Just working as a computer engineer, 1 cr Rs is almost equivalent to $225,000. To save that kind of money, you would need to work for atleast 10 years. And that's assuming you are never out of a job and save very well, make wise decisions on houses and so on. Anyone 'working' in a job in the US will agree to this - saving is not easy. So, if you plan to return to India with 1 cr rupees, chances are you would end up settling in the US.

Satish,

Most schools need a GRE general test score and a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score for application purposes.
The site: www.ets.org should have more information. If you know a university that is highly ranked in Genetics, you can go to their website and find out more from existing students in their program. If you have publications in your area of interest, finding the correct faculty/professor is easier. The university website will send you an application package if you ask them for it. So, first select about 5 universities that are of interest based on your research interest, location, cost of living etc. At the same time, study for your GRE. Complete the application around December if you want to apply for the next 'Fall' (August-September of the next year).

Hi Rupesh

I myself on H4 visa. I can't answer all of your queries regarding your wife's study plan but I can answer few of your questions. I have currently enrolled for my Master's at a North carolina University. If you are able to prove that you have been residing in a particular state of U.S for more than 12 months and in that state's university, your wife is applying for her further studies, her tuition fees will lessen. For claiming her as a resident of your resident state, you have to show your utility bills, your apartment rent documents or if you have bought your house, then the documents of your house, your passport, visa, work permit, your wife's visa etc. In short all the documents that prove that you are legally residing and residing for more than 12 months. Still you can consult the university, as rules do vary a little state to state.And yes, you can take student loan on your wife's behalf. I hope my explanation serves as an answer to at least one question of your question list.

You can get a student loan in the US, however you do need a local guarantor. Whether or not your H1B status will prevent you being a guarantor, you would have to verify that with financial institutions. Try searching for 'international student loan' on google and follow the pointers. Make sure you use a reputable financial institution and compare terms.

Financial Aid for Study in USA while on H4 Visa
by Rupesh Rajput on Aug 08, 2006 08:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi,
I am working here in USA and on H1b Status. My wife is currently on H4 visa. She is M.Sc. in Agriculture. While her stay in USA I want her to pursue Agribusiness Management. And she is appearing for GRE due of this.
But I have following doubts regarding her study:

1. As she is on H4, will she be able to get Financial Aid either from Indian Financial Institution or in Abroad?
2. If yes what all things I required to show to get her Financial Help?
3. is it good to let her study on H4 or F1 is recommended?
4. Does the fee structure differ on H4 from F1?
5. If I have to show asset to get financial Aid, Can I show my Flat in Mumbai as the asset while it is still on a loan from a Bank?

This information will really be helpful to me in deciding the future for my wife.

Thanks a lot in Advance,
Regards,
Rupesh

by Dhruman on Aug 10, 2006 02:56 AM  Permalink
Answer to ur questions are:
1 no ur wife cannot apply for financial aid while she is on H4.
3 its advisable to change from H4 to F1 as you have to be on F1 to get any form of financial support including oncampus part-time job.
4 yes the fee structure differs as long as she is on H4 and is living in the state where the univ. is for over a year. In that case only instate fee should be applicable. however if status is changed from H4 to F1, then out of state fee is applicable which is generally 3-4 times the instate fees.
5 to the best of my knowledge you wont have to show any financial assets to apply for financial aid.

Hope this is helpful

by Sonia on Aug 10, 2006 11:28 AM  Permalink
Hi Rupesh,

I have been in the same situation myself. I would recommend changing status to F1. On H4 she can study but can not get financial aid. I would also suggest to talk with international student office at the university where she intend to join the program. Besides on-campus work permit, with F1 another advantage is OPT. Fee structure for H4 and F1 may or may not be same depending on your state and university. As far as I know about showing financial statement, I think you can show property as an asset for F1 visa even if it is on loan as long as can get certifiication from Charted accountant.
I hope it helps.

first of all i think u cant study full time on h4
just like this
h1=work
f1=study
h4=dependent
second finan aid doesnot depend on the status of u r visa
first of all to clear that u must have a good track record regarding academics if the professor finds u worth for his jobs then u may get it

for doing ms u must show atleast 20000 dollars cash
dont try to show the house ok

good byeee

RE: J1 Visa
by Noname on Aug 10, 2006 09:38 AM  Permalink

Hi,

You need just enough to pay for the Visa Fees at the USCIS for getting visa. J1 Visa is lot different from F1 student visa. But it is good to be prepared to show evidence and convince them that you do not intend to settle in the US.
