I am presently working as an Equity Research Analyst in New Delhi. I would say that work experience is not necessary before doing MBA but you must have knowledge of what is happening in the corporate world.
Moreover, you must know what is demanded out of your area of preference either marketing or finance or any other discipline.
That is my view and i think i have been successful with that mindset.
It is suggested that one has 1-2 years of work experience prior to joining an MBA. MBA is a skill based degree and it requires certain amount of maturity and work exp prior to taking it up. it becomes much easier for you to come up with innovative solutions in the class room and relate to issues.
why should an indian do MBA as every indian is already very well versed with Mama Bhatija Association/Administration (MBA) and they practice in their every day lives, hence a full fledged MBA?
Well it does totally depend on you, company and of course luck. i didn't get job stright away and My some of the classmate got really good job. Even same happen with my Senior and Junior.
When I have passed my PGDBM with Finance, I was looking for Job. All the finance department of different industry or financial service company rejected me because I had knowledge but I didnt have experience. Even it was too hard to find entry level job in finance field. I was master at the subjects like Investment and Portfolio management, Future and Option Financial management and Management Accounting. I had thorough knowledge of these all subjects but I didnt get good break. And after completing three years of my degree I didnt get any exposure in those areas.
Currently I am in UK. I want to come back in India and I am not sure whether I am going to get job according to my qualification or not though I have three year of experience of different industry in different functional area.
I work as the Program Director for the International College in Mahim, Mumbai - we do offer MBA programmes in affiliation with reputed UK Universities - from my experience must say that getting four or five years on the clock by way of work experience definitely makes sense. The takeaways in terms of value is far greater for the candidate who has the work ex before entering into the MBA. Most US/ UK Universities or at least the better ones insist on work exp - and as fresh bachelors graduates it would be next to impossible to get into a top tier business school.Although in India the custom is to complete all your educational endeavors at one go it definitely would be a viable option for candidates to work just after their Bachelors and then think of an MBA armed with the work exp, good references, contacts etc all of which are necessary for admissions at least to the good schools.
Nice to see lot of people pumping in their veiws.. The issue of discussion is a very vital one, with the boom for MBAs on the rise...
First of all there are advantages if you are a fresher as well if you have a work experience.
I am an MBA student from IBS, Hyderabad. My experience with some of my seniors have suggested that some companies still prefer to take freshers rather than an experienced one, mainly beoz it is very easy to tune the fresher according to the org needs when compared with that of the experienced ppls. TCS was one classic example, who very clearly in their PPT said that they need only freshers..
And advantage of having experience is that you have the negotiating authority when it comes to package. you have the rights to put forth your needs across the table during your interview.!!!
Thus there are equal chances for both.. So ppl dont worry too much on those lines. If you feel you wanna get yourself educated as early as possible. do it.. never delay theese things in life...
