MTNL triband expensive and not worth buying
by Atik Naik on Aug 31, 2005 01:59 PM  Permalink

MTNL triband expensive and not worth buying.Who would want to buy MTNL triband with limited download or pay additional charges for download . When one can get 128 kbps unlimited for Rs 500/- per month and 256 kbps unlimited download for Rs 795/- per month provided by SIFY Broadband.

People should compare the internet tariffs before buying.MTNL should reduce there tariff and make there packages compatitive with SIFY Broadband or TATA INDICOM etc.

bsnl broadband ?
by Vinay Naik on Aug 31, 2005 10:06 AM  Permalink

Strange to see no mention of bsnl broadband. They have a scheme where you pay Rs.250 per month with a download limit of 400MB, probably the best available (but ofcourse not available where MTNL operates).

Is it Really So ??
by Lalit on Aug 30, 2005 12:40 PM  Permalink

When you say cheaper yes cheaper than before but still very expensive compared to the world. Better ? Well i dont what do you mean by better.MTNL does not give the promised bandwidth to the end user. Nor does most of the companys.Forget the Big & classy ads on the billboards. The reality is my previous RELIENCE (formally BSES) connection uses to give me a download speed of 3-4 KB/s. Broadband means you should able see streaming Vids for which you should have connection with at least 200+kb/s speed. But thats just a dream for many yrs to come i feel. Then the most stupid thing is the download limit, its like been given to drive a race car & told dont drive above 40kmph.Thats most absurd.Look a the prices of the connection in the korea.US$32 would give you a at least 1mbps speed in korea.thats approx Rs 1440.Thats what i would be paying for the 512kbps line out here & that too with the stupid download restriction. Broadbands for people who dont check just mails but are here too do some serious surfing, downloading &online gaming.According to me India must be a superpower in software development but as far as CHEAP & FAST internet is concerned it still has a long way to go.

Broadband in India
by sandeep on Aug 30, 2005 12:05 PM  Permalink

Broadband connections are not that much expensive in India, but I dont understand why they dont allow an unlimited downloading uploading like most of the countries have.

500 Mb will not be enough for a person who use his webcam, music and chat. I am sure than even 2 GB will not be sufficient for him.

incomplete article

The article does not mention Bharti Broadband, which is extremely competitive price-wise as well as user experience wise.

How much is the usage??
by Sharad Ohri on Aug 30, 2005 11:49 AM  Permalink

Hi,

It was quite a eye opener article of yours on Broadband. It's good for a person like me who is exploring the option of buying a high end PC for Home.

I have few queries if your next article can cover them or your expert team can answer me personally:

1. How much does one downloads while opening a website, I mean to say how will one know that he has used this much MB & this is left so that one can plan its connection & accordingly go for one?

2. Which are the sites which are heavy on MB download..like a movie or MP3 site.

3. For a professional like me who spents 13 hours in the office & will work on computer on weekends or may be in night, which is the best option, I want to experience good graphics & music while playing 3D games or watching movies or even listening to music?

4. I'm thinking of buying a LCD flat monitor for my PC. Is it advisable to have that because it will dent my budget like hell?

Can anyone answer my queries...

it's still costly
by stevie on Aug 30, 2005 11:41 AM  Permalink

It's still costly in comparison to other asian countries, like for instant taiwan, there you pay Rs.400 per month, and the surfing is unlimited for the entire month and the speed is 2 Mbps.So you cannot say that its cheap in India, its still costly. You also need to see in every other cities in India and not only Mumbai...

Re: Anachronistic

The very notion of having to pay per MB of download is anachronisitc. In this era of broadband, customers should be given the freedom to download as much as they want. How about a flat charge per month for unlimited usage as my ISP does? MTNL is popular, but I feel it has just axed its own foot by this ridiculous pricing per MB of download. Each site is so graphics heavy that the MB's pile up in no time. Tata indicom too isn't any better.

Yes definitely. And, this charging-per-MB is something that is not seen outside India. I don't understand how Indian providers came up with this idea. Definitely, unlimited internet access is the order of the day in the world today. For e.g., in the US, with cable internet connection, I am online 24hrs a day downloading lots of movies and music, and the first-yr special price is just $30. The speeds are fantastic (averaging 500kbps). I don't see any such packages advertised in the so-called "broadband" offers in India now.

Broadband - hidden costs!!
by Madhu Chawla on Aug 30, 2005 10:50 AM  Permalink

Your advertising is fine but you are not doing any good service to public if you are not giving full facts about these service providers. e.g. the Tri-band of MTNL has an unwritten rider to its charges. If you are getting a connection in the middle of a month, you are charged for the whole month, upto 25-28 days extra. And the reason given by their GM, Mr. Dutt and Chief Accts Officer, Mr. Pal is that they have not stabilised their policies to charge proportionately for the billing cycle. And they are passing the buck to each other for taking a decision. Meanwhile, they all say, they are helpless and you have to bear the excess charges, though admittedly unfair.
