Sikkim a very strong part of India, from the past history........
by shobana nair on Jul 14, 2008 03:39 PM  Permalink

Chinese feel Sikkim should belong to them, and try some comments to feel the pulse of the Sikkimese people, now I am sure they will know better than day dreaming about Sikkim being a part of China. They always want the good parts of India like the Sikkem and the Arunachal Pradesh,to come into their border land,as most of their northern region are barren and undented.

Dear Mr. Daniel and rediff.com,
Sikkim is very much a part of our India. Your title makes it seem as though Sikkim exists in the USA or China or Africa.

Daniel be careful the next time u 'create' ur title.

Gorkhaland is a must
by hitesh sharma on Jul 14, 2008 03:13 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I love sikkim and gorkhaland (may this dream come true). Sikkim is really progressing fast and the systems are great.

Darjeeling and the area rightfully claimed by the locals as Gorkhaland would progress too had it been free of West Bengal.

Gorkhaland is a patriotic movement by the Nepalese son on the soil who are still considered foreigners..... sad when india is attacked every village in this region loses young men and they take pride serving the country....

Sad that whole of india is not supporting Gorkhland movement and these wonderful people are still underdeveloped and are exploited by the West Bengal government....

Even the local Bengalis want Gorkhaland...

These people have given their blood.... least we can do is to give them a place where they are respected

Gorkhaland is A MUST for Darjeeling district. West Bengal has ruined this wonderful place. Sikkim itself is a small state and is actually well maintained than Darjeeling. Therefore there is no need for Sikkim to be bifurcated.

Darjeeling rightfully belongs to the LEPCHAS not these DarjeelngNepalese who claim to be Gorkhas but actually do not belong to the Gorkha tribe. These guys wiped out the Lepchas and the real Sikkimese by increasing their population and dominating them demographically so much so they are just microscopic minority in their own native land. The same trick they are trying to do so in the plains of North Bengal along with ousted Neplese from Bhutan and illegal migrants from adjoining Nepal. Introduce VISA and drive away the illegal Neaplese from the plains and hill region. Do you know one MP from Tripura or manipur who is a Nepali have been found that he is not an Indian Citizen. He faked his papers and claimed to have born in Siliguri. The case is pending. This is a very dangerous trend and must be stopped immediately. Gorkhaland is a ploy for a greater Nepal cause. If it becomes a state with all other extra priviledges these guys with little education and talent will enjoy great lifestyle at hardworking Indian tax payers money. The Indian and West Bengal government should not overlook these facts. They hate Bengalis yet they live on Bengalis money. Bengali tourists, Bengali tax payer, Bengali profesors who educated them to become graduates. I don't know why the moderator has decided to remove my discussions just because these guys are afraid to tell the truth and tell others of the truth.

The rediff moderator must restore my statements. They cannot censor my expression.

Just Cool down Amit. First, Gorkhaland should be given, because Commis has not done any good to these peoples.
Second, it is better that we have more states rather than more countries, like Bangladesh & Pakistan around us.

Good point Hitesh. You are right that a country as large as India and one which lives with a beuaracracy handed over by the British (Very few ruling the very many) - we need more devolvement of power to states. We also need to remove the UP/Bihar dominance of our politics - if these states had good politicians to give - they would be the most developed by now, right ?

The failure to do so in the past has caused problems in Kashmir, Punjab, Assam etc. If you read the history of these problems - you will find that the original demands of these ppl was different from what is eventually became !! shame that our central politicians think that a state wanting to develop itself by its own effort is 'anti-national'. A true democracy has to run like a nationalistic but empowered federation of states. Look at the US, look at UK.

yes we support gorkhaland, as these people are supposed and have proven to be patriotic. Nepalese people who have lived here for the generations have the right to create their own state and serve this country; and Nepalese will surely progress. THese bongs never come in support for the Kashmiri hindus who have lost their land to outsiders but very well remember that NEPALESE are outsiders even when they are supposed to be fighting for the army.

You have a valid point. If bongs can have West Bengal, if Tamils can have Tamil Nadu, if Punjabis can have Punjab why not Gorkhaland for majority Gorkhas and Nepalis. Either dissolve all states which is named on lingustic lines or create Gorkhaland for Gorkhas.

