Hi Lindsay,

Just a minor note to you. You've got it all wrong and you are passing off phrases from the Da Vinci code without knowing their content!

'Jacques Saunière staggered ... ' because if you remember what you read after that, he was shot. And if you expect a shot man to walk uptight like a military general and not stagger, there's something wrong with you.

Also the description of the killer is NOT given by Saunière, but is given by the author! Do you care to read and understand stuff before shooting off articles like that ? Frankly, YOUR opening lines of the article were so dunderhead that they put me off!

YAWN!

Ciao,

Hmmm. same to you. Well, sadly, I see that there are a lot of idiots around who pretend to read literature, claiming they understand it, wanting others to do the same while not understanding a simple humorous article. Long live India.

Da Vinci Code
by TG on Feb 22, 2005 06:59 PM  Permalink

The article hit the nail on the head. It's so obviously pretentious of celebrities to spout literary titles to make themselves look intellectual ( Beauty with Brains or Hunk with Humanity, if you like). It's just like the south Indian cine actresses of yesteryears, who always claimed that they studied at Churchpark Convent in Chennai. With the exception of the current CM Jayalalitha, no one else's claim to be an alumnus of that institution has been proved.
I too am reading The Da Vinci Code at present and just coincidentally, I was also thinking of The Name of the Rose, which I had read years before and thinking of how this fares in comparison. That was a masterpiece which blended suspense, mystery, literary history and showed the protagonist in different lights as you progressed through the novel, as the incidents were not merely linked to the mystery alone.
Anyhow, I don't think this is going to cure our celebrities of their claims to be heads above the hoi polloi, when their main aim in life is to cater to the fantasies of the people and to make money out of it!

What a marvel da vinci code is..
by veni on Feb 22, 2005 06:59 PM  Permalink

writing novel does not come as easy as writing a critic about the novel..in this era of stripping, item bomb numbers which wins best stroy awards in star studded function.. a marvoulus writing has come on our way.. see the way authour puts his thougts and writing on the discriptions of each and every monument the characters come across, a person from india without even visitng those places could crearly get details and i adivse the readers to go for the classic version of the book, which contains illustarted photos along with the story so that you can appriciate the work even more better.
Suspense, thriller, gripping speed, plot, the codes, the unknown truth about the famous"last supper painting"and the way the codes are dcoded..it needs a lot of stuff to think and hats off to such a master story teller.
Immense courage and guts is needed to write a controversial subject, the faith of christianity, opus odei, the vatican, the family of christ...all said in public but without an inch of defaming the lord himself. its like walking on a rope with the dagger right below. All the pain and hard work of Dan brown is paid off as this is the bestseller here too.
Dont miss it.

Hmmmm....
by Manu Anand on Feb 22, 2005 06:15 PM  Permalink

I know where u are coming from. I found the book thrilling and read it in 6 hrs straight and those 6 hrs were in front of computer. I had a soft copy actually.

It is most definitely not a yawn. This guy has woven facts and fiction so closely that you find it impossible to distinguish them.

But all said and done, I won't be marooned on an island with this book. It has no retaining value. Kinda like use-and-throw. And I won't be surprised if they make a movie out of it. Hell!! I may actually go and watch it :D.

What a ridiculous peice of reasoning!
by jignashu on Feb 22, 2005 05:29 PM  Permalink

Celebrities talking about Da Vinci Code irked her because it has become a cliche is understandable. But to go ahead and say that it is a bad novel is ridiculous! why Saunière staggers, why does he lunge to the nearest painting, is something a reader needs to find from the novel. The novel doesn't start with this, it is a prelogue which is supposed to arouse reader's curiosity. Worst part is to say that the details about the attacker are coming from the lunging man, c'mon, are you a first time novel reader? It is the author of the novel who is giving a visual and not the curator! I think Rediff should get some more sincere and responsible columnist who have better things to write about and have better logical reasoning.
