.
His Chief Secy. should have advised him to codially invite the prominent community leaders, ex Chief Ministers(if any in Mumbai),D.G.Police with his senior officials,Chief Fire Officer-Mumbai Fire Brigade, and the Commander-in-Chief of Western Naval Command.
It might have been due to lack of exposure, miscalculation of the situation on Tuesday 26 July evening when it was apparent that it was an unusual heavy downpour.By asking a help from Navy, would not have caused any harm to the good reputation of the Govt. The premier command of Indian Navy,in Mumbai has fully experinced sea divers in Command Diving Team and modern life saving equipments. It would have been the life saving boon. When in doubt never hesitate asking the friend (Defence-Indian Navy), or the senior's advice. It is alesson to be learnt.
Please don't blame the C.M.alone.
May God bless the Maharshtra Govt always in all ways.

Why Deshmukh Government failed
by MP Jain on Aug 01, 2005 07:24 PM  Permalink

I fully endorse the praise of Jailalita's handling of Tsunami disaster. She is one tough lady who knows how to handle the lazy government servants. They understand only her language.

Govt has not failed
by vijay on Aug 01, 2005 07:08 PM  Permalink

It is a fashion in this country to blame the govt for every thing, this is the one of the developing (god knows when this tag will come to an end)country where people depend on the govt even for their smallest of need. No govt in the world, not even the govt of USA could have done anything better in such a circumstances which aroused due to the murder of this city from its irresponsible population. The office goers added to the mess by rushing to their homes when actually they could have stayed overnight, this could have eased the pressure on the govt and could have allowed them to concentrate on flooded areas. Its a shame that we allow our own people to stay in such inhuman conditions. People don`t vacate from risky places even when told to do so. If there is any body to be blamed then it is those state govts which are not able to give a decent living to its population and force them to migrate to mumbai and maharashtra. The media is unneccesarily raising the hype by focussing on those areas where help has not reached. I think this is time for introspection and all of us, instead of blaming the state government, also realise our share of responsibility.

Rains in Maharashtra - Bombay
by XYZ on Aug 01, 2005 07:02 PM  Permalink

Hi,

I am glad that some people have to shake these politicians by the head and wake them up.

But, I would like to ask you, Is only the presiding party or Govt. has to take action and all others just keep a sly eye on them and wait to point a finger, I will call this man-slaughter.

If you have noticed or read about the news of many locals helping strangers who were stranded in BEST bus or trains, they do not represent any political party, Do they?

When ever single resident of Maharashtra is aware of the crisis then what is the other political parties waiting for? It is to these people where all the politicians go begging for votes.

Regards,

George

P.S: Sorry for any foul or raged words / comment.
