Bombay Rains
by SB on Aug 03, 2005 12:44 AM  Permalink

I do not think there was anything such as "Disaster Preparedness"...

It is time India (not just government, the public, private sector and NGOs included!) thinks of long term, infrastructural investments, to improve quality of life for everyone, rather than improving only IT, biotech, space research. This is like a adding feathers to the cap, when the other parts of the body are deteriorating !

Flooded Mumbai
by Dinesh Padawe on Aug 02, 2005 11:28 PM  Permalink

Our finacial capital was under water last week, is shameful thing for the country like India which is dreaming of becoming super power. This calamity occur when rulling party was busy in dirty politics.
Disaster Management plan remain on paper. When peoples were crying for their lives official were hiding in house. There were no communication between people and government.Failure of governmet to give corrct information and stop rumours.Volunteers should be trained locally to fight any calamity.
Plastic bags should be totaly banned from the city which is the main reason for blocking the nullahs and gutter and spoile our environment.drainage system should be improved and development on salt land should be stopped immediately which is the main source of consume flooded water. We should learn from this lesson rather waiting for another incidence.

Mumbai lacks infrastructure...
by Sanjay A on Aug 02, 2005 11:11 PM  Permalink

Mumbai city is overloaded with people pouring into the city from the rest of India. While the count of people residing in the city has increased exponentially in the last 2 decades, the infrastructure development has never happened, except for the numerous fly-overs built during the SS-BJP regime in 1998-2003, thankfully. After the storm, the government should first act on making sure that deadly diseases do not spread as many animals, pest, etc. carcasses are lying everywhere thus becoming a feeding ground for diseases. They need to clear the areas of dead bodies and sprinkle anti-malaria, anti-plague and other insecticides. After this, the city planning needs to take a fresh look at the infrastructure programs to make sure that the city can accomodate, water, electricity and commuting services to every citizen of Mumbai. This can happen by completing road projects such as Bandra-Worli bridge, new western and central railway lines, a brand new man-made lake to supply clean drinking water to all the parts of the expanding Mumbai and of course by making sure power programs such as Dabhol come alive early and more distributed power generation units such as Solar, Wind and hydro.

stop blaming government for last tuesday !!!
by sadashiv on Aug 02, 2005 07:03 PM  Permalink

it would be a better civic sense that we stop blaming govt on wat happened last tuesday and thereafter in Maharashtra.it was a once in century kind of event and it would be better if everybody start playing their roles effectively.afterall its we who form the govt and its machinery.we are policeman we are railwaynam and somebody from us is a minister.
if still we blame only the govt then its high time that we Indians do a introspection for the kind of civsense we are left with.

Re. Let the Govt. Act.
by Daruvala on Aug 02, 2005 05:15 PM  Permalink

The solution lies in having a committee formed by able minded, intellegent, honest citizens, who have the welfare of the city, both people and environment, at heart and are not prone to corruption or corrupting, to oversee the working of our efficiently inefficient BMC, Traffic Dept, and all other such Governmental agencies, to make them transparent and accountable for the work they are supposed to be doing, without having to resort to bribes to get anyting done, and to ensure that the taxpayer's money is being utilized in a proper and effective way, as it is meant to be, and not sidelined to fill certain pockets. Teach these agencies to clean up their act and to clean up and keep the city clean on a daily basis, instead of shifting the blame on drains, rains and what have you, and the intensity of future flooding or any other calamity will be greatly reduced. The present tendency of Promises Are Made To Be Broken, instead of Kept, just to get their vote bank, is also a big problem. God save us from these people!

Rain!Rain!Rain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!all over..........
by SUJATA SHETTY on Aug 02, 2005 05:02 PM  Permalink

Dear Editor,

I it indeed a shock & suprises to citizen of mumbai that a simple rain can create such an havoc that many thousands became home less....many lost thier life...many of us stranded in various places which we never even drempt of.

We ( Cultured & educated always think by wearing a crisp dresses & going to work is a major achivement in our life??????????????? never give a ear to the problems sarrounded by us..if the guttur is blocked it is not our job,.it is a job of government Or bmc.but we are the one who create that mess. we know there are many metyhods to discard the garbage ..but we are far above to do that & the poor (Uneducated...whom we are supposed to educate. create awareness on the enviournment & cleaniness not bothered)add to the problems by creating all the problems there...

The time has come for the responsible citizen like to stand up & teach the society to be more aware & responisble not to create the mess..around us.. keep the nature & city clean..so heavy tio heaviest rain or flood cant change the face of mumbai.

Regreat if any spell & grammer error.

Thanks & regards

Sujata

condition of Mumbai
by som ranjan on Aug 02, 2005 04:53 PM  Permalink

Government of each state should now rise above their pitiable politics and start thinking about the poor citizens of this country.Mumbai has witnessed the state of their politicians as they are only the sufferer. After paying such huge tax they are still suffering.
All the resources are either spend on the luxury of the politicians...or are deposited in their account.
Its an earnest request to all politicians to do at least something for the country.
I here beg Mr Lalu Yadav to at least think of the state of Bihar because floods are common thing in this state for a long time.

Let the Govt. act
by Harish Bhatia on Aug 02, 2005 04:52 PM  Permalink

The disaster proved Mumbai too is an ordinary city. My nephew traveled from Delhi and was stuck at Virar, slept in the dark train for 14 hours, ate nothing, until he was rescued by his grand father. Shameful place called Mumbai, where everyone was out to cheat and fleece the common man. Mechanics, pullers, vada pao seller, autos, taxis . . each one made hay while the sun shone for them. If remotely, someone helped, so what? That even animals do.

Mumbai No Shanghai
by Kasturi Borkotoki on Aug 02, 2005 04:42 PM  Permalink

Its true that what happened was a natural calamity but the outcome that followed was due to bad planning and foresight. The city was just allowed to grow out of proportions.why cannot we Indians plan?We have seen what one night of rains did to the most happening business capital of India. But saddest part is that most of the other Indian Towns and cities are on the pathways to the same hell.Do we have a single city which boasts of smooth power, electricity and water supply in India? We have over the past few years seen most of our cities touting about tall malls and multi storeys but what about the slums hovering at their bases? Its a story of perfect imbalances. India cannot progress if we ignore the basic problems of population, and infrastucture.
We have seen that the government has failed. But why waste time blaming only the government? why cant the moneyed filmstars who earn in crores for a single project get together along with other industrialists and create a corpus fund for planned development of our business capital? What about our beauty queens who talk about world charity and peace? Shouldnt charity begin at home?
