Differential fares
by Anurag Dangi on Mar 07, 2007 02:01 PM  Permalink

This is a bad idea. Its like cheating people. Why should we pay more because the airport cant handle traffic?
Airport taxes have been already increased to cover expenses for increasing the capacity of airports .
I would suggest that they should not increase fare for peak hours. rather they should decrease fare for non-peak hours.
People who can travel during non-peak hours will do so and enjoy low rates.
Others would pay the same and travel during peak hours. This will also reduce congestion.

Charging more from peak time travellers is rubbish idea.

The pupose will be defeated
by Debu Bhattacharyya on Mar 07, 2007 02:00 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The purpose of imposing these differential rates was to entice the airlines to adopt their flight timings to non-peak hours. Sadly, after this has been announced, it seems that the airlines will not change their schedules at all, but would rather continue to fly at the same (existing) timings, with the burden of the added pricing being passed onto the customer. It does seem extremely likely that the actual point of this, as planned, would be defeated.

But then%u2026wasn%u2019t this expected? I feel it was. The Govt failed to understand that in their (apparently noble) move to penalize airline companies (operating at peak hours), they have only created a situation where the airline companies will now penalize the customers (with increased fares). Any person with a minimum level of intelligence would have been able to foresee this, but apparently, the MCA and the DGCA couldn%u2019t.

If there are airports that are already traffic-congested at peak hours, the Govt could just have refused to allow any more Arrivals/Departures from those airports%u2026simple! Any existing or new operator could simply have been told that due to the peak-hours being already over-congested, no more licenses would be given in those peak hours%u2026that%u2019s all! This would automatically have forced new license-seekers to move to less-congested timings%u2026why do you need to announce an idea, which you think is incredibly intelligent, only to see it flop a few weeks later? The Govt surely would not have needed to adapt to Differential Landing Rates to ensure this!

Earlier, in an effort to reduce %u2018traffic congestion%u2019 on telephone signals, we had full STD rates in the daytime, with half-rates, 1/3rd rates, and 1/4th rates at other times of the day? Remember what happened? Hardly anyone called in the daytime (except business calls); and when you wanted to call in the night, the %u2018routes%u2019 used to be perennially occupied. Did the situation serve anyone?

you are absolutely right, Debu. Simple things have been complecated now. And yes, I agree to the differential STD rates earlier...which did not help anyone...

I welcome the idea...
by S N on Mar 07, 2007 02:00 PM  Permalink

Yes, it is there everywhere today.. take STD, take movies which cost less on week days, take big bazar which costs less on wednesday... this way the traffic will be balanced... as anyway the rates r going high..so we can atleast save money by flying non peak hours if there is no unrgency.... those who will fly peak hours by paying more will do so only if ther get returns by doing so... i welcome

Peak and off-peak faresq
by V Sudarshan on Mar 07, 2007 01:59 PM  Permalink

It will definitely solve the problem, but yes as usual the AAM JANTA who has been the midst of all this sandwitch between the providers and the government who will have to pay the brunt for it. Why do people travel in peak hours, so that one can reach the desired destination by some logical time so that he can start work when that city's people start work, what is the point in leaving from say mumbai to delhi at 10, reach there at 12, reach your office at 2 and then start work that day?? its absurd. nobody can tell what has to be done for this, but can the airlines and the govt sit down, think and come to a logical step than some illogical or absurd decision that are being taken now??

Peak and Off-peak fares
by Alok Gupta on Mar 07, 2007 01:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a 100% rubbish idea. By imposing such silly 'creative' ideas, the government is trying to dictate terms on the timing one would fly out (remember .... earlier there were full, third, half and fourth rates for STD calls). No one wanted to speak in day hours and in evening hours the lines were jammed. It was no good at all to anyone. Now it is all unified tarrif and that simple.

Each passenger has his or her own prefered time of flying that best suits the needs and thier own time table related to work or liesure. Let the airlines and the passenger demand determine this dynamics. Government should rather focus on improving basic infrastructure which is so sick (some developments are visible though in some airports). A lot needs to be done to accomodate the ever increasing number of flights and passenger traffic and the government should make fast developments to reduce air congestion which is a waste of fuel (a non-renewable energy source) and adds to pollution. If you change fare, the low fare timings will become jammed up instead of the high fare time slot. It will be the same scenario at the end of the day.

Quite good proposal
by Rashmi Dubey on Mar 07, 2007 01:49 PM  Permalink

STILL PROPOSAL FRUITFUL TO LARGE EXTENT..Because large % of travellers are NON-BUSINESS ...SO certain Flights can be scheduled for such Travellers ,,they will still 1. save LOT OF TIME,,and STILL 2.it will be far comfortable compared to Railways 3.People can attend their JOBS in day time & can slip in time saving 1 day 'LEAVE' and next morning they will be very much at their Home/Destination and whole day will be available to them...

M'am if u ever get to travel to any of the developed countries, u'll find that similar mechanisms r applied while attempting decongestion. These people who r making such policies r mostly qualified civil servants who come in thru tough selection procedure (u wud understand if somebody u know has cleared UPSC)...and most of the times they r equipped better to take such decisions.....the govt , be it UPA or NDA or any other, just facilitates such introductions if it is not averse to new ideas..... Till the time u don't have a killer solution (& usually there aren't many).....u need to keep on taking small positive steps......& this is one. The effectiveness remains to be seen...but a positive move nonetheless !

In this age of exam papers leakage, nobody is trustworthy. God frobid this doesn't happen to you. A son trying to fly back home fast due to his father's illness, or a patient needed to be flown from one place to another for treatment, during peak hours, how will he bear the cost??? There are places where it is not safe travelling on roads at night, with young women, for them, this is a bullshit idea.

The government is innefficient in creating new infrastructure. But they are very efficient in taxing the people...do u expect us to appluad the government. Prices of all commodities have doubled but our pay/salary remains stagnant except for the call center people.

No way
by Ashish patidar on Mar 07, 2007 01:38 PM  Permalink

Certainly not.. Government should look at the infrastructure that is available at the airports.. It sucks. And this tax is not going to solve the problem any way...whosoever can fly at odd times (less peak hours) does so at least after oe bad incidence at the airports. Governement should try to better the infrastructure so that people suffer less at the airports..

Definately in India Infrastructure needs much improvement...but these things take substantial time....while this Proposal can be implemented by govt & airlines rather quickly...it will save people Money also....
