It is a fact that the quality of infrastructure and cost of service is far better in Public sector services. The only problem is the personnel handling the services and dealing with the consumers. They are not courteous, lack dedication, sincerity and commitment. If only the man power in Public Sector services could be trained and motivated to give the best quality of service to consumers, Public sector can easily beat the private sector who are only pretending to be courteous but always targeting to loot the consumers.
It is not a question of private or state owned services what an average consumer looks. It depends whether Public Sector or State enterprises are quick enough to change themselves to market needs. SBI and other Public Sector banks are still preferred by middle class because their hidden costs are nil. Given equal fares, Public airlines are still preferred over Private Airlines because of Punctuality, safety etc. Post Office are still preferred for many banking services because of personal touch. Railways are better choice than private carriers. salem stainless steel is preferred over other steel because of its quality. AIIMS and the like of hospitals are still preferred because of its quality, prices & not going for unwanted syrgeries-common in private hospitals.BSNL broadband speed is much better than others.News value is more in DD News than other channels who are sensationalizing and serving all sort of non sense than news.It is hightime that Public enterprises shall reorient themselves and be more consumer concious.
I don't agree that middle-class consumers are exercising choice by value. Because value is a very abstract term. In a booming economy (at least for the middle, upper middle-classes) it's what catches their mindshare that decides which product they go for. Yes, the erstwhile govt. run services and products have a negative image because they have a legacy to deal with. However, the private sector is cashing in on the neo purchasing power by using marketing gimmicks rather than real value as such. The average consumer all over the world is a fool and that is what the private sector has been exploiting.

Doesnt matter. In the first case you will be asked to keep updating some documentation once in a week. Rest of the time you can eat Piza and be happy. In the second case you need to sit in front of a computer and monitor the some data for a US organisation. Take ur pick!
You are trying to cover too many points.. what exactly is the above article trying to convey ? Consumer activism in this country is non-exitent and neither is any informed consumer behavior. Market is still governed by supply side economics and liquidity. People who have money to splurge will splurge on even inanities; and people that are limited by budget will go for whatever meets their priorities and requirements.
Interesting subject for me is the eg. of airlines. With many decades in the field, I would like to add that along with price & service, safety record also plays an important role. When you reduce the price below a certain level, it is obvious that somewhere corners will be cut. So while you assess the value for money aspect ensure that quality in maintinance, training etc are met to prescribed standard. Ideally it should be well above the prescribed minimum level.
