Middle class and Oil Crisis
by Aviram Vijh on May 26, 2008 05:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Why does the middle class and the so called car owner has to suffer?

what does the writer mean tax the car owner since they can afford a car? nonsense...tax the car owner to make good roads or reduce pollution or fund public transport projects...u cant damned tax the car owner additionally(over the high income tax and service tax) for funding the loan waiver etc.!!?

u give me effcient public transport, i'll gift my car to u.

The govt does not do much for usage of green fuels, when all buses in delhi have turned to CNG, what the hell are other cities doing?? waiting for apocalypse day? What is happeing to the nuclear deal...our best scientists work in the US bcoz they pay them 15 k after doing a PHD?

Tax the rich, eat some and distribute some among the poor so that they remain satisfied with the tit bits and no one works towards improving them. Plus give reservations to the poor so that they are assured of berths in educational institutes and jobs and so they turn lethargic as they are virtually assured a seat and a job!

Crap, it is a crime to be a middle class person here...the govt only works towards trying to woo the poor people(due to the vote bank). Yours and my woes dont count as they are secondary things!

There is nothing called population control and corruption control.. laws are so weak that people do anything they want to.

Very well said friend !!! But the politicos need only the votes from the poor people. B'cos only they go out to vote. You and I do not go and vote. We would rather enjoy a holiday at home. Are you asking me why ? B'cos there is no politician worth voting for. What do we do ?

In todays world no one wants to move in Public Transport. Reason Time. After spending 10-12 hrs in the workplace a man wants to go for his house ASAP. America spends billions of dollars in Researches of other sources even if they are not having Brains. In India our Scientist & Engineers are considered the best but the Government doesn't do anything for R&D. Jatropa was developed in India. But americans have already started planting it in Huge Scale. In India we are still wondering will it be a sucess or a failure. Come on man success doesn't come without trying. It is a nearly time that we should start searching some another forms of energy or the time for suffering shall soon be there

feel the pinch
by ratheesh on May 26, 2008 05:11 PM  Permalink

2. Make the owners of cars(B S Raghavan ) feel the pinch.

If he got money enough to buy a car, he must have commitment enough to contribute to the nation's good. The government should feel no hesitation to impose an annual differential petroleum surcharge of, say, Rs 5,000 crore, on his cars. With his cars on the road, this will yield crores to the public exchequer.

OIL CRISIS
by A Roy on May 26, 2008 05:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I slightly defer with him in few points:
1. You can not negotiate with oil countries and at the same time be a part of the buyer's cartel. It is not easy to burgain from oil producing countries now a days for a no. of reasons. Example- Iran, how it deviated from the pre-negotiated price level with India wrt
Iran-Pak-India gas pipeline. However, a hard try can be done. If unsuccessful, make a buyer's cartel- including exorbitant price of food-stuff, clothings and other essentials to oil producing countries in one way and cartailing home demand on the other in the sector which are less growth oriented.
2. Cartailing demand on relatively less producing sectors include restrict govt. vehicles, promote public transport systems, imposition of cess on new buys is a good suggestion, give incentives to industries using alternate source of energy.
3. Use of Renewable source of energies and promote them. Use of such energy in India is very scanty. Wind and sun are two sources that we can look at. God give some good wisdom to Red to consent on 123 agreement for extensive use of atomic energy from meagre nothing now (1%)> But all these infrastructure will not give you result immediately. Even If sincerely started,we have to wait for 10 years.
3. Many govt sectors and PSUs offer car loan and also reimburse petrol prices. Moratorium for this may be a good act because petrol prices used by the employee is indirectly a burden to Govt. This is a time when people have to show patriotism. On

Exactly I will gift my car too, if I have public transport comparable to Japan & Europe. While I had to own a car in US when I was there I didn't buy one when I was Japan.
With these kind of ideas from IAS officers like Raghavan it is no wonder the Petrol prices and taxation regime in India is in such a BAD shape... wake up from Raj period officer

I am shocked to come to now that Govt is selling petrol @ Rs.16 loss per ltr, it is big wonder, people are starving for food since the high inflation, govt is giving subsidy for upper middle Class and Upper Class!!!

people should have Social Resposibility and should reduce the use of petrol as much as possible

make a correction.. govt. is selling 25 Rs higher. actual petrol price after processing and everything don't cost more than 32. it';s the Govt. Tax that makes it's 50 Rs/li.
now why govt. don't want to give up their fat money making taxes? don't they have social responsibility?

that govt tax feeds the nation...every country in the world imposes tax on oil...since in india there is high rate of tax evasion...the govt taxes oil bcoz no 1 can evade it...

i own a vehicle...i knw we already pay high income tax....but there is no way govt can drasticallt reduce tax on oil...even in the US the taxes are quite high (not to mention that income tax is much higher)

Price of fuel in India was the highest in the world even before the Iraqi invasion. It is the pricing mischief played by the various finance ministers that has made the Indian oil prices to remain the highest in the world.America imports oil from the middle-east and Africa and the total accumulated distance between is about 54000 kms,and the accumulated trade distance for the same oil between New Delhi and midde-east,Africa and Malaysia is 39,000 kms.Still, the prices of fuel are way higher than prices of fuel in USA.It just beats any one's common sense and makes us understand how these politicians are bleeding our economy.

The usual babu talk
by Bodhi D on May 26, 2008 04:52 PM  Permalink

Another example of our bureaucrats coming up with short term silly suggestions like banning futures trading, tying up with Chavez etc. typical thinking that has stymied our agricultural markets and our private oil retailing companies. I think it is good that oil prices are being driven up, if it is being driven up artificially it will be a bubble that will break and deliver much lower rates in the future else it will drive innovation to find alternate sources of fuel. It is better that the world learns to live with lesser fossil fuels faster.
