Well, At initial stages of ur career,One can find a job of good packages whether u r from finance or marketing. But once, one start moving up in tha ladder of management, marketing do score over Finance. Evry well said in previous article, that products offered by companies in same segment do not varry much, but still one performs well n other does not. Initial growth, sustainance alll depends upon how u market ur product. Jo dikhta hai vo bikta hai, very well sums up the story.
In this competitive world, products are more or less the same, its the startegies that matter. See icici n HDFC or u may say other banks. ICICI so agressive n hence growing like anything though the prodcuts n services of other banks may be somehow better.
Finance is more of operational part which do not take into account the external enviornment but marketing guys do sense the changes in external env n makes product accordingly. So its marketing that dictaes the product in the final countdown..
If we say an organization is the'body',then finance and marketing are like two hands of the body. But between the two perhaps marketing will determine the success or failure of the organization.Let us say if marketing is the working hand(right or left)the other hand is finance.A company can still survive for some time and even recoup if the marketing is strong, where as if it is only finacially sound but poor in marketing it will ultimately wither away!Marketing is undoubtedlly the 'driver'and in forefront always, where as finance can always onlybein'supporting'role. However one should not forget the fact that marketing alone wiithout finance can not make the organization survive for long and ultimately wither away!
The subject article on your website has been debated well, however both the functions are equally important to organisations stability and growth. These functions are like the two sides of the same coin and if both are handeled effectively the results are productive.
MBA Marketing no doubt is critical but one who chooseit as career & work with good zest & zeal would propably touch the higher position in a very short span purely depends on his caliber & one thing which I would like to say is that an MBA could be more montarely sufficientthan any other stream.
I appreciate the views of other gentlemen on Finance Vs Marketing.
In my view you can never solve this puzzle that "Whether Cock comes first or Egg comes first". Similarly you cannot generalise whether Finance is better or Marketing is better.
Like after coming from hardcore finance background I will always vouch for finance but there is one well proven fact that for any business Marketing is like a 'Visiting Card' I mean which gives the idea about the nature of business and which ultimately results in the foot-fall of customers for the products/services of the company.
On the other hand, apart from all this if the Financials of any project will not be to the mark, product can never take-off from prototype stage to final stage. So in short Finance works as the heart or lifeline for any project.
To summarise my views it is and it will still be a debate.
I think instead of debating whether Mba marketing is better or finance, focus should be given more on the individual aptitude and skills for that particular specialization. incase if he has no interest/skills for a particular stream there is no point debating which one is good/better.
