You write with an emotional pen
by Sridhar Chari on Apr 27, 2005 02:35 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear Rajeev,
While your anti-China statement is palpable. Do pause to consider future realities and the reality of common sense. Japanese companies in India are not exactly the do gooders in India. Indeed companies like Honda are eyeing a takeover of Hero honda at a later stage. Also Japan was one of the staunchest critics of our nuke tests and it demanded accountability fo calalmity relief funds that it sent to India.
And By no means does Chian enjoy such a free reign to capture the worl. Bear in mind, the U.S. strong presence in E Asia, and also Russia's growing aspirations. Japan itself has the cpapcity to go nuclear, even though, the US will not allow India to directly proliferate to Japan. And it is totally imbecile to expect 'single spoilt' brats to go delinquent and get killed in a war. China as a matter of fact is reducing the strength of the massive PLA. What India needs to do is forge a series of stategic alliances with each of the competing powers. The US to balance China, China to balance the US. Russia to provide arms, Israel for cutting edge technology and even European majors like France. It is in these subtle nuances can we carve out our unique place

Japan in the number two economy and India should
make conscious efforts to leverage that fact.
Rather than blindly looking at the west, we should
engage more with Japan, which has huge potential
which will very beneficial for India.

A Great Article on the Indo Japanese Alliance
by Anuj on Apr 27, 2005 01:21 PM  Permalink

Hi Rajeev!

Your article on Indo Japanese Alliance was great. But hat's off to China as well. They will strike two birds with one stone by endorsing India's claim to UN Security Council Seat:

1. Keep a formidable competitor at bay, JAPAN will never be a DUMB FOLLOWER of China's diktats.

2. Win a moredocile and manageable companion in India, being the sole Asian member, CHINA badly needs an ally.

Let's see WHAT NEW DELHI SEES IN IT!

C'mon....Japan and India!
by Mayya on Apr 27, 2005 12:29 PM  Permalink

You ought to be painting a rosy picture here. I have myself come across a lot of Japanese. I always had an impression that they look down upon poor countries and enjoy sporting a sense of arrogance. They are too proud of their richness. Indeed Asian nations are trying to realign due to realities that are dawning them...viz., envisaged American power vacuum and rapid and so-called peaceful rise of China. In any sense, business with Japan is unlikely to grow given the stiff competition they face from the chinese added with Indian apetite for cheap stuff. True we have lessons to learn from the Japanese, but recent overtures from Japanese politicians with their prime minister included... is that they are very insensitive towards their neighbours. We need to focus here. We wanna be in the security council and not Japan. Japan may be a second largest economy, but that is today. Given that it has taken 50 years for UN reforms to be even considered, and also that India and China are the fastest growing economies with majority of the world's population residing in these countries, it is highly unlikely that today's qualification of Japan will last long.

Well, a good set of points but our sour relationship with China is of our own making. And we are no less hegemonistic. Any and everybody in INdia who is powerful abuses power. Be it a powerful husband or wife, a powerful upper-caste community or a lower-caste one, and more so in teh case of religious adventurism by the minorities. Except for the religious non-adventurism practised by the majority religion in India, we are a dominating people.
China is culturally closer to us than Japan is and we need to acknowledge that. Also, while Japan may be more honourable on the outside, honourable people do not have comfort women, as far as I can understand. Japan's past also shows signs of invasion and torture, a past that the Japanese somehow are very proud of. While it is good to have a good relationsip with all countries, the maximum advantage will be a mending of relationship with China. Let us use Japanese technology and learn perfectionism from them. Let us also learn honour from them until we are really honourable people.
China is also important because we need to break the China - paki friendship for our own good.

Good ray of hope
by Krishna Sastry on Apr 27, 2005 11:05 AM  Permalink

The article is a very interesting one. It gives a lot of logical reasoning as to why India and Japan can be good partners in different fields and what benefits both the nations can derive by doing so. I also would like to add that Indian companies can benefit by improving the quality of their products and services with the help of Japanese companies. Hope the political and business class in both the countries see the oppourtunities present and utilize them.

should india also proliferate nukes??
by chaitanya on Apr 27, 2005 10:07 AM  Permalink

dude wake up.. what u r sugggesting isnt feasible.. we cant "EXPORT" nukes to japan or taiwan or any other country.. and to contain china we will need something like mutual defence treaty. japan wont sign a mutual defence pact with india, they already have security umbrella from the US and dont need one from india. plus, the japanese need the chinese much more now with the north korean nuclear crises cuz only china has enough influence on north korea to make it come back to the negotiating table. bottom line is, tsrategic alliance, economic alliance and all is ok.. but we got to help ourselves noone else will come to our aid against china.

Great Article
by Vittal Mallya on Apr 27, 2005 05:34 AM  Permalink

I totally agree with the author. In Singapore Indians are treated as third grade citizens where as japanese respect us. This I am saying by my experience a I have been living in south east asia for past 4yrs.
The author has not exaggerated anywhere in his writing and I dont think anybody could have done a better job. Once again great article. Thanks

by rakesh mp on Apr 27, 2005 01:48 AM  Permalink

A very good article. It's time that the Indian and Japanese forge a long term partnership in the areas of Business, Political, Strategic, Defence, and Cultural fields.
Another good article from Rajeev.
