I just have one question to all the ITES bigwigs and to Mr.NASSCOM. Would they be bold enough to make their sons/daughters to work as associates in any BPO in India? I dont think so. Indoan BPO's are sweat shops....period. And i say this from experience.
I just wanted to share my comment with your readers. Even after 7 years of existence, the salaries in BPOs are no where comparable to the IT sector. This has remained a thorny issue, and companies are not opening their mouth in this regard! Working in nights is not a joke! Compensation must be on Par with the IT sector. What is the great Nasscom doing on that? I have seen several editions of ITES big wigs meet on TV channels, but none talk about the compensation aspect of it! Common ITES walas, dont be a hypocrite. Let's accept it. We are glorified slaves of the 21st century.
Viewing all my friends perception by now I feel the report is true and the first to bring awareness to others. Following this report may stop brain drain inside our borders. Students get into the illusion of wide pink career which does not exist in most of the cases. Perception of labour law implementation may not be viable at all job related issues as is service industry and has to match certain norms drawn by goverment. So awareness may be the tool to stop this illusion and can be of benefit to country and future generation.
Really surprised to read that such a respectable body has opined / compared an entire industry as Roman slave ships.....
I have been in call centres / BPO for almost 9 years now. I come from the hospitality industry and I can compare BPOs to the hospitality industry .....
Hotels - minumum of 12-14 hour shifts. Break shifts are quite common.
I wuld be lucky if I got 4 offs in a month and be able to spend time with my family on festivals.
Hotels are not desk jobs. You have to be physically fit to stand for ~8 hurs a day
Guests to a hotel, hardly respect you as an individual.
Bosses have the same philosophy, deliver or move out (Unions are for non mgmnt staff)
For women employees, sexual harassment are a common occurence (by bosses and guests)
Girls work in night shifts in hotels too.
every movement is monitored, through access cards and CCTVs in non - guest areas. BPO - most firms work on a 5 day week schedule (40-45 hours /week)
More time for myself and family. By turn, most employees are able to spend festivals with their family.
Sexual harrasment / escapades happen in call centre, but is it onlt in call centres or it happens in every industry.

Sorry to say, But a person with no backbone would like to do such stuff be it in hotel industry or in a BPO. If this is what u hav to do to get successful in life. May the great lord save you...
Mr Kiran Karnik is in fools paradise to generalise and claim when he challenges that all is well with BPO employment. Just because a handful of BPOs (negligent percentage) are good employers, does not mean he can categorise the entire lot into the same bracket. Most of the Employees are indeed slaves as mentioned by the said institute. The yougsters have no clue of what is in store for them with regards to their future. The hire and fire policy is already in practice with most BPOs though illegally. The benefits are the whims and fanciies of the owners. No proper Leave (Sick, casual or Holdiays)and no Overtime payment and shift allowance for night shift duties. The basic salary is rock bottom to save on PF etc. The employees are packed as sardines into a Toyota Qualis with females squeezed in between males. The list is voluminous to quote. If this is what he calls a better employment. GOD save BPO employees
Hey guys, changes and improvements are welcome, but if you dont perfomr, no one will give you business and iNDIA WOULD BACK TO 80 and 70 ERA. so is that what we would like, no and i am sure. but you cant degrade them by such comments. if you babus cant work beyond a page a day and those rich fat kids who need to be helped to burp, sorry times changing and and has changed. some companies would always be crappy and need to pull up or lock shop..simple as that, but you cant say that for all of them
