meghana should know that these tigers are drugged. visits to the monastery should be boycotted as this is cruelty to animals. there is nothing wonderful about holding a tiger or any other wild animal when it is drugged. the monks obviously make a lot of money out of this nicely commercialised duping!

What was the name of Phantom's island that had all animals - carnivores and grass eaters - living in perfect harmony? Eden?
However I firmly belong to the camp that believes that tigers and humans cannot mingle. He's probably cute and cuddly now, but you have just curbed the natural instincts of a great predator. And that's disgusting - typically what one expects of East Asians / Cantonese derivatives who subjugate everything they do not eat.
For those who say that this is the only alternative to being poached, think again. Can't wild-life sanctuaries (yes, well protected ones do exist) take these animals in? And spare them the torture of appearing cuddly or laying in someone's lap (yuck!)?
This really wasnt too amusing. I say this because , Tiger is by nature a PREDATOR. The very word specifies that it lives in the wild. Its really not a DOG ! :) It definitely mightve been fun being with the cats for some time but then when you see them roaming in the wild ...thats a different experience altogether. My personal verdict - Such places should be banned.

Tell me tejas... the rate at which tigers are bieng poached, will we see a tiger in the wild few years from now?????? i feel this is the last chance to save the tigers from bieng extinct.... by letting it in the wild, you know very well what happens to them .... THEY ARE BIENG POACHED. Tigers are fed meat and not vegetables but the meat is without blood... If we cannot do anything for them, least we can do is to respect others who are struggling to SAVE THESE WONDERFUL CREATURS...... I disagree with your comment that "such places should be banned" these monks have dedicated thier lives to save these creatures from bieng killed, we can surely respect their sentiments and work, what should be banned is poaching and all the zoos not this effort...

I do agree with the last sentence in your paragraph there, I agree that forest laws need to be made stricter. However, i disagree with the major part of the lines above which try to convince that this is a great way to save the creatures.
Let me put my point this way -
Would it be decent for a 40 man to hit on a teenage girl ? :D or would the romance look great on a teenage pair ? This was an example that struck me at this moment. I personally believe that there are things in LIFE, that look great only where they are meant to be.
Tell me one thing - Would you like to see a TIGER, making a kill in the wild , roaming around royally in the wild , OR would you like it to cuddle alongside you , or probably have milk form a nursing bottle ? . I bet you would like the former to happen !
I agree with you that in the current scenario, TIGERS are vulnerable to the poachers that we have in the WILD ..But won't it be a great idea to probably breed tigers artificially so that they are born naturally in the wild and parallely make FOREST rules stricter , probably increase the number of forest ranger patrols in the forest and things allied to it .

You seem to be living in a world of utopia. If only tigers were not killed for their bones, teeth and hair to make human beings more beautiful or increase their lifespan, you could have gone for a safari or taken your kids or grand children to see tigers in the wild! If you feel so strongly about saving these tigers, then why not start a save the tiger campaign and ensure that every tiger on this planet is safe. If people were not so short sighted of being corrupt and allowing poachers to step in and kill these creatures, our world would have been a better place. its time we wake up and smell the coffee. Now dont tell me, trying to save the giant panda is a wrong thing. coz even though they are being artificially bred, the chances of an infant panda survival is very poor. But scientisits are doing everything to save them. Thats why i said, there's a lot more than a 9 to 5 job and very easy to comment while sitting in an office space. What Meghana and her husband did is commendable. I am happy to know people like them exist in this world. Peace!! Tanya Munshi

Thanks Tanya!!!! i am happy to know that people like u exist in this world who appreciate something good and stand by it :) thanks again
tigers are not meant to live like dogs; what do they feed these tigers anyway? vegetables? I think that tigers should be allowed to live a normal life than humans making pets out of them; the most important thing is to protect the species and prevent poaching of tigers.

i believe that poaching should be controlled. the tiger project started in the 70's was a huge success; why not do something of that sort? any animal looks best in its natural environment. i have heard of many americans keeping large carnivores like tigers and pumas as personal pets; would you agree to that as well in the name of conservation? also, what about zoos and circus, where they also keep wild animals? would that also be in the interest of conservation? the truth is that animals raised in this manner are helpless to fend for themselves if introduced back into their natural environment and mostly die. unless we permit wildlife to thrive where they belong, which is in the wild and give them conducive environment (no poaching or human intervention), not much will be achieved. Another thing is that such pet tigers when interbreeding will have such a closed gene pool that soon the offspring will start having genetic defects.

YOu had a smashing honeymoon, I am sure, and the tiger experience must have really made it that much more amazing. That is also the reason you will stoutly defend the position that it is better to have an obedient, dog-like tiger, than a dead tiger.
While these monks are doing their bit for conservation, I am sure, how do you think the tigers become obedient and tame? They are also smacked around a bit, which is not really all conservation, I think. While conservation is a fantastic thing, it is essentially about creating an environment that allows the animal to survive on its own, not creating a spiritual circus.

I completly agree with Meghana. People who write back that tigers are being kept as 'pet dogs' know little about whats happening globally. Its disheartening to know that some people cannot see beyond their own 'little' horizons. This monastry that Meghana and her husband visited has been covered on National Geographic a few months ago. It all began when a local poacher himself, killed the mother but found her cubs. Sita, Thunder and Storm - were the three cubs adopted by the monastry. Had they not adopted them from the poacher (who would have killed them eventually, thank God some good sense prevailed) these cubs would be dead long ago! So think before you guys speak. i have been reading the mail trails for while. i see a point in everyone's argument. But i cant see flexibility in any of you. All of us have one thing in common 'we are tiger lovers'.it shows as we have taken out some time for punching an article from our busy 9-5 schedule.
i am running a tiger conservation society and badly require people who love tigers selflessly.
if you guys intereseted we can work in a direction to protect tigers .

Hi amit,
i really appreciate your willingness to protect the beautiful animal. Instead of just debating over this topic, it would be better if we all come forward and contribute for the conservation of tiger, Iam sampath from Hyderabad and this is my id"sampath22@gmail.com". I would be very glad if i would be of any use in this mission.
What a lovely photo. I wish I could visit this place sometime. At the end of the day, even these big tigers are nothing but overgrown pussy cats. Or so it would deceptively seem.
It shows if human being can be peaceful, animal dont see u as threat and can relax with u. But first one has to be very relaxing and super cool first. I guess it come with long spiritual practice like meditation, sadhana etc..

you are right manoj... we have to be very cool, thats how these monks can control such huge creatures with just a bottle of water... infact there are certain rules that we have to follow if we wanna be with the tigers, like we cannot wear bright color clothes, we have to be very very quiet and morever should have no fear but a lot of affection for them , then alone we can experience such beautiful moments....
