Paul's case is a typical case of a bikini, it hides more than it reveals, at least on the basis of this article. Paul was not exactly charitable when he said that Indian managers have cocoon mentality. After all Paul too has Indian blood and comes from the same cocoon as everybody else does; as proven by the fact that when it came to the crunch, even great Paul dithered; achieving something like a billion dollar plus only, against a target of four billion dollars.
He could be similarly compared to another of Indian icon, Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin made unimaginable amount of money; and was supposed to achieve nothing less than a World Cup for India. What he achieved instead was a few Hero Cups, if at all on his own. Excessive Hero worshipping has been unfortunately a bane of Indian society. Over indulgence in mediocre Sania Mirza and Kartikeyan are other cases which readily come to mind.
Wipro is a system / process driven organisation and no longer a home bred entity. It is in the interest of someone like Azim Premji, that he brings in fresh blodd to drive future growth. In another perspective, the immense contribution of some one like paul need not be trumpeted, it is available to see in a very transparent and creditable manner. Infy is a more employee based organisation with the promoters still clinging around. If you were to ask the question of who after nandan or pai then the answers are limited. Infy is a partnership firm in that sense with Generals wanting to die in their boots bcoz they know not what they will do outside the system!
This is really a regular, inevitable event in a typical Indian Lala mind set companies. The big question is really - - Can India produce big & truly global organizations? - Can Indian companies think global and act on it too? - Can the dream of becoming a Global consulting firm be realised with a Lala mindset. - Can Indian companies digest Process reengineering, Management changes, evolution, creative strategies.
Surely it can happen, Equity/Share Holding distribution pattern like that of Infosys helps to take on the above mentioned challenges. But the situation also asks for a much needed reform in the management mindset, which got to be more open towards innovation & creativity and truly global.
It doesn't matter if its Wipro, Satyam, HCL, Infy or TCS. The word still exists. Bureaucracy. The attrition rate at the higher management level is because of this. This article is well written. Appreciate the columnist.
Contributions of Mr.Vivek Paul have certainly put lot of light and brightened the name ,fame and coffers of WIPRO but the real guiding light is the Great Azim Premji. It is free hand given by him with eyes kept wide open to see all minute development. It is his leadership which has shaoed Wiplro as it stands today.
Men maycome and men may go ,Premji's WIPRO would grow under Premji and his loyal team.