This is because the Nepalese and Sikkimese have Sikkim as their own state. You guys cannot have more than one state. Bengalis too are in large population in certain areas of Bihar and Jharkand or Orissa does that mean they should have a separate state, although Bihar was once part of Bengal during British India. There are always overlapping population from one state tio the other, that does not mean the district should be made a state. As a State you need to generate enough revenue and have the necessary population, where do you think you will get it. You cannot live on borrowed money. The centre only inversts in Central projects not State projects. Darjeeling district can hardly generate enough revenue. Tea like jute is a dying industry. Tourism is seasonal. As a separate state how do you think you will generate your own money. I hope not by smuggling, gambling or terrorism just like Nepal did under the ousted king.
Even Buddadeb Bhattachrya find it difficult to get the funds for many of his pipeline projects. The Central government can provide only 25% to 50% of the total project cost as loan, the other 50 to 75% amount has to be sourced by the State. Because Bengal has a highly intellectual, hitech skilled cheap manpower plus natural resources including huge population with money in their pockets
, some international banks like ADB and bank of Japan can extend the loan as they are sure to recover the amount. Sikkim is a different story just like J&K.

You guys cite examples of Jharkand and Chattisgarh as separate states. Since they are very rich in natural resources like iron ore, bauxite, mica, aluminium, zinc, copper, even uranium , diamonds these states can generate revenue and attract investment from private industries such as Mittal and Jindal. Uttarakhand is still lagging. Mussorie which is a hill station like Darjeeling is far too backward. Hardly any good schools and no colleges at all. Only Dehra Dun has some good schools like the famous Doon School - unfortunately it was founded by a famous Bengali too. So show the resources and the revenue. Even setting up a Small Scale Industry requires lots of clearance from the government and proper feasibilty study by the bank and government before they can extend some loan as part of the project cost rest 25 to 30% you have to get the money from your pocket. The same is true for a State or a district too. Man, I tell you we are living in a free economy. No more socialist set up. You wish to get your own ship you must learn to sail on your own steam, don't expect your Daddy to fund it for whatever reason, be it pleasure or commercial. Although some politicians were thinking that by having small states they can keep them weak so that the Centre remains strong, much on ther principle of divide and Rule adopted for small kingdoms in British India. But these small states are unable to fight the Naxalites, since police force is inadequate. Very Small states are bad for India.

I think we are making our own meanings on the subject. Can we understand this in the context that, at first China is claiming Sikkim on regular basis, second most of the Indian don't know about the politics being played for sikkim at international level, third this article insists us to love, respect and involve these people in our day-to-day system as much as other Indians are involved.

Baoji or bibiji, a headline is for making an article attractive enough to read. Your comments have made it a successful headline. It could be misleading alright but it compelled you to read and it's work is done. As for the piece, I agree, it is amatuerish. A diary of some sort. It doesn't reveal how one travels to Nathu La or where does one put up? Which is the best season to travel? How much does it cost? Do you get booze there etc? It could have been more informative.

Stay in Gangtok and there is a process to file an application to climb further over to Tsongmo lake. You will need to book a local SUV. If you go through travel agents including stay in Gangtok, they will take care of the application which is verified by our Army post. Sikkim rum is very famous in the country so enjoy your drink there. Avoid drink when climbing up to Tsongmo. May is the best season to visit if you wanted to go up 14K feet than just stay in Gangtok and enjoy your rum ;-) Hope that helps.

I would credit the author for nationalist feelings than smell fish. Ive visited Sikkim as recently as May this year. I wasnt too convinced why Cox&Kings included Sikkim in my itenarary to Darjeeling but trust me guys this is some place you should never miss. Weve lost major portion of Kashmir to Pakkis but we must challenge the Chineese with full might on their stake on Sikkim. BTW, Gangtok is more beautiful place than Darjeeling which belongs to WB. Ive to Tsongmo lake further up close to Nathulla border, a place called Baba mandir thats well gaurded by India army. Every tour operator includes Tsongmo lake along with Darjeeling which is a good way of promoting tourism which would then become difficult for China to stake claim.

I only believe the author is expressing this view than cast doubts on Sikkim's nationality.

In these hard times, this poor person is giving a simple message which we should look with a open and positive.
