Teaching?
by Daniel on Jan 14, 2005 09:46 AM  Permalink

Please!
It's the most unrewarding and thankless job since the past two years.

There were rewards and thanks in the 90's for this profession.

Now, it is just some commodity to be bought by the ultra rich.

Steer clear.

Teaching Profession

Disadvantages:
You cannot go out or take leave in Pre-exam days, also during Vacation you are busy corecting papers.

Frustration:
Like any other profession , such as Medical, money seekers have entered in htis profession. Means do not matter to them nad these leads to frustration among honest and sincere people.

Having been a University teacher and researcher for over four decades I can say it is one of the most demanding and highly stressed jobs for any one dedicated to the cause.
Contrary to the general perception, one has to put in 12 to 14 hours per day for 340 to 350 days in a year and work selflessly placing the interests of students, colleagues, institution and the country above one's own. There are no sundays, no holidays and not much time for the family. It is not meant for those who want a "khushi life" or monetory benefits, but one of service for the advancement of humanity and the value system.
However, looking at the affection and respect bestowed by one's students and diverse professional colleagues even many years after retirement, it is a most satisfying, enjoyable and a truly noble one with immense opportunities.
Only those who are willing to face the evolving demands of the educational system and shared values and above all ethics should go for it.

The joys and sorrows of teaching
by Rashmi on Jan 13, 2005 10:51 PM  Permalink

I'm a teacher. I teach English to children in the age group of 7 and 10 years. Though I would like to say that you get the satisfaction of being instrumental in shaping the lives of many kids.
The teaching profession has lost all the respect it once commanded. The teachers are absolutely powerless when it comes to disciplining children. This is because of the wrong values that have been imbibed into them by parents. The teachers have lost their dignity they once had.
For the effort that they put in the are very poorly paid. It is really sad for teachers in Central Schools where teachers don't get the weekend off which they so badly deserve.
I strongly discourge all those who have intentions of joining the teaching profession .....if they are really keen then it would be better if they worked OUTSIDE India where a teacher is respected and valued for what they do.

Teaching- A vocation and definitely not vacation
by Anonymous on Jan 13, 2005 07:50 PM  Permalink

Well written. In fact it's nice to know that AUTHENTIC info is given out with regard to the pay scales. The writer has done a good amount of research...keep it up!.The writer could have mentioned a little about the various boards also viz state board, ICSE, CBSE and IB. Being a teacher myself I can vouch for the fact that this profession is incredibly satisfying despite the pittance one gets. Thank U very much for not painting a rosy picture but citing the facts.I'm sure this article will be very useful to all those who are interested in persuing this profession.

While Teaching subjects ,like physics at PG level, ( say quantum mechanics - where you are at a higher and different level of thinking),you concentrate on the topic so much that you get trained in concentrating your mind on a particular point of focus and it is like performing yoga/ meditation.
