CAll Centres:Cons more than pros
by Nirav Shah on Nov 03, 2005 06:06 PM  Permalink

Well i do not agree with this article, I think most call centres provide you with the best working environments, better leave structure and an environment which if full of budying energy and fun thanx to the enormous amount of youngsters working there. Its an all together a new social life and has a bit of everything you would want from a soap opera. Every office in the world requires you to achieve your targets and do justice to the salary they pay you and so does this industry. Secondly you are not forced upon to take up the job. Its we who CHOOSE it as our career options or for many a quick way to earn money. So why is there a CRIB. When you know how the work structure is, if you dont like it dont apply for a job and if you like it dont CRIB. As we always say Grass is greener on the otherside. Well most routine jobs have the worst struggle starting from travelling from home to office, no fixed work hours all depends on the boss and louzy pay scales. BPO's - FREE traveling home to office, FIXED work hours and Excellent pay scales for the right candidates.

I AM A HAPPY BPO WORKER and i believe i choose the right path for myself. Working in this Industry now for over 4 years

Purpose of this document please...
by Chetan on Nov 03, 2005 05:57 PM  Permalink

To all those people who are against BPO business in India just answer this question. If BPO's are out of India then how do you plan to fill the direct & indirect employment gap? Today atleast the younger crowd have the option of getting into BPO's, and earn theri bread. Where will they go if BPO's vanish?

On the health front, yes to some extent it does effect since the whole cycle changes but you cant certianly compare it to slavery. Today CCTV's are installed in every organization and this is more from a security angle and I personally feel there is nothing wrong in it if you are right.

Do slaves get to work under AC..
Do slaves get excellent transport facilities..
Do slaves get good work environment..
Do slaves get good food to eat..
Do slaves get mineral water to drink..
Do slaves get recognised for their efforts..

I dont understand why there should be a union for BPO's, dont understand where the left front is heading to.

call-centers ARE NOT bad
by Srinath on Nov 03, 2005 05:55 PM  Permalink

After looking at the title of the article and the content, I am starting to believe that there is an ongoing effort to malign the call-centre profession. Though the content of the article has more points supporting the profession than those opposing it, the title carries the view of the only opposing post on it.

As far as the points raised by Sameer,
1. cellphones need to be turned off and you cannot move out of your desk.
How many people do you find in the customer facing service sectors ( like private bank cashier, employees at airlines ticket booking counter, boarding pass issuing counter ), who are free using their cellphones and rest-rooms at their wish. As rightly pointed out by Umesh, it's just the nature of the job.

2. Pay is in-sufficient.
In any industry, the pay is going to be dictated by demand vs supply equations. If the demand in software job is huge and you think you fit in there more than the call-center job, it's a personal decision to quit call-center and take up a software profession, it's a personal choice. Does not mean that call-centers pay less.

call centres
by Surendran Vasudevan on Nov 02, 2005 05:29 PM  Permalink

In a country with 36% population below poverty line, call centers or any other centres which generate earning sources are welcome. However, people with accademic and other talents and with adequate economical back up must pursue for that only instead of remaining in suffocating conditions. Jet speed moving Qualis carrying youngsters (in their twenties)in sleeping, dozing and yorning conditions do not look nice. The youngsters should always be in their cheerful moods.

why?
by nagaraj on Nov 02, 2005 02:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

why is the article named " Cons more than Pros" ?

When in fact the content suggests otherwise.

Those who do not like this industy may wish not to join.

So it becomes , i believe essential to stop nipping at the bud, and let this sun rise industry help it to grow itself.

Reports like the one shown does not solve any purpose except spreading unrest. Let also loosing business can the report provide a solution if they have one.

RE:why?
by Harit Shah on Nov 03, 2005 10:01 PM  Permalink
I agree with this, why has the name of the article been given as "Cons more than pros"???! Why does rediff want to mislead readers like this, when so many millions of people log on to rediff every single day?!?!? It, being a public media, should act responsibly and is, instead, trying to tarnish the image of the call centre/BPO industry. I myself have not worked in the industry but it provides employment to over a million people (for your information, the IT and BPO sectors combined at the end of March 2005 provided employment to over 1 million people and as per NASSCOM's target is expected to hit 2 million people by 2008.). Given these statistics, it is vital that the industry be promoted and not put down. Please act in a responsible manner.
