Very good article...on Reservation
by wise donkey on Apr 27, 2006 02:35 AM  Permalink

Mr. Ramanan,
You spoke my mind.
That was a wonderful article.
Yeah, frustration mounts on people who slog themseleves to see themselves somewhere in life. And behold the reservation gets them thinking, well things could have been better if I was a backward class lifer.Yeah, what has reservation done to our country
1) Quota for Engineering, medical colleges at almost whopping 50%
2) They come and they exist during the first semester
3) They fail to cope up and drop out during the second
4) That medical seat goes to someone who could pay lakhs of rupees to get a degree, which ofcourse gets reimbursed in dowry. Who cares.Someone should. We should.
It is time, country puts behind reservations and move up towards economic growth and development and positions given purely on merits.
Its time all of us wake up.
Wake up before its too late yet again
Jai Hind

Well Said
by Aditya on Apr 27, 2006 02:24 AM  Permalink

Well said Sir. I believe all educated Indians honestly support your ideas. It's a shame on leaders like Arjun Singh and parties like Congress who have been using reservations for their vote bank politics.

One much worse situation is when a person belonging to a backward caste changes his religion from Hinduism to Chrisitianity, he still keeps his reservation quota. It does not make sense since there is no caste system in Christianity, and all reservations are purely based on caste.

I personally know a lot of my classmates (belonging to the so called backward communities) during my undergrad who used their government scholarships for luxuries like cell phones. They were in a better position, financially, than myself. One much worse example is that we used to have separate quota of books (supplied by the Govt.) in the library. None of the OC guys were allowed to borrow them. Even none of those guys belonging to the backward communities used to make use of those books, because most of them open their books one day before the exams.

Quota is tantamount to Jizyah Tax
by Rajesh. R on Apr 27, 2006 02:21 AM  Permalink

In a democracy - it is common practice that the majority rule, and minority have rights. That is acceptable. In India - we are yet to find a system that represents the majority, while protecting the minority. We have a system that enables the minority community to punish the majority in the form of quotas. If the minority votes were fractured like that of the pluralistic majority in India, would the politicians consider them as their special interest? Probably not! It is been 400 years since the moghuls excercised authority over bulk of India - yet we are still in system that follows the moghul rule of law. Yes folks - we still have to pay Jizyah (A Tax imposed on non-muslims for letting them live under a moghul rule). Now the Brits have come and gone, and then we had 60 years of mis-rule by the congress and other leftist regimes who are bent on discriminating the majority in the form of Quota system! Are we awake yet? Or,are we just roll over and play dead? We have paid enough-to the moghuls, to the Brits, and now to the not so hidden agenda of mullahs and the congress. At least - you educated masses-go out and vote these pinkos and mullahs out of power next time.Jizyah indeed

Quota: Cure worser than disease
by subhash sirur on Apr 27, 2006 02:20 AM  Permalink

Cure : Govt aided compulsory education.
The Disease : Indian Politicians.

50 years of Govt apathy towards the poor and the down trodden.A cosmetic approach towards improving their condition and well being.Time and again,at the time of the elections, the sky is promised.Next five years the politicians are busy with improving their condition and wellbeing. How shameless can they get.The Congress Govt and athat includes the Congrss President, the PM,Arjun Singh are out to destroy the country on the basis of caste and creed.Instead of attempts to bring people together, they are encouraging division.Any attempt to divide the country should be treated as TREASON and the persons responsible should be prosecuted.Thes proplr are out to emulate V.P.Singh.

Cudos to the Author
by Manoj K on Apr 27, 2006 02:05 AM  Permalink

For putting the truth in clear words for even a dumb person to understand the reality. But I am not sure if India is ever going to have another SARDAR PATEL to build a stronger country and a wish of a stronger statesman will remain. I think even Dr. Ambedkar wouldnt have dreamed that such a generation-long label would be pasted to these sections of the society which he intended to remove from them instead by bringing them into streamline. Well all credit goes to.......What I fear that one-day our country will become like a typical Indian Railway Train with 16 out of 20 Coaches as RESERVED and 3 Coaches for the GENERAL (Remember how people travel in those crowded coaches) and 1 PANTRY Coach serving only the RESERVED coaches.
GOD BLESS INDIA

Just a say
by Sriram on Apr 27, 2006 01:57 AM  Permalink

God has not shown the difference, and why should we?
I would suggest we to oppose this with a movement and bring a full stop for this reservation madness going on in India. students are the best rawmaterial for this task and I would really appreciate if someone of us could start this movement.

All The Best.
Come, lets all be a part of Developed India by fighting for independence once again

Jai Hind.

regarding article Cure worse than disease!
by Srinivasan on Apr 27, 2006 01:54 AM  Permalink

Hi Ramanan
"Quota: A cure worse than the disease" Its an excellent article written by you. In this context I have few doubts.
1. Have you been only to USA or any other countries where you have seen different cultures etc.,?
2. Indian society is a closed society and the world doesn't know about our CULT ure...:-)
3. Forget about the pledge, just tell frankly how much time in a day will you be thinking about our country rather than thinking about your personal career and IT politics within your organization...

I will catch you later

Vinod Ramanna's article: Cure worse than disease
by Ajay Dighe on Apr 26, 2006 11:50 PM  Permalink

Vinod has rightly pointed out what we call in Gujarat as
"dukhe pet ane kute mathu" literally meaning pain is in stomach, but
cure is being done for head. It was a real frustrating feeling when my
friend who happen to be Scheduled Caste got in to Computer Science
course at University while I was with better percentage than him, was
awaiting in electrical engineering. That was the first time in my life, I
realized all are NOT born equal. Well, then I said, perhaps India is not
a right place for me. Vinod said is so true. Positive affirmation is the
policy in USA. Many disadvantaged classes exist here.
Especially Afro Americans who were slave in early history of America.
US is apologetic about that, but no reservation today for the slavery
their earlier generations had done in past. I am just venting out, but
be sure that thousands of young engineers / doctors are frustrated in
India because of unjust reservation policy for educational institutes,
jobs, promotions, If Ram Vilas and other guys were at power they
would have introduced reservation even in Infosys and Satyam.
I bet that, then these companies would not remain world class.

Reservations - A tool 'lazy' politicians use
by Vinod Dhall on Apr 26, 2006 10:49 PM  Permalink

There is an underlying issue at play here.
Resorting to "reservations to exploit Vote Banks" speaks of tremendous short-sightedness and even laziness on the part of Arjun Singh and his cohorts. He needs to work hard to make the "cake bigger" - establish more institutions to meet the exploding needs of a country that is gallopinhg at the rate of 8% pa. The votes then would be automatic.
Arjun Singh is really out of sync with the "Indian Reality" as VP Singh and Manohar Joshi learnt at their cost, albeit at a cost to the country - we were all diverted.
