Rediff should interview the President of OLPC India
by ravi suri on Nov 04, 2008 10:38 PM  Permalink

Its a great project and it will be very helpful if rediff interviewed the President of OLPC India and asked hard questions and shared their plans with us.. How can we make India a nation of modern skils without learning on screen? Have you heard of anyone in offices using pens any more?

This guy clearly is unaware of the world.. There are no $100 laptops in Africa that can connect to the internet without some supervision and its unlikely they can be used for teh purpose refered to given teh state of internet speed in Africa..

Corporations use connected laptops and their employees cannot downoad any porn not because technology does not allow, rather technologies offer choices to block unacceptable content.

What's good for goose can also be good for gander..

There is no way these laptops can be used for anything inappropriate unless everyone wants them to be used that way..

One step forward...
by sachin sharma on Aug 16, 2008 03:22 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a great opportunity for the following simple reasons:
1. The tie-up for implementation and distribution is being done through private partners (and not central gov.). This means a more seamless, efficient execution, and a proper channeling of any voluntary education related contributions
2. Imagine the extent of involvement education will have once computers are included. This is already shown by an increase in first graders where this was introduced
3. With our high penetration of mobile infrastucture, wi-fi should not be an issue, plus this allows a wireless LAN, enabling students/teachers to exchange assignments
4. Given our country's inherent acumen for technology, this will definitely help generate interest in kids at a primary education level

The same used to be said about mobile phones some years back. Now, growth in mobile connections is nearly 50% per annum. Its defintely a great step, and should be encouraged by the govt.

More games
by balamurugan g on Aug 07, 2008 10:57 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

You would find more games than actual work going on if every kid gets such laptops.
Many people went to computer classes because of the following reasons;
a. Air conditioned room
b. Games

These laptops are good for working under a tree.. they are dust proof, water proof, shock proof, can be read under direct sunlight.. they are not ordinary laptops.. and kids find them a great tool for learning

every time an article is posted in rediff, huge comments come. they show that the youth has so many ideas. but i feel that all of us talk big but dont do anything to help the cause for the country, we spent lakhs and crores in our marriages which is a waste, wonder if we could save money there to use it in the betterment of society, I love my country but feel that there is a lot of show off, we will keep talking and arguing in rediff and other websites but wil never do anything for thecountry except blaming the illiterate government that ppl like us have chosen

Foolish Idea
by boby mathew on Aug 07, 2008 04:25 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a foolish idea.First government should improve the standard of education. Our education system is around 20 years back.Do we want all students to become an IT professional. We don't have even good building for running schools.Students from the rural area don't have electricity in their home what they will do with the laptop.I think giving a laptop in the early stages of their carrier development will kill their creativity.
