I think work experience prior to MBA course would put you in a position to practically apply the concepts that you learn during MBA with your past work experience. However, what you actually learn during the course may not be directly related the field in which you have worked before. Hence, it all depends on how much time you want to invest in your education years. At the same time, all the premier B schools in the country and even those abroad, take students having minimum 2 yrs of work experience to their credit.
It will defenitely help you if you have work experience before commencing your MBA. Now a days recruiters are looking at experienced professionals and they hire them not necessarily at entry level. If you work experience, you can leverage it during your MBA to take optimum benefit from the program. You will be in an excellent position to relate the theory with your actual experience.
If we compare MBA in India and Europe/US, the later are more comprehensive, rewarding and acknowledged ones. The main reason for this is most of these programs require prior work experience of minimum 2-3 years.
I would suggest you join your field of interest and after gaining some experience can try for MBA.
New Delhi 18 July 2006: Hi Shalini, ur question is not only very relevant but raises important issues related to maagement career planning - there is no doubt work experience provides good opportunity to deal with real life management problems and makes freshers better disciplined, both physically and financially, to become skilled managers, which B schools want - however the big problem with such work is that freshers often tend to be exploited by employers both in terms of low salaries (say 1/4th of a fresh MBA) and lack of freedom viz. very little choice of the type of work and virtually no flexibility in work hours which typically are long (12-14 hours daily) and often extend to the weekend as well! the aspiring manager hence, does not get any time to prepare for tough competitive exams such as CAT success in which is essential for entry into a good B school- at the same time even if a fresh graduate were to devote full time to preparation for CAT, success is not 100 per cent guaranteed! - the ideal situation therefore is to take up a job which permits upgrading professional qualification (such as M.Com.) while allowing flexibility to prepare for CAT and improve qual. Anil.
But it is totally depend on your conditions to complete MBA . I mean to say your economical resources to complete MBA . In case of economical problems you should preffer job first because experience is also getting accounted and at the saturation point you yourself find at a position to proceed further for MBA . If you have no economical bindings then it is most preffered to go for MBA first .
Hello Ms.Shalini, Its natural to have confusion in this cometetive world. But i would suggest you to go for MBA, because it will enble you to become best management professional n then u ll get enough confedence to enjoy the job which ll be ahead.
I would strongly suggest that you have a yr or 2 work exp and then go ahead with a MBA degree. I makes things much better and after 1-2 yrs of exp u bcome much more maturer for an MBA from a Good B-school. Dont do the mistake which I have done..
I am a working professional. In my view it is better if one gets some work experience before going for any masters. This would help the individual in understanding the industry and what the industry expects from an individual. When an individual resumes higher studies after say 1 year work experience, he will be already knowing what is expected by the industry and can learn things with more practicallity. Instead of simply going through the syllabus.
I personally suggest to earn MBA and then work. Once you are into working, you might feel little difficult to quit job for a degree. as a fresher you a choice to choose your carrier, than being sterotype by work experince.
Hi Shalini, i am BMS student and had some queries on similar lines. ofcourse work experience is an additional plus point in your CV while you apply for B-school. However it is not the ONLY criteria. So a work ex will definitely be helpful but it should be in good firm and somewhat related to management, supervision etc.
What I recommend (and what im also gonna do) is that give the entrance exams like CAT, CET etc a try. so atleast you have the gates open right now. whether to join a b-school or no can be decided later depending on school u get into and type of job offered to you.
thanks (please note that above opinion is personal.)
If you want to do MBA prefer premier business schools like IIM,XLRI,BIM etc...but other colleges dont do..its better to study and then do it by corres if its colleges other than IIM...etc...
