Every business person (CEOs of multinationals) and their media cronies go ga ga about transformation much like the yester-year BJP slogan "India shinning". These guys talk thru their hats without any data or stats on how economic disparity has increased since liberalization. Liberatization, free-market and structural adjustments are failed policies perpetrated by western instituions (world bank and IMF) to dominate markets in third world countries. These policies created havoc in latin America and now impacting India. No one quotes the 830plus million Indians subsisting on less than Rs.20 a day (thats a whopping 77% of the population!). Opening the stock market to FIIs has lead to rampant speculative capital inflow, which is now flying out of India distressing the life of even the middle class investors. Let CEOs with all honesty answer whether there has been any trickling effect in these 18years of liberalization!

what well said? now it 77% how much was it before 1991. I'm sure it must have been above 85%...we can talk about all negative for 100 years. See the positive side of things & see how we can utlide the opportunity presented to us...

Indra Nooyi is a nobody !

She was a below avg candidate when she passed out of IIM.

It is a pure business trick from Pepsico !

When they started facing revolt against cola in India, they were worried abt losing their big business.

So, they decided to play with the Indian sentiment. Appoint an Indian that too a woman.

Thatz it. Nothing grt about her.

Forgetting her originality, she is trying to preach us. What a pity?!

For sure, she looks like a dumb lady !!

The rural poor
by VENURAJA Bowenpalle on Jul 15, 2008 11:00 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

So many people in urban areas think that India is mired in poverty in rural areas while only a few cities are growing at a faster rate.
While rural poverty is a realty it is not in the state as depicted by some.
Look at the vehicles purchased (two wheelers) in villages including tractors purchased. Look at the cell phones these villagers are using. See the type of education they could offord now.

In a word I can say that number of people deep poverty has been greately reduced. The lifestyle of small farmers changed.

You can not say India is at the same situation as it was just 10 years ago.

The money that has been coming in to the country from software, from expatriates working in the gulf countries,USA and Europe
tremendously increased. It has gone beyod anyones imagination.

Those people who say that opportunities are held hostage by forward casts should look at their colleagues in the office !
who are they?
For example I could see most of my colleagues (software) come from such casts as agricultural labour, fishermen, weavers and Muslims.

Casts of landlords, warrior casts and tribes, brahmins are so less that I have to search for them and to my surprise most of them (earlier landlords for example)are found among drivers, bus conductors, taxi men, poultry farm owners or cleaners. Brhamis among software are there but insigficant comapred to that so called lower casts or BC.
Poverty's basics are changed. India is changed.
don't speak old rheterics.

U r wrong venuraja.

In my office (at Bangalore), 80% of the employees are Brahmins. U know why, most of the managers who are in a position to appoint people are Brahmins.

This biased nature is there in language also.

I can quote eg from my office itself.

Earlier we had a Tamil HR manager, he used to appoint all Tamilians.

Later a Telugu fellow came. Now, he is appointing only Telugu speaking people.

This sick minded people are always there.

Transformation
by Rohit Agarwal on Jul 15, 2008 10:58 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The transformation began in 90s with emergence of free market economy, dilution of political and economical boundries. Now countries who always stood with their hand open to receive aids are contributing to global economy. Lets not take any country as referal and bench mark for our preformance or growth. We have our need, compulsions and resources. This give us our identity. With time every thing changes, it is the matter of interpretation, what we label it as good or bad. Thing will keep on changing in future and every thing has it lifecycle.

If it is Indira Nooyi's rise to CEO of PEPSICO, she deserves the recognition she is getting now. But her speech is too optimistic when we look at the current world scenario. The world is not the same as it was in 2007. US is in deep trouble. Large Corporates are restructuring, cutting jobs and closing operations. Pity that she is at the helm of one of them. So is the much talked after CEO of Citi bank Mr. Vikram. They are all not that comfortable in that positions I can bet. The smart US Mgmt just handed over the baton to some Indian genius to see the fun. He knew US is in a big mess and their future is bleak. Now India will also see this slowdown. It takes less time to melt down this India shining story. The 'signs' are visible now. Or it will become clear in 2008 - 2010. Her speech has less relevance now.

Mr. ajay prasher, why are you wallowing in self-pity? Have you heard of business women like Ms. Anu Aga, Ms.Kiran Majumdar Shaw, Ms. Sumati Morarjee, Ms. Sarayu Dartarey, etc in India? We even had a muslim women (ms. Fatima Beevi) as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India and as Governor of a State.

There are opportunities galore for any one with talent in India. No one stops you from developing.

As long as we have the capacity to absorb the unhealthy junk foods, the obsolete technologies, buy the fuel inefficient cars and be a dumping ground for most western rubbish, I suppose that is our politicians and economists idea of development and transformation
